I am helping my 16 year old son build a 292 y-block for his 1948 f1. I looking for help with the cam selection. We are planning on running a thee two carb set up, 312 G heads and 9:5:1 compression. The truck has a ford AOD trans and 3.73 gears. The truck should be around 2000 rpm @ 65 mph. We would love this thing to have a little lope, but don't want to change the  torque converter, or have grief tuning the carbs.

Shoot for advertised duration of around 260 and 210 degrees of duration @ .050 lift.



If you want a little lope have it ground on a 108 LSA. The worst mistake you can make is to put too big a cam in it with your combo

I still like the factory blower cam for mild street use. Regrinds or repo's are available. Mummert also has a good mild street cam.

If you are interested I have an Isky F300 grind cam you can have for shipping costs.  I had it in my y-block build for about 400 miles then I put a turbo on it an had a new cam cut from Isky.  I even have the lifters that I bought with it with the same miles on them.  Cam made great power and had a great lope at idle.  Very streetable and it did very well in my 62 F100 4X4.  If you want just pay the shipping and you can have it.  If I build another y-block it will aslo have a turbo on it so I will not need this cam.  I would rather someone use it then it just sit in my shop.

Many years ago, I had an "rpm 300 Isky" cam in a 312. Much as described above. I currently have a Mummert 270 in my 'bird, highly modified motor, and a 280 in a very light roadster, with an F code. I'd look at the 270 for a base reference, but I'd bet the Isky is the best bet if the old/new specs are the same. I really liked the Isky, but 35 years is along time ago.

Comp cam advertises 224 @ ,050 with a running duration of 270 with a stock converter. I now wish I had gone with that combinaton in my 56 sunliner with a similer build as you have instead of the 220 @ .050 running duration 260 I have now which seems undercammed. I am running a single 4v carb.

Anyone tried one of the Comp Thumper cams in our motors yet? I've been hearing decent things about them in other motors. Everyone says they did a good job getting a good lope out of 'em without killing bottom end. Dyno tests have even shown they're outshining previous expectations of performance.

Hutz....if the OP doesn't take you up on that offer let me know. I might take you up on it since the F300 was one of the cams I've been eyeballing. Wink
