It's that time again to head back to old Mexico for the 26th running of the modern la Carrera Panamericana.

My daughter and I compete in the Original Class in a 1954 Ford Vic w/ a Mummert 292 Y block . This event covers 3000 kms over seven days on public roads w/ unlimited speed sections thru the interior of Mexico . It is of course fashioned after the original la Carrera that ran from 1950 -54 on the then new panamericana highway thru central of Mexico.

see more info www.lacarrerapanamericana.com.mx

Cool patatos! Can't wait to follow, love this event!

Hey Seppo, looks like there are two Finlander teams in Historic C class this year . car # 362 and car # 371 both are Ford mustangs . This is the largest and most competive class . We'll try and stay out of their way .

Carson,

I too enjoy reading about your accomplishments. This style of road race really intrigues me as this is where the performance of the Y really shines. Longevity in the speed runs time and time again is where it's at. I would give anything to be able to compete in an event like this one of these days. And I must say, as a family man myself it would be great to do the same thing with one of my daughters.

Go get 'em!
By texasmark1 - 11 Years Ago
Yeah, Baby!

LCP again... just remembered it tonight while looking at cars on Bring a Trailer.

Looking forward to each installment.

What the world needs is full length story on your car, complete with glamour shots!

best of luck to you both!

Looks good so far, keep it up!

Carson do you have more details on your car? specs and pics? I think we'd all like to see how you prepped the car.
By texasmark1 - 11 Years Ago
Talk,

I've asked the same question last year. if you will review the event coverage from 2012, you'll find some of the details that Carson provided then...

I think what we all want to see is an in-depth story... wish there was a mag that would take up the story and fill in the world on this great event and its #1 Y-block runners, Carson and Lauren!
By Y block Billy - 11 Years Ago
Looked on the hemmings link to the race and Carson is up to 31st after the 7th day. The lincoln is at 48th, these are the only 2 in the OP class that I can see, but out of 84 cars thats not bad!

Congratulations All!.
Carson you're a fortunate man, lovely daughter, good navigator, great car? Seven Medals! wow! Hope to meet up with the two of you sometime. Enjoyed Laurens Blog and all your adventures.
By Carson - 11 Years Ago
Thanks to all for the encouragement and kind words . This is a very unique endurance race/rally . Im indeed very fortunate to have my hija Lauren's support in and out of the car . We enjoy our humble image in the original class w/ our 4000lbs 1954 Ford Vicky running a Mummert 292 Y block producing a max 225 wrh/250 tq. Much of the satisfaction of finishing this rally is beating 2/3's of our friends in the Historic C group that run 5 lt engines putting out twice the hp and 2/3's the weight ( mustangs + falcons ) much to their amazement . A true testament to the reliability and toughness of the Y block. Stay tuned to Lauren's blog as there is mucho photos and wild in car video to come .

Ya-Hoo!

great video!

clear view, good audio, no problem with wind noise...

oh yeah, and there's the sweet growl of that engine!!

what do the numbers given along with each direction mean?
By Carson - 11 Years Ago
regarding the co-pilotos/ navigators pace notes : every turn, curve, bridge, crest, cliff etc for all 3000 kms / seven days are noted in the navigators route book ( see blog for photo of one page ) Each turn is rated 0 to 5 and left , right or straight w/ distance between. This is the info the piloto needs to maintain speed and gear selection or brake w/ down shift . Generaly a 0 to 1 turn is flat out, a 2 is lift throttle , a 3 is brake w/ downshift , a 4 is harder brake w/ downshift and rarely see a 5 but = heavy brake and hope there is a guard rail . The piloto need absolute confidence in the co-piloto to maintain a smooth and quick special section . Many cars have gone "off" because of co-piloto errors and of course ...drivers errors .
more to come , Carson

thanks for the explanation!

your experience is one that many of us would love to have, but few probably will...

right up there with our other fast friends...

Great stuff Carson. Love hearin' the Y-Block. Sounds like you have a great co-piloto. Maybe next year we'll sneak some heads and on it.
By glrbird - 11 Years Ago
That is what I was thinking, after reading about John's street engine dyno in Y-Block mag. One more question, I thought the Porche you blew past were road course machines?
By glrbird - 11 Years Ago
Here is some history of the first race, and even a Carson Vicky look alike.

Carson, I really am impressed with your accomplishments. You and your daughter make a great team and what better way to spend time with your family. You definitely have a lock on fun in that corner of the racing world.
By Carson - 11 Years Ago
Sorry John ... only iron heads allowed in my class.

It is interesting to see original footage from the 50's posted here .This is what attracted me to the rally. It is a honor to follow in the tire tracks of the greats from back in the day. Matter of fact we still race against 'em now . Memo Rojas and several World Rally drivers this year and we competed against two great Dutch drivers in the Original Class in the last several years , google Jan Lammers and Gijs von Lennep, both in a pre 356 A Porsche , both great gentlemen and gracious loosers to our Ford .

Carson, Maybe you could talk John into casting a couple heads in Iron!! Those two guys (Lammers and Von Lennep) are absolute legends in the Road Race/ Rally world.
By Hoosier Hurricane - 11 Years Ago
Some of the local lo-buck circle track racers in this area used to skirt around the iron intake rule of their class by mixing iron filings with the paint on the manifolds so a magnet would be attracted to them. I'm not suggesting this procedure for aluminium heads, am I? The high roller racers probably had their manifolds metal sprayed with a magnetic material.
By Y block Billy - 11 Years Ago
Great Job, you two make a great combo! Loved seeing you catch and blow by that Porsche! I would love to see the video's of when Curtis Turner had Bill France in the passengers seat for that race! From what I read Bill France had to change his shorts frequently!
By Daniel Jessup - 11 Years Ago
Carson the blog is great and the videos are just awesome. Driving like that on roads you know is one thing... doing what you do while listening to your daughter call out the grade of the turn, etc is just simply unbelievable.

Question... I noticed in the one video link that there were plenty of people on the side of the road just standing there watching with no barriers or anything. Looks pretty dangerous. Have you ever had to dodge people?
By Carson - 11 Years Ago
Hola, here is several clips of la Vic in motion
giddy up , Carson

I put together a low-res preview “rush" of all the clips we shot of your car along the race: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zx1oz2h3brxnwys/LaCarrera_Carson%20Car%20433.mov
By Hollow Head - 11 Years Ago
Even it said "not for distribution" I downloaded it. It was just too good to pass... Thanks Carson. Vicky goes so smooth around the bends and always ahead of Mustangs...
By The Master Cylinder - 11 Years Ago
Carson and Lauren, That's awesome, just awesome. Thanks for sharing that video with us "Armchair Racers". and congratulations on your finish.

Really enjoyed following along on your Blog also.

Got my fix for the day...
By Carson - 11 Years Ago
Thanks fellas, we did manage to finish ahead of 2/3 of Historic C class w/ seven mustangs ahead of us .
note : Those clips were after we had to replace a broken front shock w/ spares (rteplased both fronts which were much softer, there fore the car did not handle as well as w/ the PRO shocks ) not an excuss but more of an explaination why the cars looks to move around alittle in the fast sections .
That seven rally's in a row , plus two 3 day Chihuahua rallies on a Mummert 292 which has never been out of the car .
giddy up , el Carson
By Carson - 11 Years Ago
also note the clips driving along w/ the mustangs and porsche are during transit sections and not speed sections
the clip w/ green landscape was on mil cumbres section near Morelia and the later clips were from the last day near Zacatecas 8000ft elevation section called la Bufa

Thanks again for sharing. The yblock sounds great as always. And I especially got a kick out of the rooster crowing in the background!
By Carson - 11 Years Ago
I think we just ran over a flock of chickens... actualy it is a barn yard horn we have on board to amuze ourselfs and the local kids
but also a tribute to Clay Smith , recall his logo the cigar chompin rooster , who was the Lincoln team mechanic and co-piloto who won in the large stock car class in 1953 . He was one reason the hot rod Y block Lincoln dominated that class in the original days 1950-1954 OHLAY
