There is the standard size Ford filter, FL1A I think. Then there is one that has a case approx. half the length of the FL1A. What I need to know is the filter and its application, that is even shorter than the half size. I brought this up years ago on the old forum, but have forgotton what the shortie fit. Today I looked at a filter for Chrysler 2.2 L thinking it was the one, but not. My remote filter setup has leaked one too many drops, and short stuff would clear the steering box.

A Motorcraft FL300 is the short version of the FL1A.

MarkMontereyBay (7/16/2011) A Motorcraft FL300 is the short version of the FL1A.Mark, I tried the FL300 years ago, and it interferred with the steering box. There was/is another one a little shorter than it.

Mike,
That is the smallest one. GM made some oil filters so small I wondered why they even bothered. Looks like you need a remote oil filter kit. The "modern" Motorcraft oil filter is the FL820 but it is the same size or larger and I don't think it would fit the old cars anyway. Here is a possibility, Ford made a 90 degree oil filter adapter for FE engines. I have one on my 66F100. You might troll the local pick and pull. That part might fit a Y Block.

Mark, could you try putting a space after the link. Then if I cant click on it directly I can copy it. Never mind. I found the item. Will check the engine to see if there is any direction the filter can go. Down doesnt work because of the exhaust.

Mike, is your leak at the block? Maybe the oil filter plate is warped... I sure you know the drill of taking it off and wacking it with a hammer, in a controlled, precise manner, of coarse.

Yes it is at the block. I have reformed the plate in the past. It seems to dribble all around that area. Really tired of fartnig around with it. Did I read somewhere that John Mummert has a good strong, machined, cannister to spin-on adapter?

Hi Mike, Don't know if this will help but another filter that will work is the NAPA Gold #1085 for Chrysler applications. Approx. 3 5/8" tall. Good luck, Nick Brann - K.C., MO

I saw it on the net somewhere so I went and bought one. Mac's has a very sturdy adapter and they also have an extra thick gasket.

I tried the filter Nick mentioned today. It looked like an FL300. Didnt fit. Even tried gently beating it to size but no go . Put on the mini filter Paul mentioned. It is scarry, meant to fit a Lotus! The Speedway adapter with an FL300 angled about 45 degrees up and back may work. As I am sitting here looking out of the window, it is pouring rain! Very unusual for this time of year here!

The Speedway right angle adapter came in today. It is a genuine Ford part. However it didnt allow the fitting of even the half size filter. Couldnt go back because of the bell housing flange. The angle of the block wouldnt allow a vertical install. Forward interferred with steering box, down finds the oil pump pickup tube.

Yes, that is similar to what I have been using, but trying to replace. Put the bypass and remote back on and tightened everything as tight as possible.

Mike, Please bear with me as I am trying to learn more about the Y-block. Since the weak link seems to be the stamped adapter plate, is there enough meat in the cylinder block where the oil gallery exits to the filter to be tapped for pipe thread ? If you can tap the gallery port, then you can toss the plate and plumb the remote filter with AN fittings/hose or whatever you choose. I am further assuming that the stock adapter nipple can be threaded as well. I could sure be wrong but this would seem to be the ultimate solution. I expect the experts on this site will point out the reasons that this can't be done. I'm just daydreaming out loud.

If I remember correctly Purolator used to sell a filter that was about half the length of the PER-1 ( FL-1).
It was a Purolator PER-81. It was a Chrysler unit that had the same threads and drain back valve as the Ford unit.
It worked for me!
Good Luck!

This is the 2nd time over the years that I've made a good effort at getting rid of the bypass/remote, both unsuccessfully. Thanks guys for trying to help out. The right angle adapter will be going back to Speedway this week. Should someone need one, watch Speedway's Garage Sale. It will end up there.

Add the Wix 51085 oil filter to the group of shorter than stock engine oil filters. It’s 3.625” tall.
