Just changed pans on my 292 and was surprized to find that the oil drain plug doesn't fit. Its much smaller than the ones I'm used to. More like a 3/8" hole. Any chance of finding on through a parts store? When did they go to the smaller drain plug? Also, I have a gearoter pump I was going to put on but instead of the hex shaft drive is has a tab to fit in a slotted shaft. What is that?

later truck pans use a 1/2"-20 drain plug.  That is a very common size.

The tang drive pump is 1954 only.  There are rebuild kits available from Melling.  If the drive style is the only difference, then that will get you a hex drive and new rotors and relief valve spring.

The pump is a NOS gear rotor aluminum pump. I guess I'll put it out there for the 54 owners. So its 256 or 272? Thanks, Charlie

As far as the drain plug, check ebay under Ford oil drain plug.  Lots of options for 1/2 -20 size.

Charlie; The pump you have is for a 239 or 256, not a 272, which takes the common later design.

you can buy a replacement drain plug at NAPA, or O'Rielly's  I bought one recently from O' Rielly's, it was about  $2.50
