I'm looking to put an overdrive tranmission behind the 312 in my 57 Tbird. The only two companys that I can find that make the adapters are Wilcap and Berndsten (not sure of that spelling). Has anyone had any experience with either of the two adapters or does anyone know of any other companys that do the same sort of thing. Thanks

Ted,

I eMailed Randy a couple of weeks ago, he hasn't finished his adapter yet.

Back to your initial post.  Are you looking to put an automatic overdrive or standard shift with overdrive in your Bird?  Makes a lot of difference in the adaptor required.

Thanks for the update on Randy.  Did he happen to mention how far off he is from being in a position to actually ship some units?

Good point John.  As is already known, there are enough nuances between the auto and standard transmission setups for the SBF that there is not a clean interchangability between the two with the same adapter.  The Bendtsens adapter comes to mind as it works with the AOD but not very well with the standard trans conversion.

Ted,

I asked, but got no answer. I don't think he's actually working on it.

Sorry bout the delay...your right I been researchin...My plan is to put a 200 4r or a 700 r4 behind the 312...I know I know they aren't Ford but I have them and I really like the gear ratios they provide...Right now I am lookin at going with the Wilcap because its 300 bucks cheaper and all I have to provide is the starter which I'm thinkin I can do for the difference in cost. If I'm not mistaken they are the same starter Chrysler has been usin for years and there are a ton of them out there. I'v got to get the two pieces dummied up if I can and see what has to be fabricated for the rear mount. If I have to start cuttin the x bracing then I will go another way. This Michigan winter has been slowing down my garage time in the evenings. Has anyone had any bad things happen with Wilcap?

Uncleaud,   I installed a Bendtsens  700R  trans. adaptor  to the  292 in my victoria..... no problems ,  . very well made ,   more than i wanted to pay ,  but........... .   Have you given any thought to what gear racio  for the rear end ....My car has a 322   and i think   i need a 350  or 360 , in that range ...Any thoughts on that  .......? ..............Sam
By uncleaud - 16 Years Ago
Does your motor lug down too much in high gear? The low gear ratio you have now should be about 9.8 and that seems like it should have plenty of grunt.
By sundance241 - 16 Years Ago
Uncleaud,    It runs pretty good up through the gears ,  except i cant feel it go into overdrive  !! I have a chev. pickup  with the same trans ,   gear ratio is 379  ,  makes me wonder if i need to get it up to 90 befor it will kick into OD ...........cant feel any free wheeling ,  also about 3000 rpm at 70 mph !!!     ..........Sam

Sundance, is this the 200r4 that won't shift up? With any kind of a reasonable tire size you should be down around 2200 @ 70 with that 3.79 gear.

Sounds to me like you have an adjustment problem (my dad used to tell me that when i was a teenager) but seriously. I'm not a transmission guru and know just enough to be dangerous but it sounds like the cable to the carb is not set right. I believe that the cable controls the 1st and possible the 2nd shift point and increases line pressure that allow the governor to make the last two correctly. I know from experience that if the cable is not set before the car is driven you will burn things up within a few miles. Took me three transmissions but I did learn. If you aren't falling into overdrive around 60 65 normal throttle something is amiss and I hope its not to late to save with the cable. Before you throw it out change the governor and springs, they do sometimes stick and fool you into thinking that things are wrong. Good luck

Howdy guys,

This thread is a little aged but I am doing the same thing. I'm planning to use the Bendtsen adapter with my 292 and E4OD.

Bendtsen has assured me that it fits with no problem..... my only concern is the bell housing engine mounts. I'll either add them or talk him into developing an adapter for trucks. It appears that the adapter plate is thick enough to just leave enough metal sticking below out on each side to fab mounts in that area.

I'm having the trans rebuilt right now and am planning to use a Baumann TCS controller.

Has anyone else here ever tried an E4OD (or an AODE for that matter) behind a 292?

Thanks, Rick

Frank,  I am running a 700R  behind the 292.....At 70  MPH i am at 2200 rpm, but with a 3.22 rear end ......thats what i dint understand,,,,It seems to be shifting fine....Maybe someone put the wrong tag on the rear .....thinking about useing a 3.78 rear  and see what happens .............Sam

Measure the tire, tell me either the diameter or the circumference. AND, are you sure of the accuracy of the speedometer.

I figure, with a 24" tire and a 70% od ratio, that you should turn 2230 @ 60 or 2600 @ 70 mph. In THIRD or direct drive, and not accounting for converter slippage that would be arund 3700 At 70 or 3180 at 60. 24" is about as short a tire as I can imagine you'd use. My 205x75x15's are about 26.5" tall.

HTX,

This could be totally off the wall, I have not been under an F100 in a hundred years or so, but have you looked at the possibility of using side mounts on the engine and the passenger car mount at the rear of the transmission? You'd have to Fab a crossmember and the engine mounts.

By HT32BSX115 - 16 Years Ago
Hi Frank,

I thought of that. I could probably add the side mounts and there's plenty of room there and I also have the rear cross mount for the E4OD that cam out of the donor F-450........ but with the Rams horn manifolds I thought the exhaust downpipes might be dangerously close to the mounts. I wouldn't want to cook the rubber! Regular manifolds have the left one running directly into the steering box of course...

Side mounts might simplify things and when I get closer I think it will be clearer whether they will work or not. I am excited about using the E4OD. I also was able to obtain the parking brake assy for it too.

I'll have the worlds only 55 F-600 with an automatic and a 2 speed axle!BigGrin

Sorry to hijack the thread.....It appeared that things had slowed a little!

Cheers,

Frank ,  I am useing the same size tires as you .   At 70 mph  am turning 2200 rpm...this is with the 3.22 rear .....What gear ratio  are you  running ?.................Sam

Sundance,

Based on my Ranger with 3.89's and 29" tall tires, I'm at 23/2400. The truck has a fairly "loose" converter, so the RPM will vary with the amount of throttle. It's a non lock up converter.

The car, has the 26.5 inch tires, but the OD is on the shelf for now, It has a straight three speed. On the street I've installed a 3.25, at the drags I use a 4.56 that I commandered from Hoosier Hurricane. w00t

I`m currently converting to 4R70W behind 292.Bendtsens adapter,

Trans from mod motor ,so have made 2 new holes for trans,

Just got TCI tcu, problem with harness, not included in kit and only in stock for gm

(Probably making it fit myself)

I was planning to use the Baumann Engr TCS

http://www.baumannengineering.com/tcs.htm

My tire size is a little more than you guys are using......my rears are 39" diameter. I calculated 504 rear wheel PRM at 60mph. with the 5.83:1 axle and 0.71 E4OD (in OD) I'll get about 2100rpm at 60mph.

Of course when I want low gears......a flip of the switch will shift the 2 speed to 8.11:1 !!!

Just an update for anyone interested. I went with the Wilcap adapter for no other reason than it was quite a bit less money. Took about a month to receive parts, but the parts are great and communication with the company has been great. Got the adapter, flywheel starter and necessary hardware to adapt my 312 y-block to a GM 700r4 or any such bellhousings. The motor and transmission are going in a 1957 Thunderbird that I am in the  middle of doing a frame off restore. I had to do a little fabrication work around the top center cross member to clear the transmission pan. Last night I took the body off the rotissorie and set it back on the frame to rough things up and it fit better than Henry would of done it. Stock shifter will work with very little effort. The drivshaft will have to be lengthened about 3 inches. All and all I'm pleased with the results and I'm sure the old 312 will appreciate the ability to loaf along in high gear. If you have any specific questions give me a shout. apierce@ispmgt.com and I'll try and answer.
