My name is Keith Cornell,I currently making my 32 3 window coupe SCTA legal,so I can run Bonneville this summer.I have run the Maxton Mile with best speed of 137,(with a 135 speed limit) due to lack of saftey equipment. The motor is a 321 stroker from John Mummert, along with G heads ported by John. Ted is building me a 500HP+ monster as I write this, which will be topped off with Mummert ported aluminum heads. So if any one out there makes it to the salt this august, look me up.

Keith, good to see you here, welcome. You'll have a tough hill to climb at Bonneville because of the class you're in but even if you don't set a record I'll bet your car will be faster than any Y-Block in a long, long time.

Outstanding Keith. It will be a miracle if all three of us are ready by Bonneville, but if we are, we should definitely pit together. Let's stay in touch. Pictures would be nice. Charlie

John, I dont plan on any record but You may be right about the fast thing. Charlie,I will look for your new project,I met Tim last year in the "Brick", as he was staged near us on the 3rd/ special course. Im also on a team that runs a XFGR (32 Ford). When I saw the Brick,I knew I had to check out the Y Block.Thats a great looking truck. I was afraid someone was going to ask for pictures,I still need to "learn" how to add them,I should probably ask my 10 year old!!!!!!!!! Keith

Well alot of time has passed since I started this post. My car is ready for the salt, just need to pass tech when we get there! Ted has finished my engine,& has posted a dyno sheet in the aftermarket heads section. As you can see this should be a monster in a 32 Ford 3 window coupe. Leaving the northeast corner of NY on the 6th bright & early, meeting up with Ted in Chyenne Whyoming on the 9th,& will pull on to the flats first day of tech, the 11th. Hope to meet,Charlie Burns,& talk with Tim again. Keith Cornell

Final speed was 175.539 mph after four gear changes and a roll of duct tape. Here’s a picture of the car starting off on one of its runs.
|
By 57FordPU - 13 Years Ago
|
Ted, was getting fresh air to the engine the breakthrough answer?
|
By glrbird - 13 Years Ago
|
175 in a 3 window coupe, that must be an outstanding ride. Can you tell us what you taped up to help the speed?
|
By Ted - 13 Years Ago
|
In an attempt to get more air to the carb, Keith fully opened up the grill and that slowed the car down significantly. Went the other direction and completely sealed off the grill and went 173+ mph. After that, duct tape went over all the hood seams and some of the suspension parts to get some better aerodynamics. Here’s a picture of the Rolling Bones skull on the grill that also got the tape treatment. Keith has some ideas on getting fresh air to the carb but that comes later as there will be some fabrication involved. Prior to Keith running the 175mph number, three other drivers (including myself) did run the car down the course for licensing. I can say with authority that the car is rock steady at 158 mph as that’s where I held it for two miles at a steady state speed. Thank you Keith for giving me the opportunity to drive. It’s a blast.

Wow what a trip!!! Just got home today about 3 pm (8/22),unloaded the coupe & of course had to start it up & blast it down the road before parking it in the shop. I think we made some believers in the Y block,@ Bonneville.I have to say thanks again to Ted Eaton for the 343 Y, that most people thought was a BBC,under the hood. Also to John Mummert for the dedication, time & expense it took to develope the heads,& intake. Tim it was good to see you again,Nice meeting you Charlie, good luck to both of you with your trucks. I am hoping that Loring has more events,I know there is one in Sept, but after being gone for 16 days, its not possible for me to get up there. Thanks to all for the nice words. Keith

To answer some questions, changes to the car to improve aerodynamics are, track nose, got rid of the louvers in the hood & roof, added moon disc's all the way around & on the inside of the front, narrowed the rear a total of 6" to get the rear tires out of the wind. Also bringing the windshield & side lexan flush to the outer panels,& if time permits a full belly pan. Now I will see if I remember how I added photos yesterday!!!!! Oh yea plans were to paint the car & make it real slippery, well I got the doors done............

Keith Great looking car and we already know it will go fast.
I was reminded of something about recip water cooled aircraft by the pic of the radiator in the back of the car. A few minutes on google came up with the "Meredith effect". Basically planes like Spitfires and Mustangs used the heat from the radiator to speed up the flow through the radiator and actually generate thrust. It was theorized that this could be further augmented by running the exhaust into the duct behind the rad. There have been a lot of sharp operators on the salt and so maybe this has been tried. And I don't have any idea of how it could be incorporated in your car.
Here is a homebuild aircraft thread on the subject
http://www.aviationkb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/homebuilt/1937/The-Meredith-Effect
Anyhow maybe something to think about for a Y powered streamliner.
|
By mctim64 - 12 Years Ago
|
Interesting stuff Doug! Although I've heard of this "effect" before I still liked this guys responce. "Hey Corky,
Forget about the engine, just add a large pipe to your mouth and jet that out the back of the aircraft. There's so much hot air coming out, you should break the sound barrier. The amount of thrust created by this affect will be negligible at best. Get out your thermodynamics book and see for yourself.
Stan Kapushinski" There's one on every forum.

Keith. Looks fast just sitting there. Is there a chance you’ll have access to the air/fuel sensors you used last year? I suspect there will be some serious jetting changes taking place this year with that forced air hitting the carb at 175+ 185+ mph.

You need MAP (Manifold air pressure) sensor for that.

I really like your car, it looks like it could have been time warped from the 50's. I know you have a quick change, but I was wondering what you are using for a trans now that the power and speed are getting up there.
|
By landspeedy - 12 Years Ago
|
Thanks Charlie. Trans is a close ratio muncie. Last year I was running gm t-5,& probably lucky it didnt grenade.
|
By 57FordPU - 12 Years Ago
|
I hear you about the t-5, I think the Muncie should do the trick. I have a Ford t-5, but it should be good for my speeds this year.
Another question is about your scatter shield. Are you using one of the Quick Time bells or are you using a 360* ring?
|
By landspeedy - 12 Years Ago
|
Charlie, I built a 360 degree shield out of 1/4" plate. A lot of work, but it passed tech.
|
By 57FordPU - 12 Years Ago
|
Thanks Keith, I too run a 1/4" thick ring. It used to be only 4 inches wide and tech said I needed more. I doubled the top 180* to 8" wide, Im sure it will pass, but if I get a new inspector, they seem to always say something about it until an experienced tech comes along. I wished there was an easy solution to all the problems I have encountered trying to use a Quick Time bell.
I will be eagerly awaiting news of your Bonneville results in August. Go fast and be safe.

Hope everything works out. There is a "formula" for an air intake mostly for injectors. Many factors. Flat plate, certain sized air horn off the plate a certain length, and a back space area. It's to make pressurised "dead air". Got the formula some where in my stash of info for the 12 Port GMC I built. In my LSR class the part infront of the leading edge of the car may not taper on the outside and not excede 48 sq. in. Anyway the car looks great and I hope you meet your goals..............JD

Kieth, I'll pass on a tip from my experience with positive induction from motorcycles. I'm sure you already and factored this in. Positive induction requires that fuel bowls, fuel pumps and any form of vacuume reference on ignition systems needs to be referenced other wise you will run lean or run out of fuel. The same as blow through supercharging. Even though I was only changing carbs on my bike (the motorcycle was already running positive induction) the fuel bowls needed to be conected to the air box, the fuel tank was referenced to the air box and sealed. The ignition system was shared with a turbo fiat which I'm sure presure retards the ignition. Fuel for though and good luck. Warren

MoonShadow (8/20/2012) For those of us that are uninformed on the salt what does qualified for the long coarse mean exactly? I normally don't go to Speed Week anymore only to World Finals so I did not get to see your car and engine. Your engine photos show large breathers on the left rocker cover so I'm going to make an assumption here that you did not run a vacuum pump on your engine. I use wet sumps on my GMC's and I could not believe the difference with the addition of one those pumps. I have a gauge now it reads between 7 and 9 inches and it gave me a few extra miles per hour for not much effort. I made my own from a GM smog pump and ran it for many years before going to a manufactured one. One additional thing that also added a higher speed was the addition of y-type merge headers. That was the biggest step for horsepower I ever made.
I believe you could get into the mid 190's or higher with those additions. Here's one more that might help now that it appears you will have some shiney paint. A friend of mine had qualifed his streamliner by 1/2 mile per hour and asked what he thought he should do for the return run. I told him to wax the car. He came back 3 over the record and got a "red hat"....when I want to go fast my cars are as slippery as I can make them......Good Luck J.D.

Can or should you make some sort of fairing for the shocks and axle?
|
By MoonShadow - 11 Years Ago

I've often wondered about a V shaped fairing on the axle instead of the lightening holes. Anything to change a surface from flat to tapered would seem to help. Also anybody ever done any work with covers on the inside of the wheels? Thats another area to disturb the air flow. Moon discs on the outside are nearly standard but why not on the inside? Could be as simple as an aluminum disc attached to the spindles or axle flange. Just dreaming out loud. Chuck

MoonShadow (5/7/2013) I've often wondered about a V shaped fairing on the axle instead of the lightening holes. Chuck
Chuck,I do have aluminum disc's on the inside of my front wheels.
Every little bit helps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks better all the time! Are you using a stock type windshield or lexan? I think I saw something a long time ago about mounting a lexan windshield as a glue in so it could be raised even with the top of the windshield relief. Potential air pocket at speed? Chuck

Chuck,
The windshield is lexan,& it is out flush with the body/reveals,so no pocket.
Hope to have it back together over the next couple weeks.
More pics to come..........

Gary,
I'm close, but no promises. I just like going to Bonneville to see all the hard work and ingenuity by others like Keith, it is such an inspiration.

Well, got back home on the 18th.
Monday the 19th the work began. Tear down & clean up,of 2 race cars,& 2 trucks with trailers.
Ted has already posted, but my top speed was 188.563.
We really wanted to get in the 190's,but will have to wait for next year.
All in all I am real happy with the way the car handled at that speed, and like everyone we are looking for more.
So with that said the engine will be on its way to Texas for a tune up.
Good luck for those of you going to Columbus,I would like to get there one of these days,(just to watch).

1st year of racing at Bonneville 2011 ran 175.539 (fastest run)
Sent the engine back to Ted.
2nd year 2012 ran 183.572.
Sent the engine back to Ted.
3rd year 2013 188.562.
Engine is on it's way.
Boy, I cant wait for next year.
We run from west to east. 15 mph partial headwind didn't help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
