Needed some reading material while travelling to SC this morning, errr yesterday morning, it after 1:am now. On page 56 there is a small picture of Teds entry in 2010 and mention of developing a new nostalgia class for 2012, the only downfall is they mention engines such as mopar hemis, buick nailheads, early olds, Pontiacs,Cadillacs, flat head Ford and More, But no mention of Y blocks.

What is it going to take before they will ever mention one of the best designed 50 year old engines out there? A win in the nostalgia class might get a mention, John, Ted, what can we all do to help you make it happen?

Thats so NORMAL for the scrub loving world. They use a picture of a Y-Block in the article then ignore the engine and its current accomplishments. Chuck

I think you are reading too much into that one. The fact that Ted's Y is what they chose for a picture tells me that they like it a lot. After all, they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

I haven't seen the article, but you seem to imply that the sbc was not mentioned. That's interesting because it could technically qualify. In the Scrub loving world where the sbc is not mentioned, that's significant.

I think people are generally getting tired of the sbc this, sbc that related material. What goes up must come down. With what, 50 years as the center of attention, it begins to loose it's luster.



I think the hemi would be the only real challenge.



I wonder what the rules will be. I think to keep it competitive, it should be era correct factory heads only because some of the vintage stuff just won't have the option of aftermarket heads. If the SBC is included (and any other common engine for that matter), it should be limited only to what was possible with the technology of the era for 265, 283, and maybe even 327. I.e. no 450+ci small blocks because it simply would not have happened and no Vortec heads because they weren't around at that time, etc. If an sbc was allowed to take advantage of its 55 years of development, nothing else would stand a chance. I think that would make for a very interesting competition. Then we can see which vintage engine really is the best.

I agree it would be interesting. Ran 292's and 312's on the street and strip since 1963 and never found anything in the same class that I could not either beat or be extremely competitive with.

Maybe some SOHC 427's would show, those would be hard to beat.

They could have at least mentioned something like the Picture on the left is a Y block that competed in the 2010 competition and was a solid performer Bla Bla bla, but no mention of it whatsoever.

I recently read an article on all comers limited displacement engine HP contest. There was one Y block entry. It was disqualified for having Mushroom Tappets. So much for All Comers. Upstaging sbc harkens back to 1957 Speed weeks in Daytona where Y blocks ruled. GM withdrew from supporting racing and talked Ford and Chrysler into withdrawing too. That was the end of the F Birds, and anything else that could upstage the backdoor support provided to sbc users. GM sells 427 ci sbc crate motors. The emphasis will always be on the sbc. Chevy won their second NASCAR race in 55 and "withdrew" in 57.

I noticed on the newstand recently, a HRM article re: "Best 10 engines of all time (selected by our readers)". What a crock! Naturally, no mention of the Y-Block, and # 1 was the sbc. No surprise, since anyone who knows the real story/history would never bother to read HRM!
