I got a original low mile rebuilt  F-100 272 not a 239 according to the #'s on the Y-block, so must of been changed over the years. Want to know what to do to it to make it better and dress it up-- or just sell it and go a 351 W engine--Thanks

The '54 engines are different enough from the later ones that not much interchanges, so the readily available speed parts and typical upgrades either won't work at all or are  more difficult to make work.  That said, it will respond to the same tricks you would apply to any other engine, porting, compression increase, bigger cam (probably reground on your existing cam) etc.  The problem is that you will have a lot of money in it for little gain.

Dress up items will interchange.

Your best option would be to sell it to someone who is restoring a '54 and needs it to be original as possible, and  swap in a 292.

The 292 is a drop in. If you use your old, not recommended, exhaust manifolds that bolts up too. There were few changes in the outer block over the years. The early heads did have freeze plugs in the front of the heads. That said I agree with Charlie. You can put dress up on your current engine and, if its running ok, search for a 292. Be careful when offered a 312. There is very little external clues to which engine you have. Go to John Mummert's  http://www.ford-y-block.com and check the technical pages he has a ton of information that will help you out.

Are you saying it is a 272? Probably an ECG number?

If that's the case, there's quite a lot of different things you can do...Cam, dual exhaust manifolds, 4 barrel, grab a set of G or 113 heads for it...or as others have said, drop a 292 in it.

I did not pick up on the 272 part.  If it is a 272, then yes, a lot can be done pretty easily.

Here is a picture of my "272" dressed up.  I blocked off the front & back carbs , I have been to a few big car shows & display it with the hood a quarter of the way up & it really draws interest & none of the gearheads have ever noticed that the linkage only operates the center 2 barrel.........

Double check the cylinder head casting numbers.  The cylinder heads will dictate what you can do in regards to using other intake manifolds.  Beyond that, all Y-Block valve covers are interchangeable.

If it's a 272 and it's a '54 it is not original to the truck.
