In the last issue, Jerry C. posted a picture of a 2 door wagon drag car. I think it belonged to a guy from Louisiana named John Frith. (or Fritch) That car was a national record holder for a few years. What I remember was that he had broke the last blower head he had and that Verne Shuman ground the 471 off a dumptruck head and recreated the correct casting using bondo body filler. A few coats of paint, the NHRA tech guys were none to the wizer. Does anybody out there remember anything about this guy?

A quick Google search turned up these pictures. Isn't the sedan the Parnum Payne car? Looking at the paint scheme I wonder if Gordon would know more about the wagon. Seems to be associated in some way. Chuck

Greg:

Your info is in error.  John Frith's car was purchased from Parham and Payne.  The wagon in the magazine was built and raced by my friend Bob Bayles, then from Danville, Il., he now lives in Van Nuys, Ca.  I wrote an article about the car and Bob for Bruce, hopefully he'll publish it in the next issue.  The last I heard of the Frith car was in Minnesota in sad condition.  I think Bill Parham inquired about the car, decided it would be much better to start with a better specimen, and dropped the whole idea.

I guess that explains the similar paint jobs! Some good old pictures at JalopyJournal. Chuck
