A few prayers are in order for Hoosier Hurricane. He will be in the hospital in Muncie for some heart surgery today. They may place some stents or do other forms of artery enlargement.

John, They don't seem to be in much of a rush! Guess they figure you'll be OK till next week. Or else maybe somebody told them you got OBAMACARE!!

Steve, I don't think John ever did smoke, he hasn't in the 10-12 years that I've known him. But he is diabetic and that's probably the biggest contributor. I smoked for 40 years, so I should be the one on that table. Hard to explain how this works, ayy?
|
By pegleg - 12 Years Ago
|
Danny, read what Steve said, I really believe he's correct on the genetics/ heredity part. Modern medicine's a huge player also. My Dad almost died from Ulcer Surgery, they used to cut out large portions of the stomach! I had the same thing, and took two weeks worth of pills. Didn't even miss work! A few prayers can't hurt either.
Bill, you could be on to something there!

Hoosier Hurricane (5/15/2013) Guys:
Frank, I did use to smoke. Started in high school, quit when I was in my early 30s. When I tell the doctors I quit 40 years ago, they all say "good for you". By the way, my family Doc said I could drive my power steering tractor, so I've been planting soybeans. I didn't tell him that the planter tractor has no power steering or that the beans are 60# a bag. I've had no problems so far.
Tomorrow noon is my consultation with the surgeon. I'll post what happen next.
Didn't know that and B, be careful would ya?

GREENBIRD56 (5/23/2013) eventually he slowly shifted a bit to get another angle. Got stuck, had to persist a bit despite the pains ........ Parted a cable connection and his lines went flat! Right before his eyes! Ayaaaaaa!
Al told me it took a serious shot of "something" (probably morphine) to get him calmed back down again. Talk about a pressure test on the new plumbing.........I think they are a bit better at handling this today and keep the equipment out of sight.
That'd get you attention! I'm dead and I don't know it. when they took my Gall bladder out last year, I woke up in intensive care and it didn't hurt............yet. I was really worried that something was wrong, then it started.

Any news about John yet? I've been thinking about him and his ordeal all day ..... this sort of surgery takes courage and optimism - which he has without a doubt - but it always has some risks. Lets pray that for today - the risks are minimized and he gets the "WIN" light running away.
The family always spends more time thinking about the risk than the participants ...... I know I did when they repaired my Dad. I wish them well too.
|

I ended up on the "Angio" table in 1992 - and had to have a couple of blocked passages "stretched". One later closed again and I had it re-done in '93 - and OK since with meds. The stents weren't in use then. My doctor pressed me a bit about the "quit smoking" thing and I managed to shake it - but will still follow a guy with a sweet cigar just for a whiff!!!!! Gives you an understanding of the term "addiction".
The Doc's major contribution (aside from his expertise with a choke cable) was a quip about smoking - "You have recieved a message from God - "Do that again and I'll kill you".
|

As a "patient" you get a heavy duty education about the (multiple) causes of your problem. It turned out (for me at least) that its primarily a hereditary thing - lack of key bio-chemicals so to speak. Not exactly 100% pre-determined, but damn near........at any rate, a whole lot of us are repairable these days. My grandfather passed in 1957 (at age 57) and his death certificate has MY disease listed on it......today they could have fixed him one afternoon. My Dad's been gone two years now and he made it to 85 - so strides have definitely been made.
It came as a shock to me to find that the number one cause of heart disease is the fact that you have a near relative with heart disease - usually a parent, an uncle or aunt, a grandparent ......... I asked the doc how our family survived over the years when faced with such a certain, predictable problem - repair being a relatively new approach - and he said we said we must have some natural ability to suffer the problems and survive or recover. Otherwise, we would have gone by the wayside many generations ago. I think that means we have "symptoms" - and don't just drop over ........
So the survival trait is - find out that your family has a history of problems - and then learn to recognize the symptoms.

Thanks for the update Frank. We've all been wanting to hear some good news. Anyone who has had broken ribs can imagine what his pain is like - and many times worse. I hope he is able to recover quickly now - being back to full flow is a big advantage.
A friend of mine had four bypasses - many years ago now - and he awakened several hours later in the hospital recovery room, naked and lying on a table, hooked up to every device imaginable. He hurt like hell and was scared to move. Out of the corner of his eye he could see a monitor that seemed to be showing his vitals as traces on a screen. This then became an overwhelming curiosity to see how he was doing, so eventually he slowly shifted a bit to get another angle.

John, I had a heart attack and a double bypass in 1998, 2 days after I felt like I was 25 again. took me 3 months to recover, then wasn't alowed to lift more than 15 lbs for another 9 months. (no raking leaves, or riding my horse either) One year and 3 days from my operation I was on my horse's back flying thru the local park. I'm 71 now, still ride once a week, I'm slowing down but not because of my heart, do what the doc tells you, most importain, don't do what he tells you not too. Good luck....Lou

We will pray also on your behalf. My father-in-law recently had stents put in place SEVEN TOTAL! And he is still alive and kickin' after all that. His blockage percentages were very close to yours. Scared me half to death, but the Lord brought him through.

John, we will be praying for you out here in Winchester, Virginia. His way is perfect.
As far as the smoking thing, I personally have never smoked, but quite a bit of my relatives have been tobacco farmers down in the Cana, Virginia and Mt Airy, NC part of the south for a long time. Great Grandpa smoked a pipe for years and lived to be over 90. Go figure.

I don't understand how they would make you wait John? I waited a couple days from when I started getting the pain and they said never never never wait, I caused damage to my heart by waiting, now if it will ever heal?

Hoosier Hurricane (5/15/2013) Guys:
Yes, heredity plays a part. Dad had heart problems and strokes. His first heart attack was at the same age I am now. Mom had cancer. I'll have to play the hand that's been dealt me. Bill, you mentioned delays causing more damage. I figured they're getting ready for when we have government health care. They will keep dragging their feet with the old people so they will die waiting for treatment. That way the gov. won't have to pay for their medical care and can stop paying them social security.

John,
I expect you will have a very good outcome. I worked in Radiology for many years and assisted in angiography, cardiac cath lab, etc. The improvement of opening up restricted arteries and allowing for better oxygenating of the blood stream can bring remarkable changes. Having not smoked in so many years is a big plus. Good luck.

Guys:
Here's the scoop. What I had today was a "Heart Catherization", which is a diagnostic proceedure. If it shows that a stent will fix it, they go ahead and do it while they're there. What they found was arteries with 70, 90, and 100 percent blockage. Will be scheduling bypass surgery Monday. Thanks for all your concerns, comments, and prayers. I'm confident that with your help all will be fine in the end.

Steve:
No update yet. I missed the phone call from the surgeon because I was at another doctor's. I seem to have bronchitis, and the resulting violent coughing is not conducive to successful delicate surgery and recovery. You are right, the family is more concerned than the patient. I'm looking forward to getting the problem fixed. I'll return the surgeon's call in the morning, then I'll have a better idea what's coming. Thanks to all the Y's guys for their concern and prayers. God bless you all.

OK, here's the latest. Saw the surgeon today. He said medication and stents are not good options for me, so surgery is scheduled for next Wed. at 7:30 AM. He said to expect 3 to 5 bypasses, plus some laser treatment of arteries too small to bypass. About a 4 hour surgery, 4 to 5 days in the hospital, 2 to 3 months for total recovery. He said that at that time I could do anything I wanted. My wife takes exception to that.

OK guys, this is it. Tomorrow morning at 7:30 I finally start my operation. Still looking forward to it. I'll be absent here for about 5 days, so I'm counting on all of you to keep the interesting and informative chatter going. Again, thanks for all the well wishes and prayers.

Guys:
You're looking for updates, how about one straight from the horse's mouth? Today at noon I left the hospital for home, without all the tubes and probes stuck in my body. My chest aches, and I have pain meds, one of which is Oxycontin. Yikes! In fact, I just took one, so if my typing goes wacky, that's why. Doc says the operation went well. All the nurses said I was progressing very well. The doc was concerned when he made the first incision, said my blood was definately blue in color. When they finally blasted their way to my heart, he said that instead of it being the traditional valentine candy box shape, it was shaped like the letter "Y" on steroids, and across the top was the numbers 15486372. I told him not to worry, it was simply a disease I've had since I was a teenager.
I again want to thank all my Y block friends for their many well wishes and prayers. Some of you I have had the pleasure of shaking your hand and meeting you in person, some I have met on this forum, but I consider all of you my friends. May God bless you all.

You can't be coughing during recovery. You'll get a chest brace for sleeping, laughing, and the occasional cough. My friend Rick had a Bypass a few years ago. He came to Columbus with Tony and I one year. Now his diet is worse than ever. His favorite meal is butter with a side of steak and potatoes and he bleeds Dr. Pepper.
Be well, John.
