A friend has a 1950 Ford and is looking for (any) rear end that is no wider than (outside to outside) 55 5/8". Can anyone help him? Thank you

I see on eBay, (seller, pemracing (1401), they have them 54"-56" wide. Complete with axels, bearings, seals, etc., for about $600-$800 bucks. Beyond that....someone else most likely has a better source..

Early Mustang, 57 Ford, or you can also use early Bronco but they are 5 on 5.5" so you will need wheels to fit adapters or aftermarket axles. The axles are around $300 a pair. Sometimes its just easier to buy a complete sized to fit rear from places like Speedway.

I don't have the exact measurements but '57-'59 Ford should fit. I know they fit in a '55-56 Ford. '59 and '53 wheels interchange because I did it in High School. I think '50 had the same bolt pattern but not certain.

The narrowest rear you will find in a Ford is the Maverick and that is 56.5 drum to drum.
The 1965 mustang is the same as a 1957 ford at 57.25 drum to drum!
To get narrower than that you would have to have a housing and axels narrowed!

One possibility would be use the wider diff with a set of the negative offset Wheels like the modern Cars use!

It takes some work, but Volvo guys are using 8.8 Ford diffs by shortening the tube on the long axle side to match the short side and using a short axle in both sides. I don't know what the final width is, but a Volvo 244 has a rear track of about 53 inches. The axle tubes are just pressed into the center section then pinned. I probably didn't explain it all that well, but a quick search of Ford 8.8 in Volvo brings up plenty of discussion. Not as strong as a 9 inch, but close and cheap. I bought one for my F100 at Pick and Pull for about $150 out of an Exploder with 3.73s, posi, and disc brakes.
