I put a C4 behind the 312 in ,my 56 Bird. Used a Flat-O-Matic kit. Went very well. Used the stock 56 kickdown, but had to modify it a little (extended it).
Very happy with the result. I was not interested in a O/D even though I drive it long distances but if you want an O/D then the AOD is probably the best way to go.

50mercfan. Welcome to the site.
Click the link below that will connect you to an article that is on the 'Tech Articles' section of this web site. I've had no experience making the swap of a C-4 for a Fordomatic, but this article seems like it provides quite a bit of information.

Hope this helps!

Link from here to John Mummert's site. I believe he has an adaptor to C-4s. Also has an adaptor to T-5 std transmissions.

I did the swap to an aod got adapter at brandinson in Minnesota. don't know if it spelled right.it is a bolt in deal. have to make your own shifter and get a locar cable. I drove it 2000 miles last year on a 378 rear but I going to put in a 355 this year. you will like it

This is the company Hotdoger1 was talking about. I used them and was quite happy. Been running for many years. Lokar also sells a column shift adapter that worked for me. http://www.transmissionadapters.com/ford_y_block.htm
