What is involved in removing the front pulley(s) & damper on a 292 Y Block? I can't seem to remove the front bolt & wonder what the process is? Thanks Jim

Remove the center bolt. If any accessory pulley is installed, remove that. Use a damper puller to pull the damper. To install, you need a damper installer. In case you are wondering, a hammer is not an installer.
To remove the bolt If equipped with a manual transmission, put it in gear, put on the brake, chock the wheels and use a breaker bar or long handled 1/2" drive ratchet. If auto transmission, use the breaker bar and get in a position where you can pull on it hard and release repeatedly. That usually works it off. Don't use an impact wrench. If on an engine stand, use a big screw driver to wedge into the teeth of the flywheel and lock it in place or thread in 2 flywheel bolts and use a long wrench to hold the crank from turning or get a proper flywheel turning tool to hold the flywheel in place.

I stole this off the HAMB. I'm not this clever

Charlie - why do you advise against using an impact wrench. On hard to release bolts, I have used an impact wrench with much success

Cast cranks can break easily with an impact wrench.

Thanks Guys for the suggestions. I'll have to try Charlie's method as engine is in the car and is an auto trans Hope it works, as I've got to get it off Jim

OK I got the bolt out using Charlie's method. Now, how does the damper get removed? Thanks Jim

You need to get a Puller. Same Type used on Steering Wheels. Bolts on with the existing threaded Holes in the Damper.

If it's a pulley on a Tbird the steering wheel type puller will not work

You will need a tool to re-install the Damper too. Does your local Auto Parts Store have a Loan-a-Tool program? DO NOT use a Hammer to re-install.

Thanks Jim

There is a similar Tool to reinstall by threading into the threads where You removed the retaining Bolt from.Make sure it is threaded in enough that You don't pull the Threads out of the Crankshaft before You start to pull the Damper on.

Lisle 53460 should work well. It comes with a spacer which should work well with the relatively deep damper that a y block has.

The main thing with the installer is that it has a 9/16-18 adapter. Many do not.

Another way to do it: Get a longer bolt and draw it in enough so that you can use the regular bolt to finish it. Just don't bottom out the longer bolt in the crank.
