We're on our way... this is the 25th anniversary of the historic Mexico road race /rally. Seven days over 3000 kms in the Sierra Madre mountains of central Mexico all unlimited speed sections . Quite a collection of vintage cars in our original class. We have two '54 Lincolns and my '54 Ford all powered by Y blocks ( mine is a Mummert 292 w/ iron heads like the driver ) also a '50 Lincoln that ran in the first LCP. If interested check out the official site w/ list of competitors , route etc . www.lacarrerapanamericana.com.mx also my co-piloto/ daughter will blog at www.lscheller.blogspot.com giddy up , Carson

Carson, let the Vicky fly on those twisting roads of Mexico! I really enjoyed that first part of Laurens blog. She's telling the truth and nothing but the truth . I wish you good luck and highest position on the podium. About the GoPro camera... there is two options to choose for audio. Sensitive and not so sensitive for applications with loud noises. Sensitive should be ok inside the car but not outside thus the wind.

As all stated, good luck, be safe, and go like a bat out of hell!
I read the story of Curtis Turner taking Bill France
As a copilot when they were still buddies, I think 57 but may have been 56 in a Y block no dought, I think Bill would have worn Depends if they were invented at the time.
You don't scare Your daughter to justify the need of them I hope!

Carson is still going strong and has been on the podium several times in six days. They sure have had some issues during the race, but also been on the road all the time is good. Lot's of wrecks beside the roads of Mexico, though.... Keep on going Carson, Giddy up! Laurens plog is great!

Something about this race really resonates with me... maybe because I grew up in deep south Texas just across from the boarder, going into Matamoros for supper on occasion. I'd really like to see the '54 details... pics of the engine, interior, undercarriage... and hear about what's in the car and how it was built! Anyplace to find this info? Mark

Seppo, Congrats to the Finn team which finished 6th in Historic C class and 14th overall in a '64 Falcon w/ a 302 which is a very good showing in a very competitive class. We battled it out in Original Class w/ a beautiful pre '54 porsche driven by Dutch F1 and 3 x Le mans winner Gijs van Lennep. In the real twisty speed sections it was reported that he was heard repeating " not good for the Ford " as he was light and very quick yet we would make it up on the high speed sections and pulled away to a 2 minutes lead at the finish. Lauren will post in car video on her blog . Unfortunatly other cars in our class had problems ,the 1950 Lincoln ( flat head V8 ) did not make it down to the start and one '53 Lincoln capri blew it's motor the second day and the '54 lincoln capri ran slow toward the end w/ rear end issues . The beautiful '54 Chrysler had trans problems the fifth day . As you know it is a test of endurance ... both for the cars and drivers + navigators.. everyone that finishes is a winner and Iam very satisfied that in the last three years w/ my daughter as co-pilot this year we finished every speed section every day for all seven days . That's why we finished 32 overall in a 4000lbs '54 Ford powered by a 230hp/300tq Y block. giddy up amigos , Carson

Thanks all for your encouragement . This event is difficult to discribe if one has not followed along . It's all about the cars ( from all over the world ) the people not only the competitors and crews but the people of Mexico who are unbelieveably enthusiastic and most of all the beautiful country of Mexico . Where else can you go unlimited speed on closed roads for seven days in "vintage " cars ? My '54 Ford Victoria was built by Tom Rolland in Round Rock Tx who campaigned it in '04+'06. He striped it down to bare shell and put it back specificly for this rally. It's strip out w/ full cage ,two FIA race seats + 5 point race belts , full set of auto meter gauges, intercom system , 22 gal cell w/double fuel pumps , filters, full skid plates underside, reinforsed A arms, all neo bushings ,custom leafs in back and front coils , race shocks ,big alum rad w/ elect fans, race power steering system oil cooler , alum jack and spare tire in trunk w/ bag of tools.all side windows are plexiglas. Three speed top loader w/ overdrive sytem ( gear-vender) , 9 " floater rear end . 15x7 steel wheels and 225/60/15 w/ BFG G force sport engine was built by John Mummert in '06 and we now have 6 la carrera'a and two chihuahua express rallys on it . Custom coated headers, Holly 600cfm HP DB w/ 2" carb spacer ( thanks Ted ) did I mention the harmonic balancer came loose last week. we pulled over and another service crew cut it of in about 10 minutes and off we went... runs just fine less about 10lbs. She's a war horse and handles like a sports car like dependable like a F100 truck. Watch out porsches . giddy up , Carson

I forgot to mention two other cars in our class a beautiful '54 Nash which slide into a ditch on day four which put it on the trailer and a fabulous '53 Hudson Hornet which suffered a collapsed front wheel but made repairs and carried on to the finish our friends in exhibition class with a '49 Caddy on a Z06 chassie www.usa476 .blogspot.com more photos of cars + events http://lscheller.smugmug.com/Other/La-Carrera-Panamericana-2012/26209904_VnjmdP#!i=2182188536&k=ws7HXjx

Fun to see AND hear how impressive the Yblock sound is compared to the other cars.
What a blast this would be to be a participant. Here I go, living vicariously again!

Greetings , here is a clip of one high seed section http://youtu.be/WDe1ky0PDQM if you turn up the sound you can hear my navigator Lauren giving me the turns example : a "left one " is flat out and a "right two " is a little more of a curve etc. thank you John Mummert for a dependable Y block engine giddy up

Carson, congratulations, again. First in class. Must be your navigator. for those who need to be told something is a joke. Found a clip of the 54 in a high speed section http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCBteKQFf_4&NR=1&feature=endscreen
about 2:15 into the video
As I recall the engine is 3.77 bore, 3.37 stroke= 301 cu in 6.250" H Beam rods, Y292S cam, ported G heads, B-T intake. 1.54:1 stock rockers, Probe forged pistons. Don't remember the dome size. Power numbers Carson quoted are rear wheel

Thanks for reposting! I do believe that I'm getting hung up on LCP! The engine is the finest sounding one of all the clips out there on utube! What speeds are you hitting during that segment? Mark

Greetings, JM is right .. one can have the fastest car and be a wheel man but when your navigator makes a mistake it can take you out of competition ( penilty time added to you speed time ) or take you over a cliff. This happened this year as five cars went into a very steep gully on top of each other. I would guess our top speed in that one clip was around 100mph. my speed indicator is in kms as is the navigators odometor to measure time + distance and keep track of where we are in the route book. Our top speed of the week was on a long straight toward the checkered flag we hit 205kms ( 125 mph ) and when I lifted at the finish line the power steering belt flew off , luckily there was more straight to whoa her down . Lauren will try and finish up her blog and post more in car video this weekend. giddy up
