Think that's aftermarket Stu. You see a lot of those around here.

By MoonShadow - 9 Years Ago
They were often a dealer option. Used to see them with the dealer's name stamped into them. Chuck

Neat! And it came with it's own dog.

What carb is on the engine now?
By MoonShadow - 7 Years Ago
Will it have a ramp on it or roll back?
By Canadian Hot Rodder - 9 Years Ago
Bigwindow, you must be Canadian or at least from the US north east!!! lol
By PF Arcand - 9 Years Ago
Lucky to save the block!  Looks like someone did a gunnysack rebuild & it maybe seized?.. Mismatched or wrong year heads is unfortunately fairly common. I'm sure that Tim Mc Master will sort it out for you..
By PF Arcand - 9 Years Ago
A minor note on the valve specs..if the  ECZ -C exhaust valves are 1.54" dia, they're not stock, as originals are 1.51 diameter. If they are the bigger ones, what's the source for them & are they unmodified ?
By stuey - 9 Years Ago
Great project love the pics.
re the  rear checker plate bumper,  are they home brew or was somebody selling them. I have an identical one on my 56?

What a cool (not to mention ambitious) project and combination. Thanks for sharing it.

Nice to see you back, I was wondering where the projects were. I’ve got a TKO500 behind a truck bell housing in my 32. Send me a PM, I’ll tell you the story.

Really nice straight truck Lancer....hard to find them like that anymore. Should make an awesome hauler!!

what kind of trans was in your truck
By FORD DEARBORN - 6 Years Ago
Nice work on the Unibody. In response to a 5 speed install, I'll try to post a few pics of what I did in another send. It's a modified T5 from a 1990 Mustang GT.  My goal was NOT to modify the bell housing by boring/welding in place, threaded bushings. My truck's bell had the close/narrow trans bolt pattern so therefore, there was an off-the-shelf adapter available from Modern Drive Line and other vendors. Compensating for the additional inch of the adapter, I used an input shaft and retainer from a 95 Mustang T5. (The 95 Mustang has a deeper bell to move the shifter further rearward.) Since the Mustang T5 puts the shifter to where it's almost touching the seat, Modern Drive Line also produces a very nice quality tail housing for the Ford T5 with the shifter positioned about 3"? forward. The flywheel is from Mummert so it was drilled for the Ford clutch and also the Mustang clutch. John also produces a bearing hub for the occasion. I'm trying to remember all this as best I can recall. I did have to search for the thowout bearing, however.  If you wish, send me a PM.  Hope this helps, JEFF...........................   I tried to post all the pics in one envelope but for some reason I couldn't.

Very nice! You guys and your rust free sheet metal. My uni had more rust than clean sheet metal I think.
By 62bigwindow - 9 Years Ago
Worse. Right in the middle of the rust belt. Northeast Missouri.

Any chance you're thinking about using a couple of these in the doors? I had one on the driver's side door of the 63 F-100 I once owned and I thought it was kind of neat.

By 56_Fairlane - 9 Years Ago
I'm not sure if they are repopped but it seems they do show up on fleabay and other various places.

I have the Canned Monster thread going over in the race section so I thought I'd toss this one up here. I had been looking for a Slick for a while. A long bed 3/4 ton version to pull the gasser around with. Finally found one locally. Super straight and clean with no rust issues to speak of less some surface rust on the floor board. No holes or major body damage of any kind so a super solid starting place. Other than a missing coil the truck was 100% complete. Not running and had been sitting for over a decade. Original V8 truck with four speed, Dana 60.
Paint plans are to match the race car. A color called Persion Red for the main body and a Silver Pearl White for the top. Inside the bed is very clean and even has a straight tail gate. Really amazing how straight it is considering it was a ranch truck.
Back to the engine. While trying to turn it over by had to make sure it all was okay, the engine would get stuck and make a clunk sound. After various tests to see what it could be I finally pulled the pan to find parts of at least one rod and some piston parts. Then I knew it was going to come out. After kicking around a few options I ended up deciding to rebuild the 292 which after pulling apart found was .060 over so in reality a 301. Cylinders were clean with no ride so all looked good.

Out with the old. Also after pulling it apart I discovered the heads were mis matched. One had smaller valves than the other.

Some more work on the heads done yesterday. Tim McMaster the Y-Block guy is doing the work on everything.
This original ecz-c head with 1.78 intakes and 1.54 exhaust.

Grill is now out of the Monster Hauler. Bumpers are next then a little welding up of some holes then let the sanding begin.

Well, I am pretty far behind on photo so here is a major update.
http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/e8f5c8ef-2e6b-4f13-b828-f8d7.jpg
New wheels and tires are on and ready to go.
http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/1d5514a1-b99f-4959-9a1f-416c.jpg
New chrome handles are in place and working nicely.
http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/d31bf6ad-21f3-4efd-bbc7-4d84.jpg
Inner fenders are painted black and front clip is ready to go on.
http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/795d00d9-8d79-4263-80e8-c986.jpg
Sheet metal is on and aligned, as good as it could be. There are some issues I've still not figured out. Drivers side has an odd gap that doesn't seem to be adjustable. Oh well, its a work truck right.
http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/671b1403-ca31-4b6c-b1b2-8d31.jpg
Gauge panel is painted and new gauges are installed.
http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/cd27fe89-e821-4fde-a080-4e25.jpg
New upholstered seat is done and ready for install. I'm very happy with this seat, best $300. I've spent on the truck I think.
http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/d4ef7f70-6862-406a-945e-7338.jpg
Door glass and new felts etc. are in place, new wing window rubber as well. These doors were a challenge. Wow, but they came out nice.
http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/092e465c-5276-4769-b457-4712.jpg
Back glass is in with new rubber. Had to put this one in twice as I installed the rubber backwards the first time.
http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/5707e76a-48a3-43b1-9b20-4863.jpg
Inside shot of the door glass. The door glass and the back glass are all original to the truck and have the cool little Ford stamp on them. I used vinegar to clean them along with steel wool. Took all the nasty hard water spots off.

As it sits today. Mechanically is all done, I'll finish the paint this summer when it warms up. Looking at a 5 speed swap, if anyone out there has some advice on that I'd love to hear it. Also want to upgrade to discs up front and add AC eventually.
Thats it for now, I am working on the race car now. Check out that build thread on the Canned Monster.

Wow, what a clean install. I have both the small bolt pattern and a larger bolt pattern bell housing. I have a smaller one I had planned on putting a toploader behind for the 56 Gasser I'm building. The larger is on the truck currently. I've read the smaller pattern works with the top loader but that version of the four speed is a weaker version of the trans, so I've been going back and forth what to do there. I'm on a tight deadline to get the gasser to Eagle Field in Oct to run it. But, I need to sort out the truck too with more gears. I think it has 4:56 or 4:88s in it now. Crazy low gears and the original granny four speed are killing me.
Would love to talk more about options. Thanks for the info, look forward to figuring this out. Lance

So the Monster Hauler is ready to fire, but won't fire? Checked coil, wires etc. Thinking it may be the points, need to grab a new set and swap them out. Really odd, ran perfect for the break in three months ago, just been sitting since then while I worked on other things. Guessing it could have gotten hot, maybe grounded out or something during the break in and then after it cooled, broke? Should know soon.
By Lancer - 9 Years Ago
Update on the Monster Hauler. I finally got to hear the motor through the new exhaust. It was short lived, seems my Craigslist carb is having some issues. This is after I replaced the points by the way which were toast. Fix one issue, find another. Not sure whats up with the carb. Swapping it out on Sunday with a rebuilt Holley and hoping that remedies the situation. I can then set the timing and get it dialed in and REALLY hear it well. And get some video. Two steps forward, one step back. Pretty normal for my car projects.
By Lancer - 8 Years Ago
@moonshadow, it now has a nice running Holley on it. See the attached video to hear it run. Also getting back on the body work as we are having some great weather.

The choke horn is flapping about as I don't have it hooked up to a cable yet, but you get the idea.

paint on the doors is all done finally. Now I can get them put back together. Feels good to have at least one thing done. Paint came out nice and I love the color combo. Wimbledon White and Performance Red.

By Lancer - 7 Years Ago
Its been a while since I posted. Progress is being made. Doors are on and the windshield is now in place. Cab is coming back together. Need to get my gauges sorted out along with all the switches. I am in need of the inner panels for the doors if anyone has a pair they can let loose of. Also looking for a wiper switch with knobs etc. Mine was gone when I got the truck. Hoping to get a little more parts sprayed this weekend. Seat is headed to the upholsterer on Friday. I got the frame painted up and ready for him to lay it all out. I need to polish the glass for the doors and back window. The front glass is new and looks nice.

While not exactly in order, here are some updates on the build. Engine is in and broke in, runs great. Driveline is in, exhaust is done and installed. Gas tank is out and in the process of cleaning it up. Its solid just dirty from 12 plus years of sitting. Transmission is in with new throwout bearing. Not in order I know, that was in before the driveline. And wheels are painted, still need to get tires. I need to finish up the rear brakes still. Dreading that.

I'm not in a huge hurry and I enjoy the work. Its like therapy, better really but cost about the same, ha ha. It will be a nice driver, not a show truck but should get the job done.

Just need to add some water and do a final leak check. Fuel tank is just about ready to go back in place with new sending unit installed. Hope to get that done tomorrow. Then I can fire it and hear it through the exhaust for the first time. Set timing, adjust the carb and we'll be in business. Was able to get the throttle rod on and adjusted to it will open it up all the way.

I found a set of mirrors which I'm happy about. They are coming from Georgia. I was able to get the bench seat all stripped down to the bones. Some paint work on it then its off to the upholsterer. I finally found a set of 8 lug 16" wheels. Boy, those are tough to find in the narrower factory style design. Perfect for the truck. The radiator and tie rod ends came in today. The radiator is a direct fit aluminum setup. Found on eBay. Good price but the bottom outlet is on the wrong side. Sent the seller a note so hope to get that worked out. Looks like a nice piece though. The wheels will get painted either red or black and I'm looking at running moon discs on them. Seems appropriate for the period of the build.

Sprayed some paint today on the interior drivers door. Base/clear. One more thing done, long way to go still.

Down to metal, solid and straight. Starting working on the engine bay as well. Still the original paint so not as much work to prep. Just clean, sand and paint. Organize the wires as bit as well. Overall not a bad start thought, I've seen so much worse over the years. Plus there is plenty of room to get in and move around.

Got some work done this weekend on the Monster Hauler. Sheet metal is off and started the cleaning process to get it ready for paint. Greatly dislike scraping 50 plus years of grease and grime but its one of those necessary evils. And, once its done and painted will be worth the effort. Just sucks now. 16 hours working on it in the last two days. Getting there.

Just been doing a ton of cleaning on the suspension, steering box area. What a mess wow. Three days straight now, but I tell you, oven cleaner and some pressure washing works wonders. Most of the gunk is gone, now for some fine cleaning then some metal prep then some paint. getting close.

The "B" intake arrived today from New Jersey for the Monster Hauler. Tim cleaned and painted it up, getting it ready for the final assembly. Richard Stuck I can't thank enough for the hookup on this bad boy. Thank you for your generosity.

@PF Arcand I'll have to defer that question to Tim McMaster, he's doing the head work.  Here is the bare block ready for assembly. http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/82eb18c1-5847-4cde-bdc7-509b.png

Good progress this weekend. Some welding of holes and striping off paint down to the factory white color. Only repainted once and not a great job so the paint is coming off pretty easy. Pulled the rear bumper. Prepped the metal and put one decent coat of primer on it for now. More coats later to block out. This thing must have had a few mirrors on it over the years. Can't believe how many holes were on the door. The tops of bed are the same. Good work truck I guess. Welding up the stake bed holes as well for a little more of a custom look. I'll install some hoops inside the bed for hooking onto.

I'm just glad the bumper wasn't attached to the body like so many of them are. The bumpers are always bent and if attached to the main body will jack up the bed sides too. This ones has nice straight sides, so far ha ha. Only one tiny spot of filler. Since it was repainted, I could tell they had welded up a bunch of holes in the past before the repaint.

Drivers door is all striped down now, ready to prep for paint. Still welding holes up as well. Passenger side next then front and rear windows. Windshield needs replaced anyway and it will make for a much better paint job with all those things out of the way. I'm super picky when it comes to painting, a little extra time spent on removing things makes the final result much, much better.

Bumpers are pulled, all the glass is pulled. Drivers door striped and primed. Pass door gutted. Have more welding to do and much more prep to get ready for paint, but making good progress. The weather has been amazing. Still amazing how straight this truck is and happy it was only painted once. Taking down to bare metal is pretty easy.

Mr Tim McMaster was also busy this weekend working on the Monster Hauler engine.

Cam specs are, .475" lift 288* adv duration. The advertised duration equate to 236* net at .050". It will have a very nasty sound to it.

.010 \ .010 crank to replace the one that came out, which was 100% shot.
