Does anybody have a recommended sealant to use on water pump housing and timing chain cover. I have not done any sealing for years and wonder what is working good. I don't want any leaks in my 239 ohv when I get her out in spring. Both water pump and timing covers have paper gaskets included. Thanks Guys... Whipper Bill

Believe it not but Dennis Leaking will know what I am talking about, I use Pro dope pipe thread sealing compound, never dries stays tacky and excellent on the threaded bolts also as a sealer, they never corrode or stick. That or I just coat the gaskets with white lithium grease. Just use thin coats of either on each side of gaskets or surfaces and if you need to take apart, comes apart with ease. There are other things I use occaisionally like Super weatherstrip and gasket adhesive or brush on a little bit of liquid tape, probably same stuff. Halomar is also a super product. I am just not a fan of silicone gobs everywhere and if it comes loose can plug up oil passages etc.

ok thanks yb billy for the info. I have a can of permatex aviation gasket maker. brush on. That probably will work ok also but would like more ideas here if any

I like Permatex #2 in a tube. A thin coat on each piece. Yes it is messy, after many years it maybe a little hard to get apart, but I never had any leaks with it since 1960 when my dad started me using it. I garentee it is still used in every power plant in the country. Good luck.

I use Permatex #2 also. I'm old school and probably the last person on the planet that doesn't use silicone or own a cell phone LOL.

Pematex is a great all-rounder. Over here the non hardening one is no3 , but Im sure in the U.S its no2 ? sticky shit .. Also I think you have one called Indian head? Probably similar I used it when I was over there working on a friends Mustang.

OK, thanks fellas, So if I use permatex #2, I coat each housing surface with light coat of sealant. Do I use paper gaskets supplied also? I want to be clear so I don't screw it up.

I use CopperCoat on both the timing cover and water pump gaskets.

Yes, use the gasket. Permatex is a gasket sealant and NOT a replacement for the gasket.

Yes, use the gaskets. Permatex #2 isn't thick enough to serve as a gasket on its own.

I use CopperCoat on both the timing cover and water pump gaskets. Thats interesting, I have never tried it on other gaskets, just use it on head gaskets, I must try it.

Me too. As Ranchero, I never thought of copper coat on anything other than the water passage holes on a head gasket.. Always learning. Thanks

Like Ted, I too have used Coppercoat for more than 60 years on the gaskets; for the wet bolts either pipe dope or #2 permatex have worked well, as does silicone,all if properly applied.
