By paul2748 - 13 Years Ago
Unbolt it BigGrin

Do the flex plate bolts first.
By ALL AMERICAN RACER - 13 Years Ago
this tranny has screen on back of

bellhousing

looks like we got the racing version of transSmile
By MoonShadow - 13 Years Ago
Your sure its not just an air cooled version? Chuck
By Moz - 13 Years Ago
wow you mean to tell me theres a racing version of the ford o matic where do you get one
By ALL AMERICAN RACER - 13 Years Ago
that was a joke

does have a screen on back of

bellhousing right above transmission

probably to let heat rise up and out

from converter

think they figured out later

better to just keep dust out in there

around converter seal and trans front seal
By ALL AMERICAN RACER - 13 Years Ago
trans is off of engine

had to give up on taking

trannny off of bellhousing because

of bottom passenger side bolt inaccessible

still don't know what's going on there
By jonnireb - 13 Years Ago
Check n & see if the  bolt screws in from the front of belllhousing at the right(passenger) side.

johnny reb

trans to bellhousing bolts

are just regular

when unbolting bellhousing from engine

did run across 'last' bolt

bottom left ( sitting in driver's seat )

bolt has to be loosened through

access hole in bellhousing

CORRECTION: sure I had one last bolt to loosen

but there are TWO access holes on passenger

side of bellhousing to engine

took quick look and hole did line up with another bolt hole

think other bolt had fallen outSmile

Maybe not, but i just couldnt think that removing the  bell housing bolts/trans bolts could be complicated enough to require a question on it, unless he,s messing with us? More info on members backgrounds, age, etc can be a help in understanding situations.Smile Just a suggestion.

Strange one Bill

His other posts refer to more technical items such as manufacturing manifolds himself, and then he can't unbolt a transmission.

No punctuation in any posts either so it is difficult to read at times

gentlemen

it's a Cruiso-O-Matic not a Ford O Matic

By Y block Billy - 12 Years Ago
My thoughts ecxactly YaLincoln, Is the starter removed?
By Y block Billy - 12 Years Ago
The picture you sent the link of, is from 64-74 V8 and 65 up I6, Are you sure you have a Y block? Y's ended in 64. (in the states anyway)

drivetrain (engine & tranny) was pulled out of pickup truck.

i bought it still all bolted together and brought it home.

i DID unbolt tranny from bellhousing first.

why not? this thing weighs a ton.

bellhousing is cast iron.

tranny and tailshaft are cast iron.

i got to move this around to clean it.

yblock billy

starter came off with accessories.

carb, generator, dist, fuel pump and various lines.

that's my bellhousing in attachment in every detail.

screen on back, mounts, round access holes and odd shaped opening on drivers side.

yep. it's a y block.C1TE heads.

have a nice day!

Good way to screw up the torque converter and pump for two reasons "why not?".

I have never seen a cast iron tailshaft?  i,m guessing you,re a young guy and new to cars etc, it would help us help to understand you a little better if you didnt mind giving somebackground, thanksSmile

Now Your gona make me look, I have a Ford O Matic in storage that (I think) has a cast iron tailshaft. It's sitting next to an FMX with an alum tail shaft that is much shorter than the Ford O tail. One day they are going to be combined into an FMX O Matic for my 56 Fairlane.

Kev, you are mixing up tail shafts with g.box extension housings. the tail shaft connects the trans to the diff!!

By kevink1955 - 12 Years Ago
You guys are right, the Ford O Matic I have in storage does have an alum tail shaft, it's so covered in crud I had to use a magnet to verify it was not alum. It's also about 7 inches longer than the FMX standing next to it.

Bill, In the US the rear most part of the trans that accepts the slip yoke and speedo gear is commonly called the tailshaft housing, do you call it something different?

Kev, i was thinking that later, yes, if i remember rightly you call our "tail shaft", the "drive shaft" from what i see here. And you refer to the rear trans housing as the tailshaft? but was referred to as "tailshaft" and not tailshaft "housing" in 1st and 2nd replies, strange when the housing is not a shaft! but got the general idea.Smile

It's great no matter where we call home that the "Y" brings us all together and we manage to understand each other.

I bet that puting the timing gears on with the marks 12 pins apart on the drivers side could be a problem when you sit in the Right seat to driveSmile
