Need help choosing a carb

I am currently running 3 94's(2110's) on a Edelbrock 573 in my 57 Tbird. This a 312 stock displacement with Mummert aluminum heads, Mummert 270 Cam, Sanderson headers, dual Flowmasters, MSD/Petronix ignition, and a Fordomatic. It runs nice. I bought a new Mummert 4bbl Tbird intake and need to choose a carb. I want to see how well it will run with the new Mummert intake. Because the intakes are so easy to swap I like the ability to change back and forth to the 3x2 setup. My first thought was a 600CFM Holley, vac sec, electric choke. But after reading some of Ted's testing wondering if a Holley 750 4160 would be a better choice. This is the one I am looking at. Thanks.

Mark: Might want to look back here about a year & in YBM, if you subscribe, to John Mummerts test of a 337" engine. He found Summits own carb,(600cfm?) which is a new version in part of the old Autolite flat top & Holley 4110 type carbs. It worked well. As I recall, it performed better than a known 750 cfm Holley, and likely was more economical, due to the periphial fuel delivery into the throttle bores. He was pleasantly surprised by the results. Look it up..

I remember the article as well and was part of a test of engine combos IIRC. I have searched the archives here without luck. Summit is offering the carb in both 600 and 750 CFM configurations. I don't remember if the test was with the Mummert heads or not. I think Ted was talking about the 600CFM carb but not sure. Looked over his website articles too, but didn't find it.

Thanks for curing my morning brain freeze. John Mummert's carb test, not Ted's. Looks like decent choice at a good price. I also saw on the same Summit catalog online page replacement Holley type 2 bbls for the FE 3x2 set up. They are also offering a new 3x2 intake for the same. Very pricey but I don't remember many aftermarket 3x2 intakes for FE's due to the good unit made by Ford over the counter.

I always ask myself "what do I want to do" before buying any speed equipment for my vehicles. If I'm looking at wide open throttle it's entirely different from going to cruise inns. I like what Ten and John put up to help in my decisions. I'm an under 3500 rpm guy with my "Y" so I look to smaller barrels for the higher torque numbers. I love the look of 3-2's and I am figuring out how to do it using Rochester 2GC's rather than the Fords or Stombergs. The trans comes into play also............Good Luck

Mark.  And here’s the link to the carb testing article that was published in Y-Block Magazine.  Both of the Holley model 4010 600 and 750 vacuum secondary carbs were tested on the 312 dyno mule.  The carbs in question are #9 & #11 on the list.  Specific HP and TQ numbers are at the bottom of the article.

Ted, thanks for the link. The Summit carb (flat top) is one I have been looking at. After reading the attached article in the previous post that thoroughly evaluates that carb, I have some concerns about consistent build quality. This is the carb I am looking at also. Any thoughts?

To date, I’ve had good success with the Summit branded carbs.  Like any universal fit aftermarket carb, they are ‘universal’ and may require some tweaking to work satisfactorily on a given engine.  That just goes with the territory.  On another thought process though, the Holleys are noted for their excellent wide open performance but some of the other carbs out there do make better daily drivers without as much fuss.

 

I find quality issues even in the new Holleys which makes any new carb suspect when being run right out of the box.  After running a quick test of one of the new Demon Street Fighter (DSF) carbs on the dyno mule, I find that this may be a nice alternative carb for the Y engines.  And zero issues with the DSF carb that I ran in its out of the box configuration.  The smaller sized primaries makes the DSF carb lowend throttle response quite crisp and the adjustable  secondary flap makes this carb suitable even for the smaller displacement engines.  Here’s a link to the Demon Street Fighter carbs.

Thanks again Ted. Summit has their carb on sale today so in the interest of financial responsibility, I ordered one this morning. I need to finish the front disc brake install and then get the new Mummert manifold with carb done after that. Been cold here this week, 34 degrees in the AM, so it takes awhile to get my old bones freed up enough to turn some wrenches.

Does Summit sell a stack of those top plate gaskets in one package? Seems to me that when I had one of the "other" versions of that "new" carb, they were a royal PITA to keep around.

Or do I have this Summit carb confused with another that seals like an Autolite?w00t

Building another set-up, I think I'd be prone to try one of the 600cfm "Slayer" carbs...

I think the Summit carb is a copy of a Holley. I'm not sure of the model number but there was a Holley that was similar looking to the Autolite.

Here are some photos of the Summit carb sitting on the Tbird Mummert intake. I was taking measurements and trying see if I have enough hood clearance. The adjustment nuts for the float levels has me thinking about air cleaner fit. Nice carb. I like the new idle circuit adjustment locations and the fuel level sight glasses which are big enough to see easily.
