If I want to drive it next summer it will have to stay small block powered so saturday I am going to look at a 60,000 mile 1970 351-W to use while I get the 292 rebuilt,I really did not want to do it but it will give me time to build the 292 the way I want it and will have use for the 351 in my 65 custom 500 when the Y block gets installed in the 55. The 351 that is presently in it has a severe noise and do not trust it for another Florida trip next year,I think it has pistons slightly hitting the heads and no way I can fix it in the car and since that 351 is built from miss matched parts I will probably end up using it for parts, that noise has probably been in there since the beginning and just now noticed it after I got the driveline quiet and the motor spinning a little faster with the 3.00 gears and lucky it made two trips to Florida. It still might get a Y block sooner if I can find one that I can drop right in but I doubt I can find one.

I know but its not going to happen as quickly as I would like,I fired up the 55 and could not get it to make the noise again and wondering if the motor does not like the oil I put in it as it never done it before I changed the oil but it did have different gears too. Might put some 15w40 oil in it this weekend and see what happens as I dont want to have to change the motor untill the 292 is ready.

I fired it up last night and could not get it to make the noise so I am going to change the oil and see if it just did not like the oil I put in it,instead of 10w30 I will step it up to 15w40 Rotella T and drive it up to look at the motor and see how it does. I hope its something simple like that as I dont want to change the motor and then do it all over again in another year or so when the 292 gets built.

You probably ingested a Chevy. It's passed through and all is good.

It could be carboned up and will dribble some water down the carb when I change the oil.

I put some 15w40 diesel oil in it and cant duplicate the noise now so maybe the motor did not like the department store house brand 10w30 oil so when the weather is nice I will drive it more to see if the noise reappears,I do want to put another 351 back in it and will be next winter before I can start rebuilding the 292. I looked at a 1970 351-W yesterday that has 55,000 miles but will run into the same issues with the 70 302 I have in my 65 custom 500,those motors do not like todays regular grade gas and I got the 302 to run decent on regular with some carb jetting and timing adjustments but its on the edge of needing mid range or premium. There still is a noise in the 351 but sounds like it in the top end or front of the motor which gets me thinking I have a fuel pump on it for a 87 351 which came with a double roller timing chain and I doubt my motor has one and has the regular timing chain,it might be barely contacting the thingy it rides on so I will need to do some checking on the fuel pump applications.
