I reeeally need a set of rocker arm adjusting screws

Hey guys,

Now that its warm here in New England again, I'm finally getting my rebuilt 292 buttoned up! The only thing I am missing now is a set of rocker arm adjusting screws. I need the type with the 5/8" jamb nuts. I thought I had a good set but upon closer inspection, the ball ends on a many of them are worn lopsided and generally not in good shape.

Anyone got a GOOD extra set of 16 laying around? Would be happy to pay for them.

EDIT: Maybe these aftermarket screws would work? Just looked at Harland Sharp's website, and they list screws for Ford FE that seemingly will work on a y-block. Part # FA716K. Dimensions are 7/16-20 x 1.200", 3/8" ball. Check em out: http://www.harlandsharp.com/component.htm You guys think they'll work? Summit Racing carries them.

I can't vouch for the Sharp adjustment screws but I believe the screws you seek are still available from NAPA.

I also just discovered Crane Cams # 99680-16 also appears to be an aftermarket drop-in.

Matt, when you get to the bottom of this it would be appreciated if you could post the outcome. I have at least 2 loose adjuster screws and need to find something that will work.

I decided to order both the Harland Sharp AND Crane screws. Will check em out, take pictures, and come back with the verdict.

By the way, I called NAPA and no one could locate factory replacements. Whistling

Matt, the issue with aftermarket adjusters are that they are generally a true 3/8" diameter ball. The cup on aftermarket pushrods are usually a little over 3/8". There must be clearance between the 2 pieces for oil.Unfortunately, the original Ford adjusters were a little under 3/8" and the pusrod cups were true 3/8", or close to it.
When you use A/M adjusters with Y-Block or replacement Y-Block p/r's there might not be any oil clearance between the 2 pieces.
The correct adjusters will measure .365" +- or you must get custom pushrods made.

So John, I have your push rods. Do I use my original adjuster screws or do I need true 3/8" after market adjusters?

If you use high performance adjusters (Harland Sharp, Crane, Crower, Comp, Dove, ect) don't use stock or replacement pushrods.

That might explain the problems I had when I switched to the Dove rockers.

John, will the custom length pushrods I got from you have the larger cups? I got them a couple years ago and haven't put them in yet.

Got both the Crane and Harland Sharp adjuster screws in today. Turns out the Crane screws fit perfectly! The Harland Sharp screws do not. They are closer to a true 3/8", as John Mummert suspected. It is surprising because both the Crane and Harland Sharp screws are advertised to fit the same application (Ford FE), and both are advertised as 3/8" ball ends. However, and fortunately for us, the Crane screws do indeed have slightly smaller balls, nearly identical to factory y-block balls. They seat in the y-block pushrod cups perfectly!

The other positive about the Crane screws is that they are significantly less expensive than the Harland Sharp ones. The Crane screws are ~$50 while the Harland Sharp screws are ~$130. Both have allen socket ends. Both come with jam nuts. Both are well made.

We now know that the Crane screws part #99680-16 are a drop in replacement for factory y-block adjuster screws. I will be putting the Harland Sharp screws back in the mail. Can't wait to get this engine wrapped up!

Good work Matt. I assume they thread into the rockers nicely. My interference fit Ford rockers are very tight,except for the two that are loose.

Both the Crane and Harland Sharp screws physically thread into the rockers just fine. No noted looseness or anything funky.
