Hi Guy's, What are people running as far as mufflers or glass packs on a 57 fairlane 500, 292 4 barrel and a mild cam.

I'm getting Red's headers since others are not available yet. Now I'm deciding on the mufflers/glass packs. Don't want to wake the niehbers unless they %^$# me off.Smile

I'm interested in what people are running.

Thanks

Bob

I have Hooker Aerochamber mufflers with an X-Pipe now. I've had Purple Hornies glasspacks with an H-Pipe. Both with 2 1/2" pipes. On a more or less stock motor, the glasspacks probably will not be too loud but with power adders, they can become very loud. The Aerochambers have about the same tone and noise level at idle but are a little quieter during acceleration and much quieter at cruise.
At cruise with the Aerochambers, wind noise is dominant but you can have a conversation. At cruise with the Purple Hornies, exhaust noise is dominant and you have to yell to have a conversation and on just a 50 - 100 mile trip at highway speed, my ears would not quite be ringing but I could feel that pressure, you know what I mean.

I have a hooker cat back on my car and I like it, too. I like Hookers.

I'm still running the flowmasters with 2 1/2" pipes. But I don't run headers which does make a difference in the level of noise. You might consider a crossover or "H" pipe, that'll reduce the drone a little, and add a little low/mid range torque.

Hope your getting the Duel Tube Red's Headers. I'm running 26" Smithy's with 2 1/2" inlet and outlet, 2 1/2" pipes.

I agree completely on the crossover pipe. I'm running 30" glasspacks and didn't have the H pipe right away because the shop ran out of flanges while he was doing my setup. When we finally got the crossover in the sound was not as harsh and choppy and hp was noticeably higher and smoother.

Love the sound but I can also carry on a conversation while cruising at highway speeds.

Running smitty's, just started it up for the first time this year, took me back the summer of 62, that sound will never leave you. Gary

Stock 292 with 4 barrel ..old fashion dual 2" twin system with 22" smithys mounted halfway , original muffler position.. Puuurfect !

Unlike my pickup with the flathead.. I have no mufflers..oohh loud. When I come down my short street the young kid that lives about halfway down stops playing and puts his hands over his ears and has a very serious look on his face.. Very funny.

I'm running Red's Dual Tube headers with Magnaflow exhaust and no crossover pipe. I tried flowmasters but they rapped really bad when I let off on the gas. The Magnaflow have a deep, throaty sound and I like em' alot.

Bob;

I'm running 2&1/2" exhaust with Magnaflow stainless oval mufflers that are about 9"x18". Sorry I don't have the P/N handy (I know I have it somewhere). I'm also using 2&1/2" angle cut exhaust tips that extend just beyond the bumper.

Magnaflows here too. 2 1/4". At cruise very reasonable, nice rumble at idle & just so-so loud at heavy throttle. 2" pipes, no cross over. Although they are "Smithys" they have been called "Smittys" for years...
