I have a 62 Mercury with 2 speed Fordomatic water cooled.  I'm wondering which cooling version was better, and if an air cooled Fordo would fit up to the SBF, as there is a '55 3 speed unit on hand.

Mike:

The trans will bolt up by using a small block FMX bellhousing, but the converter will be a problem.  I don't know of any that has the small block snout and the FOM pump drive.  You could convert the FOM to FMX front pump and input shaft, that will require a complete trans teardown.

Thanks John.  It sounds like a can or worms Wink, especially since I am all thumbs around transmissions .  Oh well.

Better to go with a C-4. Much lighter and more efficient.

Can you clarify what engine is in the 62 merc? If it is a 221 0r 260 SBF then it is also a 5 bolt bell that Ford changed to a 6 bolt in 1964 1/2. The Master Cylinder is correct the C4 is the transmission of choice. I drove a Ford Falcon Sprint 260 and 2 speed FOM for several years as my work car and although never exciting it did work well.

If you change to a C4 get the right bell for the block. Pete

Thanks for the information Pete.  The engine is a 221.  I've decided to keep everything stock.  The car is completely original now and in really good shape for its non restored age.  I drove it to town a couple days ago for registration and two new rear tires.  Like you said not exciting engine wise, but it goes.  The car is like a boat compared to the '46, Honda, and Ranger.
