A good friend and fellow Ford guy named John Hildebrand is planning a Y-Block Shoot out for the weekend of May 4-5 at Barona Raceway.
Barona is an NHRA 1/8 mile track located in San Diego County.
There is free overnight camping available.
Below is the email he sent to Bob Martin to get things started.
Barona Raceway is featured in the current issue of DeLux Car Kulture and John's Model A made the centerfold.
Bob,
My name is John Hildebrand (56 T-bird 312 C-4). I subscribe to Y-block magazine and work with John and Geoff Mummert. We are looking to put together a West Coast Y-Block shootout similar to what you write about in the Y-block magazine. I race at our local track Barona 1/8th mile dragstrip and have talked to the owners. They suggested a May 5th date. This would be the 2nd day of a two day race. The May 4/5th weekend at Barona is a pair of Summit races. Often the Sunday race is not as filled as the Saturday. Barona is a nice 1/8th mile NHRA track with free camping overnight on race weekends. This would also give Y-block racers a chance to test and tine on Saturday before the Sunday Shootout. Racers could even tow in on Friday and get pitted if they are also racing on Saturday.
I would be interested in any suggestions or help you could offer. I am sending this to Bruce at the magazine to keep him in the loop. John and Geoff and I are working on a Y-block motor to put into a 1931 model A coupe that I now race with a Cleveland motor. I am now retired from work and so have time to co-ordinate this event.
Sincerely,
John Hildebrand

John Hildebrand, are you retired Army Security Agency? Chuck
By bird55 - 12 Years Ago
cool, that's only a 21 hour drive for me if I don't stop BigGrin

I might just think about it, course I'll have to stop a few times. road trip in May???
By Buzz - 12 Years Ago
I would be interested in doing this since I live in L.A.!! I checked the Barona site looking for rules to prep my car since I've never raced it. Can someone tell me where to look? I'm sure there is a site
By mctim64 - 12 Years Ago
I think I can make that!  I've been wanting to take Elwood to Barona anyway. Smile  We will be at Mooneye's X-mas show next week at Irwindale if anyone down in LA land want to come by and say "Hi".
By MarkMontereyBay - 12 Years Ago
I would be interested in making the drive down to Barona possibly bringing my 57 Bird. Still a long haul and would need to work out transport. I have never raced (legally) and need some education to the rules. I have noticed in the Yblock Magazine photos that all the Tbirds race with the hard tops installed. Is this required?
By bird55 - 12 Years Ago
No, it's not required either way. running the hardtop on your bird allows you to not wear a helmet otherwise you have to. Also there is a speed/et limit for helmets but most street birds are within it. Wearing a helmet in any case is a good idea.

Doug Thrasher wrote some good articles on basic beginning drag racing in Yblock magazine years back if you can locate them or they may be on here someplace archived.

FYI, I think I read that's a 1/8th mile track? If so that's even better IMHO. Easier on your car, someone still wins. lots of fun.

You kidding! you live to close compared to most, you have to go.
By MarkMontereyBay - 12 Years Ago
Yea...It would be fun but not so sure about driving the Bird down there and back through the SoCal freeways and traffic. Really hate the idea of a breakdown in that mess. Trailering it down would be an option but needs some planning and decent tow vehicle. Don't think my 65 Galaxie would appreciate climbing the Cuesta grade and Grapevine lugging a trailer and Tbird.

Yea...It would be fun but not so sure about driving the Bird down there and back through the SoCal freeways and traffic.

Mark, California may be a relatively big state but unfortunately most of the North/South highways are funneled thru the LA basin.w00t I'm south of that "mess" Smooooth (well NOT that far south, I can see the Hollywood sign on the hills in the distance from upstairs) but we still have traffic with people going to and from the LA area.

John, the WEST SHOOTOUT sounds like fun, looks like a nice track up in them hills BigGrin.

If this event becomes a reality, I will most likely rent an RV/Box Van/Truck and trailer.
By John Mummert - 12 Years Ago
NHRA requires a helmet for cars running 13.99 or faster in the 1/4 mile.

The Wallace racing calculator converts this time to 8.94 1/8 mile.

A stock 312 T-Bird runs mid to high 10 seconds in the 1/8 mile.

It take s a pretty good street driven Y-Block to break in to the 8 second range in the 1/8th.

Drive shaft loop is also required at this speed

I don't know what particular Snell rating is required for the helmet.

Coolant catch can is also required.

Seat belts required. Faster than 7.65 1/8th mile requires harness.

According to NHRA a roll bar is required on convertibles running 13.99 1/4 or faster ( 8.94 1/8th mile) The T-Bird Hardtop might make this un-necessary.

The May 5th date has a conflict with Fun Ford Weekend in Bakersfield.

Any thoughts?
By MarkMontereyBay - 12 Years Ago
Is May 5th the best date or is there any flexibility?
By Buzz - 12 Years Ago
'56 Ford Crown Vic 312 (supercharged) - check

catch can - check

seat belts - check

I think I just passed tech

see you all there - anytime in May is OK with me. However, I'm taking the car to the Fabulous Fords Forever show in mid April - so that's my only conflict.
By MarkMontereyBay - 12 Years Ago
As far as the May 5th date conflicting with the Bakersfield Famoso Ford weekend I will most likely choose to come to Barona. Haven't been to the Fun Ford weekend yet and I would like to go but supporting the beginnings of a West Coast Y Block event is more important. Maybe some day it could be incorporated into the Famoso event.

Buzz,

This is John Hildebrand. I'm coordinating the West Coast Y-Block shootout at Barona drag strip on May4-5th. Barona is an NHRA track and the instpectors generally use the NHRA rulebook. The basic rules for 14 sec (8.60 1/8th) and slower are that you must have a Helmet (SA2005=2005 or newer), a water ovreflow catch on the radiator and a seat belt for your car. As you start getting faster then more safety gear is needed. Barona iis a nice track with free overnight camping. You can come down Friday and spend the night then test on Saturday and race in the shootout on Sunday.

ps: There is a Fun Ford weekend at Bakersfield on the same weekend. Would this be a conflict for you?

Alan,

Barona has free overnight camping. You could tow in on Friday and test on Saturday and then race in the shootout on Sunday. Make it a full weekend if you tow that far.

ps: there is a Fun Ford Weekend at Bakerfield on the same weekend. Would that be a conflict for you?

i've been thinking of checking out barona the past year.

good reason!

Sounds like it should be a good time. Any of you guys east of the left coast think you can make it?
By John Mummert - 11 Years Ago
2 months to go. We gotta get this engine done soon and test out some of our new ideasWhistling.. Hopefully it all works out.
By Y block Billy - 11 Years Ago
New Ideas? oh oh, Johns at it again! whats he going to come up with now I wish I could afford? (on another note: I could probably afford anything he has if I wasn't married)
By John Mummert - 11 Years Ago
Billy, we're building a Y-Block to replace the 377 inch Cleveland that John Hildebrand is currently running in his Model A. In fact he will be at the Bakersfield March Meet this weekend, with the Cleveland still in the car. We had a pipe dream of getting to Bakersfield with the Y in place but our pistons have been "some time next week" for over a month. The new Y is 344 inch with a Crower crank and rods, skunk works heads and if time allows a custom 2-4 intake.
Still a long way to go on the new project so we will be happy to get it to the Shoot Out.
By MoonShadow - 11 Years Ago
That would be great Jim. Its been too many years since you were able to make the trip. Are you planning to ride up with Ted or will we see your Y this year? Chuck
By jhildebr - 11 Years Ago
Tim,Glad to have you at the West Coast Yblock Shootout. I've attached the racer info form that Bob Martin sent me. We are offering a special deal to the Yblock racers. For $10.00 we'll include a event Tshirt and a poster. Please fill in the info sheet and include your tshirt size if you want the $10 deals and send it back to me. You can send the form to any other Yblock racers you may know that want to come. You can load in on Friday at the track for free overnight camping.

See you on May 3-5th

Mark,

This is John Hildebrand. I’m coordinating the West Coast Y-block shootout at Barona drag strip. We have arranged for the cars to load into thetrack on Friday May 3rd for free weekend camping at the track. We are offering a special deal to the racers who want an event tshirt and poster for just $10. Please fill out the attached racer info sheet and send it back to me with your t-shirt size if you want the deal. We are working to arrange a deal at some of the local hotel/motels if you don’t want to camp at the track.

We hope you can make it down.

Moonshadow,The poster and Tshirt have a white 56 T-bird and my 1931 Ford coupe on the back. With the Lettering/logo over the top of the cars. This is done by a profeessional company locally and looks great. The shirt colors will be light grey, medium grey or black. Specify your size. TheTshirt (yblock racer price) will be $12 advance plus shipping. and $15 day of the race, I'll throw in a poster for another $1.

Hi Mark,

Drag racing 2 seat T birds almost always requires the Hard top in place or soft top up whereas when autocrossing it is not required, go figure. If you have a roll bar they might feel differently. The only exception was here at the local 1/8th mile track when I showed up without the top but with a helmet and whined piteously when tech tried to send me home for the top. They said never again without the top and T birds that race are so rare that they will remember.
By John Mummert - 11 Years Ago
Did a little testing at the Antique Drags yesterday with the new 343ci Y block. We got to test the car and some of our new parts. All and all it was pretty successful. The motor and the car worked really good for our first day out. The motor got on the dyno Friday morning and was broke in. The rockers were changed out to the new Mummert 1.7's and after lunch we flogged 9 pulls out of her before we yanked it and went and thrashed for another day and a half to make Sundays festivities.
The first 5 pulls were used up watching the jetting and and sneaking up on the rpm. We made a jetting change and set the timing to 35 degrees and pulled her 4 more times. 535hp@ 6800 and 460ftlbs @5300.
Specs on the motor to come.
We ran our best ET of 6.53 legging it out in second and our best MPH of 103.35 in 3rd. Gearing change was the first thing that came to mindHehe.

Like all of these projects it was an up hill battle but seeing it go was worth it.
By Archangel007 - 11 Years Ago
That is excellent John, well done!!
Cant wait for the spec sheet!

You didnt take any video of the pulls by any chance??

Cheers,

Tricky

WOW!
By John Mummert - 11 Years Ago
Here are specs on the motor:

Bore: 3.82" Racetec 7.5 cc dome
Stroke: 3.75" Crower lightweight 42lbs
Rods: 6.30 Crower Maxi lite 300M
Heads: Mummert Angle milled version 56cc 1.96x1.52 valves ported
Cam: ISKY custom grind 260@.050 intake 254@.050 exhaust .590int .572int
Lifters: Trend tool steel ( these take 5/16 ball, important to know when ordering pushrods)
T Chain: New Mummert Nitrided 9 way roller set
T Cover: Interceptor marine cover, this was used in anticipation of new shortened timing cover that accepts factory Y block pump.. We figured one of Teds new water pumps would look real good on it.
Rockers: New Mummert 1.7 rollers
Pushrods: .080" wall Smith Bros. 8.08" effective length
Springs: Beehive
Valves: 1.96" Ferrea Hollow stem intakes 1.52" Mummert OEM valve reduced o.d.
Manifold: Mummert alum. ported
Carb: Proform 850
Oil Pump: NOS Modded to drop oil through cover do to the fact that oil filter will no longer fit.
Block: 1956 292 lightened 14lbs
Fuel: VP110 Oil: Kendall SuperD with Lucas break in supplement
Compression: Just over 13.0:1 static
As far as Dynamic goes we didn't worry about it too much seeing that its not a pump gas engine.

We may do some testing with some other fuels later that have proved themselves in the ATV world. But for now she just had to get running. Sunday was the last racing weekend before the SHOOTOUT.

Theres more weird stuff but this should get things rolling.
By Archangel007 - 11 Years Ago
Excellent specs John, well done!! BigGrin

What static and dynamc CR's did you end up with in the end??
By bird55 - 11 Years Ago

Gee John all this time I thought you were fired up to help us support OUR passion for the Y. But look at you now! Wild looking coupe. Is that time for a 1/8 mile or does John H. now have the worlds fastest Y? Now, no more excuses, you guys HAVE to come to Columbus this year. Chuck
By MoonShadow - 11 Years Ago
Just another thought, didn't one of our member show up with a car transporter one year? What if we could get a group of cars togather and trailer out. Combining cost would be a deal maker and the trip could be made with several drivers. Just a thought!

When I was a kid we had fast cars and hot rods in the midwest but it always seemed that the real action was on the west coast. Long summers make some of the difference but here I am again, 70 years old and all the action seems to be on the west coast AGAIN! Chuck
By John Mummert - 11 Years Ago
Chuck, definitely 1/8 mile. At present our 1/4 mile time would be 10.20 more or less. For now a weight reduction plan for the car and some new rear gears. Trying to get to 9.99 1/4 mile time.As to Columbus: That's up to John Hildebrand

People are always talking about their "Bucket List" today. I can't imagine an avid Y's guy that wouldn't have Columbus on that list. On the local tracks you find a few "I used to run one" and even the occasional Y's guy in arms but at Columbus "we are the world". Full immersion in the Y-block passion for 3 whole days. Surrounded my some of the best, and fastest, Y-Blockers in the world. I put it right up there with Bonneville! Chuck

Where are the chambers on those heads?
By aussiebill - 11 Years Ago
John, thanks for pictures and details, you have the bottom end pretty stock, i was sure you would of had steel or reinforced main caps, a y block looks so good in A model coupes. We all wish john (owner) and your crew the best results on race day.Smile
By John Mummert - 11 Years Ago
Heck I thought we left those chambers pretty bigLaugh.. It our first race motor in a few years. Trying manufacture parts has really eaten up the time to do the fun things. This motor is giving us a chance to try things that have been on the drawing board for a while.

Bill by reducing the weight of the rotating internals it effectively increases the strength of the existing parts. We feel that Y is starting to produce the HP per/ci of the later V-8s but we feel its a little heavy. Obviously the host of aluminum parts being manufactured help combat this.
Our opinion is that the block is one part that could use a diet. Its an experiment as many other things, so we'll give it a whirl and see where it takes us.

Thanks for posting the pictures and the video and thanks to everybody who took the time and effort to set-up the event. Events like these are the most fun for our group. Hopefully we can continue to have more events around the country and get everybody together to share information and enjoy our special cars.

I regret missing the event, but I am making progress on getting my car and new parts combo dialed in. I've been spending time right now setting-up for race trim right now, and I'm about to begin transitioning it to prepare for the first part of Hot Rod's Power Tour starting June 1st. My goal is to start making some vintage drag races with it.

Joe Cebe made it to the final round in his 57 T-Bird against Todd Ferguson in the white 56 T-Bird. Joe dialed around 9.80 based on what he had been running all day. Joe broke out by nearly .6 of a second and was the happiest loser you will ever see. All smiles after running by far his best time ever in the car.Our pits weren't really busy most of the day until the lunch break when everyone gathered around for burgers and hotdogs sponsored by JBA and Crower. Food brings 'em running.
Everyone that made it to Barona had a good time. Buzz only had plans to race his Crown Vic this year but I suspect he'll be back next year.
Thanks to everyone who sent pictures and videos. We have so many we could do pages of pictures.
By jhildebr - 11 Years Ago
Slight correction to the above post. Buzz Brandt was the runner-up in the Bracket 1 (winners) final of the shootout. Joe and Todd raced in the first round where Joe ran too quick. Joe kept getting quicker all day. He eventually ran a 9. 285. Buzz and Todd won both of their rounds in the "double elimination" bracket race which put them into the main final. Joe won the second round when Charley Bignall red lighted. Joe raced John in the '31 coupe for the "Bracket2" (one loss) round and was elated even though he lost the round because he ran a best time of 9.285 for his '57 "E" code T-bird. I'm attaching the Shootout results in an Excel sheet for those who want to see what the time were. The '31 Coupe actually ran a 6.36 in earlier rounds before the Shootout.

A couple other things they will look for.  Battery securely tied down (no tarp straps) and a radiator overflow catch can of 16 ounce capacity.   Seat belt.  Now you are good to go.

Just to forewarn, I booked Ted's and my room in Heath for Expo. Looking forward to seeing everyone this year, I have missed too many of these!

On another note, I received the flyer for the west coast shootout today and have requested info from Bob Martin on other events for this season so that I can put the 2013 events page online.

I'll retire at 5:00 pm on August 23 so that I have no issues with making the shootout for this year.

John. Congrats on a very stout engine. And the performance in the car simply validates those dyno numbers. Great job. Let’s hear more details on that combination when you get a chance.

Thanks for sharing the video. That coupe looks to be wicked fast and especially off of the line.
