Hi All!
I am going to install a billet aluminum oil filter adapter on a newly rebuilt 312 and wanted to know how much torque is required and whether the gasket should be installed dry, oiled or with sealer.
Thanks

The billet adapters I am familiar with just use an o-ring to seal against the block...no gaskets. Just oil the o-ring and torque the fastener.

Thanks.
I am assuming it is safe to torque the steel fitting against the aluminum?

Did you buy that recently? I tried to get one, talked to the guy who was making them. He always had excuses why he didn't have any. Got tired of chasing him.

There are new ones on eBay, http://www.ebay.com/itm/SPIN-ON-OIL-FILTER-ADAPTER-KIT-FOR-Y-BLOCK-FORDS-BILLET-232-252-272-292-312-352-/252447012742?hash=item3ac703b786:g:UnsAAOSw9eVXUG85&vxp=mtr There is also a polished one available.
I don't think these are produced by the same person and they are cheaper which may or may not be a good thing.

The use of oil or sealer can result in leaks, since torquing down the adapter often squeezes the gasket out of place. A tiny bit of spray trim adhesive to hold the gasket in place on the block while you assemble everything always works for me.

P.S. Prestige T-Birds used to sell an extra thick gasket that I always use.

Disk brake quiet is a very good sticky spray to hold gaskets in place during tightening. I spray it on both side of the gasket and let it set a minute. Works for me.

I don't know how it compares to the other one.

Thanks everybody for the replies. I can not find a torque value for the oil filter fitting. Is it critical? For installation I just tightened it good with a large ratchet.

The shop manual spec is 25ft/lbs., but Walt Nuckels' original article about modifying the steel adapter suggested 60 ft/lbs. Don't know how that might translate to aluminum (?).
