There are some 312 rods on ebay right now, but after you rebuild them it might be easer and cheeper to buy a set from Mummert, there ready to go.

glrbird (5/17/2011) There are some 312 rods on ebay right now, but after you rebuild them it might be easer and cheeper to buy a set from Mummert, there ready to go.Agreed! I come up with approx. $265 to buy the used rods at $75, and rebuild. Then you get the added negative of piston(s) being at different levels relative to deck, and an overall loss in the dimension of piston top to deck. Very few shops can or will guarantee equal rod center to center dimensions after rebuild. And even then they cant perform miracles on an unmatched set of rods. Rebuilding a used set of 312 rods is a waste of money IMO, and using an unrebuilt set in new engine is .

Mike: Don't know, but this is the first time I've heard that a set of 312 Rods normally vary that much on dimensions? As for the deck height issue, from what I've seen in print on that problem, it usually occurs largely due to uneven deck heights. Yes, no?

Mike, I'd really consider John's 312 rods at $325 only another $50. New, unfatigued and same length. Can't go wrong with a solid bottom end cheers Warren

It is a combination of all of the above, uneven deck heights, machining tolerances in the crankshaft, rods, pistons, block, etc. With all those variances, there is the potential that an assembly composed of randomly selected parts can be in or out of the hole farther than any of the others. This is where taking the time to measure, and machine where necessary really pays off. It's also why a blueprinted engine costs so much more.

I appreciate everyones concerns and opinions as to what I should buy and how I should build my motor but all I am looking for are a couple of parts. You can all rest assured that my motor is being built by a very competent Y Block machinist that you all now and love. With thay being said........I am still looking for a crank. Thanks !

Since the 312 cranks are getting so scarce, can't the 292 cranks be offset ground to 312? 312 cranks would be a good market for one of those aftermarket crank makers.

Forgot to add the C1TE rods are 312 length so theres another option, but they may be even scacer.

Yes a 292 crank can be offset ground too 312 stroke, but will require aftermarket small journal rods and of course must be used in a 292 block. Not a bad deal though 292 bored .050 and offset ground crank in a later block and you have a better 312 than the one that Ford built.

Guys, a 292 crank, stock or offset ground, won't work in a 312 block. Mains are to small...
