Its really not that uncommon. I removed the old gauges and the chrome trim rings then did some grinding on the holes to fit some SW gauges. I havn't done the speedometer yet but plan to use one of Speedhuts GPS units. The Speedhut gauges have threaded hold in rings the screw on the back of the gauge trapping it in the dash. I hadn't seen this setup before but I havn't bought gauges in many years so it may be common today. Good luck. Chuck

Look at Boese Engineering. They have several options for 56 fords. I used one of their systems for my 57 T Bird. http://www.boeseengineering.com/

Either Street Rodder or Rod and Custom just did an article on that. Can't seem to find it right now.

When you do the install, can you do a bit of a write up on it Chuck?
I had a look at the Speedhut units, I reckon the one with the alloy bezel would suit, but not sure about the gps pick up sitting on the dash...
Great idea tho, my speedo is reading about 80% with mustang 3 speed and 3.7 gears.

On my roadster I ran the GPS pickup near the front axle on top of the frame. The wire is pretty long so it can be positioned in many places. Perhaps behind the grill. I'll try to get some pictures of my setup and post them here. I'm really poor at writing instructions. Chuck

I have been looking at the Speedhut GPS Speedo also. With 15' of cable for the antenna I would think you could mount it someplace other than the top of the dash. I was thinking of routing it to the top of the windshield where it is less noticeable.
As I posted before in another thread about gauges I just want a small one (2 1/16") to mount with my SW gauges and leave my stock '55 Speedo in place. With Speedhut's customizing option it will look pretty close to my SW gauges.

My speedo in the bird is rebuilt and recalibrated with the use of a different gear in the AOD tans. However, still not very accurate. I use a GPS on trips OR I have an app called speedbox that I use on my Iphone. Both are independent of any mechanisms of course. The app is free, works on anything moving.

I replaced all the gauges on my 56 with Haneline gauges which are now discontinued. Whichever company you do go with, I think it's a benefit if they include matching, calibrated sending units...especially with the fuel gauge. Be aware that some companies charge a lot extra for their sending units and some include them with the cost of the unit.

I can see that in California now that it is illegal to use a cell phone while driving... But Officer! I saw you following me so I just picked up my cell phone to check my speed., haha.
I like the idea of a GPS tho. I know nothing about them. Would I need to subscribe to a 'service' to use a GPS with the maps and all. How does that work?

No subscription necessary. At least here in the states. I wanted to also mention that Speedhut offers a self adjusting fuel level gauge. I haven't installed one so I'm not sure how it works but it is supposed to be adjustable to any working tank pickup unit. Chuck

Here is a stock dash with Classic instruments gauges installed. I did have to cut a thin sheet of steel as an overlay as the gauge sizes were slightly off. If I were to do it again I would use New Vintage gauges.

That looks great. I bet a lot of people don't even notice the change. Chuck

This is my choice after I get this thing on the road. I found a place that will sell the 5'' speedo and 4 gauges as a package otherwise you have to purchase 2 kits.
