My car needs new tires and I'd prefer made in USA so I want to get an idea of which brands actually make the tires here in the USA.

If you don't mind, crawl under your cars and trucks and let me know the brand, model, and where the tires are manufactured.

On my truck:

BF Goodrich, Radial TA, Made in USA, all 4.

To cold and dark to look at the car now but it has:

Fulda, Quantum Elite

Hi Charlie,

Go to TireRack.com and type in a brand name and size tire to fit your vehicle. Then look for the link that says product info. It gives all the dimensions and the Country of origin you're looking for.

This might help you.

http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/manufacture/index.html

Look up the DOT ID code on the tire and that site will tell you exactly where it is made. Or put in a manufacturer and it will tell you where all the plants are.

I have Michelins (Made in USA) on my truck and the wifeys Mini-Box (Ford Windstar). Some Michelins are made off shore so look closely. My '89 T-Bird SC has Goodyear Eagles, made in Canada.

For the life of me I can't find where the 3" WWW's on my '55 are made.

Larry and Jim, those links are very helpful. I'm glad to see that US made tires are pretty common.

According to my local tire dealer, Coopers are US made also.

They most likely are. Following the link above, there is one plant in China, one in England, and Four in the US. Hopefully the tires for the US market come from the US plants.

Some manufacturers don't come up, BF Goodrich is one but most of them are US made according to the info at tirerack. Fulda, the brand which is currently on the car does not - I know it's a German company but that doesn't mean they're made in Germany, haven't looked yet.

Charlie, just make sure you get tires rated for 300mph if you ever plan to bring that truck to Bonneville or Loring AFB.

For you guys running Coopers, would you mind actually looking at them to see where they are made. I've been looking at various reviews and it seems that many of them come from China now. They're the only tires I can get locally that might have a good chance of being American made. But they are not at the stores so I can't ask them to look.

I checked my Fuldas this morning. They are made in USA!

I also got a call back from NTB. They proactively checked the tires they had in stock in the size I need and Yokohama is US made.

For what it's worth, I recently purchased a set of coopers for my wife escape and our local cooper tire dealer told me that most of the coopers were made in the US but there are a few that are made "out of country" he didn't say where and I didn't ask. Mine are from the good old USA. The dealer seems to know his business but one never knows.

I've decided to go with the Yokohama AS430. They're pricey but you tend to get what you pay for. And there's a special going on, buy 2, get 2 free so the price becomes pretty good. I've looked at reviews and people seem to like them a lot.

We purchased Uniroyals last year for my wifes Accord. Was surprised when I discouvered they were made in China. Said to the tire shop owner "you didn't tell me they were made there" He said he wasn't aware of it, but I could pass on them or bring them back if I didn't like them. They seem fine. (not a guaranty of other ones made there obviously) Also, bought this year, a set of Hankook Optima 727s for my daughter's Civic. I believe they are made in Japan or S. Korea. Would prefer a N. American tire, but Consumers report rated them 2nd in a field of 16 All Weather tires tested. Only a Michelin was better overall, and the Optima 727 tested better for a Northern climate then all the others..
