I removed the front end sheet metal on my 56, surprizingly had about 1 in 4 body and fender fasteners. Out of 16 possible on the splash pan had four, on the fenders and wells about the same. I want to use later model fasteners (bolts and u nuts) the 5/16 24 can be saved for someones restore, does anyone know which late model fasteners work on 1956 sheet metal?

I don't know, but you can find many of those types of things at mcmaster-carr. I've bought quite a few fasteners which were almost identical to the originals. They're listed by the dimensions. You may have to buy them in bulk, though.
You're not looking for identical, but they may have what you are looking for.

One of the thunderbird suppliers has a complete front sheetmetal bolt kit,I need to get one for my 55 when it comes back apart for paint.

I just replaced the 5/16"X24X1" sheet metal bolts on the upper radiator valance with stainless button head bolts and stainless flat washers. I polished the bolt heads and washers and against the black of the valance I think they look really good. I kept the original cage nuts on the back side just because I think they are handy and don't fall out of position. Also, I used stainless flat washers on the front that were the same diameter as the flange on the original bolts. I kept most of the original 5/16" bolts on the inner fenders. Didn't see any advantage in changing them. The cage nuts that were rusted out I replaced. Rono

I love stainless fastiners where originality is not a concern. Local Ace Hardware has great selection. Not cheap but they have them in individual pieces. Used a lot on my '65 Mustang Rat Rod.

Gonna find something that works, I think 60 vintage ford may fit 5/16 - 18 and hopefully the body nuts will line up, I'm missing bunch of the females and the 24 thread is really painfull doing two/three clicks on the rachet and an inch of thread, even tho teebird or someone has them (expensive) I'll leave that for the concours guys and offer mine up after the change, don't want to mix and match. Tee bird products (and others) sell complete fastener kits with all the correct nuts, bolts, and washers to attach front sheet metal (among oother assys). Usually pretty decently priced, and saves a bunch of time...
