Y-Guy Texas: I've often said "you can't say cheap and hobbie" in the same sentence, but my son, Reed & I are building a turbocharged 125cc & 175cc gas & fuel Bonneville bike, out of a Yamaha TTR 125. We hope to get it finished for this years event, so we can "Play" with Charlie & Todd. Bill

Mine is not far removed from cars. I like to design and build things which usually has something to do with mounting and/or actuating some device. I've done some work for tractors and vintage stationary engines. One time I had to recreate a lever only using pictures from several different angles and the remains. That was fun. Every problem is different and requires a different approach which I like because I get bored easily which is why, even though I enjoy working on my own stuff, I couldn't be a mechanic to make a living. Plus my attention to detail is too high and I'd never survive in a flat rate world, but mine would be the best stuff leaving the shop.

Y-Guy Glenn: Reed & I have always wanted to go to Bonneville but we had to take some type vehicle, and a motorcycle is much cheaper(lol) Jamie Hacking(Monster Kawasaki) says he will ride it(Reed builds turbo's for him) I plan on riding it in one class, IF I can lose about 20 lbs. We are just going for a good time and enjoy the "Happening". Bill

Guys for me thats a tough one. I've built kit radios, built and occasionaly flown RC and control line airplanes. Built all sorts of model boats, cars and planes. But I always come back to motorsports, and Hot Rods. My Y passion started just after High school with a 57 Ford convertible. Took a long break until I retired from the Army. During those days I was involved with just about any type of competitive motosport involving cars. I've been hill climbing, drag racing, dirt track racing, SCCA racing and probably some more I've forgotten. Most of the time I've been working in the Pits but occasionaly I was the one driving. Once I retired from the Army my 56 Vicky came my way and its been Y's ever since. I still like all sorts of motorsports but really seem focused on the Y. That is other than killing the "enemies" in computer games like Call of Duty or Crysis. Thats about it for me. Chuck in NH Oh yeah, and making new friends!

Doesn't seem like there would be time for anything else besides sewing and quilting for Corene and building race cars for me, but we do ride bicycle quite a bit. We average from 2-3,000 miles per year. After another serious crash a year ago, we changed to recumbent bicycles. Hers is a hotrod that I rebuilt from the ground up with a pink and black theme. Mine is a rat rod that is very functional, but very ugly with primer paint frame and torn seat cover. (Hey, a Mexican blanket seat cover would be cool!) I found them both in a pile at a yard sale.

I have half a dozen Morgan horses and as my knee replacement heals I'll be getting back in the saddle and trying to improve my pathetic roping skills. Used to handload and loved to varmint hunt using 22-250, 243, 220 Swift, and 22 Hornet. It's hard to find a good place to go now but if I ever figure out a way to get those blankety blank moles to stick their heads up out of the ground I'll be dusting off a couple of old Ruger number ones. Mike........If you get lucky and see one of those pesky moles working,a full magazine of hollow-points from a 45 works good on them. You don't even have to wait for him to stick his head up out of the ground.

I may add that along with the Y-Block powered vehicles and th airplanes (models and full size) I have been a fan of British sports cars since I was 15 years old. I have had several including the three pictured (I don't know if you can call a Herald a sports car but they did build the Spitfire on a Herald chassis) the MGB GT I bought when I was 16 and has stayed with me the longest.

It's striking how so many of us have toyed with the same types of hobbies and projects. Each settling on their own specialty. I even lusted after a MG and a Super Swallow 100 (became Jaguar) while in England. I guess with my travels In the Army I settled on beer drinking and tourism for those years. I did, however, keep up with the car passion and always had a "performance" car around. When I could afford it I went to a lot of different style races including a Grand Prix in Germany. My kids are all growed up and have their own families now so I get to deal with grandkids now. The 24 and 19 year old boys are local but neither is into cars. I have an 11 year old grandaughter and am waiting to see! I normally play games in singleplayer mode, offline. I'm far too slow to go at it with the kids. Chuck in NH

Paul Never considered a handgun but late one night many years ago a good friend who had access to dynamite suggested we could "hunt" them with quarter sticks come daylight. However when the sun came up it didn't seem like near as good an idea as it had in the middle of the night when copious quantities of alcohol had been involved. One of the keys to becoming old and wise is to be able to live through the young and dumb years. Mike

Tim, I dreamed of an MGB GT when I was about 16!! even wrote off for some sales literature inquiring about metric fasteners... being from a "country boy" background, I just wasn't sure about a car that had metric nuts and bolts. never got an MG; had to be satisfied with used American cars thru HS and college. Bought my first "new" car in 1980... a Honda Acord... cause it looked like a BMW! yes, I've repented since then, getting rid of anything but American iron... ... will throw up some pics of my tube amps soon as jr gets home from school and shows me how! MarkShould have got yourself one, MGs and Triumphs don't use metric fasteners. Although the early ones use Whitworth which needs a whole different set of tools.

The past 3 months, I have had about zero time for any kind of hobby, not even the Y block... However, the family and I really enjoy the outdoors. Outdoor anything, really. This past week was our first excursion in a canoe and raft down the South Branch river, tributary of the Potomac, about 7 miles. My wife, April, 13 and 11 year old daughters Kayla and Leah, and my 8 year old "bassmaster" EJ. We put 3 or 4 of us at a time in the canoe, and we let one or two of them float down the river in the raft. The last 3 images are almost like those crazy "item in a picture" search games. My son EJ actually caught a smallmouth and it blends in well with the rocks on the riverbank. That is a real, live Bald Eagle in the two "tree" photos. We about floated right underneath of him/her. The kids loved that. This part of the South Branch River is very remote...no people, no houses, just about nothing buT you and God's creation. The part we were on is called The Trough and was named by George Washington years ago back when all of this was in Virginia. The river got its name because the water flows very quickly (and narrow, too) between two very steep and high mountain sides. So steep there is only a railroad track through one of the banks, no roads unless you cross the mountains. Mama got a little worried out there, especially when the canoe got sideways, we got stuck over rocks in rapids, the tow rope got tangled, the water snake that was heading right for her when she was out of the canoe, the new raft sprung a bad leak, etc, etc, etc, BUT we never tipped over one time, and the kids caught quite a few fish. The kids and I loved it. Mama, not so much, she is too much of a city girl, but she appreciated the time well spent with family. If I had more time, we would do much more of this type of thing. My kids would rather be doing this than being in front of a tv or computer screen.

Farming. I live on the 50 acre farm I grew up on. When my Dad passed away, Mom didn't want to stay here, so I bought it from her. With all the rain here this spring, the crops aren't in the ground yet. Had one field almost ready yesterday, and it rained again. Luckily, I don't have to depend on the farm income to make ends meet.

John, just the oppsite down here, crops are drying up in the fields, we need rain bad. Even with all the storms, it has been a very dry spring and hot, supposed to be around 100 degrees again today with no rain in sight.

Sorry you aren't getting the rain Glenn, same old story, plenty of water just not in the right places. We have had a very wet year after ten years of drought, it rained all day yeasterday while working on the uni, it's June, should be 100 out here by now. Not complaining, just saying.
