You must be down under with that numbers stamping on the front of the block.

It looks like you're using a pair of mismatched heads. It's not a big deal, but you'll have to pull the threaded plug from the front of the head on the left in the picture, and you'll have to plug the rear hole on that same head.

Oggie does things a bit different, being upside down and all... besides I see Mummert's heads in his future.

Your right charlie they are both left hand but both ecg-d, i had to replace one, i've got all the stuff to rebuild them from john but i would love a set of his Alu heads.
Hey Dennis whats new?
cheers oggie

Oggie, Nothing new here. Where did you get those valve covers with the Ford Oval on them? Something a little different than what we see here.
|
By YRAG32 - 13 Years Ago
|
Dennis they are THOMAS covers with the name milled out and badges pinned in, a common practice here in the old days, Eddie Thomas was a drag racer, machine shop/ parts manufacturer and all round good egg hes well into his 80's and still has input in to the company. He made 3x2 intakes as well, our friend Maurice (good captain) used to work for him, cheers oggie

Nice work on the valley cover. It should keep it sealed. I have one of Mummert's covers and have thought of adding some fasteners to it for the same reason. Here is a photo from today of my 312 in progress.

Marv, I'm from Melbourne Aust thats a good eye you have. Mark thats a fine looking engine 3x2's and alu heads. Dennis can you tell me what your starter is again? After 3 times i might remember, sorry.

YRAG32 (6/23/2011) Dennis can you tell me what your starter is again? After 3 times i might remember, sorry.
Oggie, Are you asking about the Ford FE series (352, 390, etc.) starter I'm using with the Flat-o http://flat-o.com/carproducts/yblock.htmadapter for my C-4 or the mini-starter http://www.autoelec.com/ that I suggested to you to help for clearance for your steering box?
I don't believe the FE starter will bolt up to your bell housing? I think I remember you are using a 4 speed?
As for remembering, That's "Old Timers Disease"
Good hearing from you,

Is there a hi torque starter that bolts straight up to my genuine bell housing?
|
By The Master Cylinder - 13 Years Ago
|
Oggie, here's one... http://www.autoelec.com/html/y_block_ford_gear_reduction_st.html. Looks like it may be rotated to help with clearance. Anybody else have this starter.
Don't know what shipping would be to Australia, tho.
I'm assuming by Genuine Bell Housing your are referring to a Stock Ford Bell Housing.

I don't have one yet but ordered one for my Tbird a few minutes ago. I have similar starters on both my FE powered rides and they are great. They are "clockable" so you can rotate the mounting to allow for 8 different positions. The sound of the starter is much different, not like the older Ford unit but more like a the new Ford or Mopar. I asked about shipping to Australia and he said it is about 50 bucks. Says he has shipped to New Zealand and Australia frequently.

Oggie, remember to use anti-sieze on S/S bolts in aluminum as a preventative measure so it doesn't gall and damage the threads.

YRAG32 (7/24/2012) What are the best spark plugs for the Mummert heads?
I am running NGK BCPR6EIX-11 (this number I converted from the Champion number John listed with the heads info) along with MSD distributor, MSD box, Mummert heads and intake with fuel injection.
NGK's.... the higher the number the colder the plug.

Here are the Autolite numbers I use for 14mm, ¾” reach sparkplug applications. This includes the aluminum Mummert heads. For compression ratios from 9.0:1-11.0:1, Autolite 3924. For compression ratios from 11.0:1-13.5:1, Autolite 3923. For compression ratios from 13.5:1-15:1, Autolite 3922. On the Autolites, the higher the number, the hotter the plug. As a general rule, U.S. made spark plugs get hotter as the number increases while offshore or foreign sparkplugs have cooler operating ranges as the number increases.

First run on the Dyno today 241 hp and 272 f/lbs @5000 rpm, engine guy said it sounded sweet! But plugs in 1&5 and 3&7 are dirty (sooty) while plugs 2&6 and 4&8 are fine! I'm using a stock Ford 2X4 intake with 500 edelbrocks, any clues? He thinks it maybe bad mixing cause there' no plenum chambers under the carbs. Hes sure the hp will increase after this is solved.
cheers oggie.

Hes sure the hp will increase after this is solved. cheers oggie. On the Ford dual quad intake, 1, 3, 5, & 7 are the cylinders being supplied by the primary side of the forward facing carbs so I’m thinking this is a carb problem rather than an intake problem. And because it’s primary side related, then the metering rods not being pulled down into the primary jets comes to mind. The rods could be either stuck in the up position or there is inadequate vacuum to overcome the existing power valve springs to pull the rods down into the jets. Checking the manifold vacuum with a gauge may help in the troubleshooting. If the manifold vacuum is low, then using lighter tension power valve springs may be the ticket. Beyond this, it may be as simple as the primary jetting needing adjusting. A bit more information on the carbs might help. Are they new or used? If used, have the jets and/or metering rods been changed out previously?

Ted thanks for the quick reply, the carbs are new but i got them a few years ago, i'll relay your message to the engine builder, cheers oggie

This is No 5

Thanks for the engine picture. Looks good. I still think you have a problem with the front carb. Do the power valve pistons work freely up and down? I'm assuming at this point you've checked the base of the carb and the adapter itself for any vacuum leaks. If all else fails, then I would swap the carbs so the front one is on the rear. If the problem goes to cylinders 3 & 7, then you know it’s definitely the carb.
