Hey everyone.  I have a 1962 F100 4X4 that we have recently given a major makeover.  Has a 292 y-block that we bored .080 over and installed a 3.47 stroker kit with Probe domed pistons, Scat h-beam rods and 57 312 y-block ported heads.  Mummert 4-barrel intake and a Commander 950 Holley throttle body fuel injection.  Engine is fully balanced and block is zero decked.  Heads have been shaved to get maximum compresion estimated at 11.5:1.  (aproximately).  Running headers with glass pack exhaust.  We coupled this engine with a E4OD trans from a 96 F150 along with the 1356 t-case that was behind it.  Have a full MSD ignition.  This is the first y-block i have built.  I have a few road bumps along the way but the experience has been great and the engine is a monster.  It is my second 62 F100 4X4 and they are the sweetest pickups.  I would love to share more on my issues that I had or am still working on if anyone is interested.

Do you have experience with any other throttle body injection systems?

Are you able to run on pump gas with that compression ratio?

I can run 91 octane without any enthonal.  Have timing at 14 degrees idle and 38 wot.  We are looking into running E-85.  We are checking if all we have to do is add fuel and timing for that to work.  Our biggest problem is getting one of the head gaskets to seal.  I found out why though.  One of my heads already has the extra casting in it and the other doesn't.  So I am going to post the head and see what happens.  I had trouble getting the carb tuned (which could have been related to the -20 degree winter weather we have been dealing with all winter).  Now we installed the tbi and works awesome.  I have tune GM throttle bodies also.  Not easy you need software and have to solder in new chip port into factory computer.

Installing the E4OD trans was not that difficult.  We bought an adapter kit that came with the plate, gear reduction starter, flywheel, flywheel spacer and all the bolts.  I overhauled the trans to diesel specs and installed a ford lightning with a 2600 rpm stall.  We kept the 1356 transfer case that was behind it.  Had the driveshafts rebuilt with the correct flanges and built the two motor mounts the side of the adapter plate.  We kept the front mount on the engine.  Built a crossmember for the back of the trans.  You can buy a stand alone transmission shift control module.  All you need is a laptop to tune trans.  Same with the tbi system.  Holley also has good tech support.

I also have a 150 shot of NOS that I have not tried yet.  I am gonna wait until I all the kinks worked out first.

Cool. I'm somewhat familiar with GM tbi systems. I have an '88 Firebird with a tbi 305. I have not yet got into tuning but I do have the software for logging data. It's very useful for diagnosing problems. People always talk so bad about tbi but I have yet to hear of a carb that allows me to burn rubber, provide such smooth acceleration, and get 30+ mpg on the highway with such a large engine, by today's standards. Tbi is hands down far superior to a carb.

Keep me (us) posted on the commander. I haven't had much luck with Holley electric pumps so I'm leery of trusting an entire electronic system from them, particularly for a daily driver.

Man, you really jumped into Yblocks the right way! I am interested to see how well the about EAOD. Personally I think it's a great choice.

That IS a buncha compression.

The E4OD is great.  I overhauled it with planetaries and clutch stack ups to the diesel specs.  Installed a transgo shift kit with pump ugrades also.  Used 4R100 output shaft with 4R100 extension housing so I could use the output shaft speed sensor for my vehicle speed signal for the trans computer.  With the right upgrades you can get those trans working great.

Here is some of the new rotating assembly:

We started with a 650 Holley carb, but got a good deal on the TBI fuel injection...

My new custom built cooling system.

Cooled by dual electric fans.

Exact specs and braktes to bolt right in.

You can see the green beast in the background with the wheels behind it.

My fuel injection.

This is what happens when you forget to tighten a rod bolt down.  You can see were the piston was hitting the cylinder head.  You can see the outline of the combustion chamber.  It makes for a good picture but not good for the pocket book.  Always triple check torque on all bolts when assembling and engine.

That is a lot of motor for a 4X4 street truck, you should be able to go anywhere you want to with that! Great project, nice to see people without gray hair getting involved in the revolution. The Y-block culture needs the youth movement (under 40) LOL.

Good looking engine and great looking truck.

You have a great engine/truck combination, very impressed!

I'm very impressed and interested that you can run that much compression on pump gas. All our gas around here has about 10% ethanol. Do you think you could  run that much compression with 93 octane with 10% ethanol or does the introduction of the ethanol just totally screw things up?

If you start experimenting with corn squeezings (E-85) let us know how that goes.  Would be most interested in hearing about that.

Good Luck

Hey everyone still working on the old ford.  Had to disassemble my engine.  After that rod bolt came loose we just temporarily fixed it by sliding in a new bearing.  I took it apart and sent the crank in and found out it is cracked.  So I called John Mummert and found out that the crank I took out of my motor is a steel crank.  So I sent that in to get stroked and balanced.  Not all is bad because in the mean time I am going to stuff a bigger cam in it.  I wasn't happy that it "idled good" with the other cam.  So the one I am getting is a little higher rpm cam with a lopey idle.  Can't wait to here it.  3000 - 6000 rpm range, valve lift .448-.448, advance duration 286, 286.  .50 duration 250-250.  LC 108.  I am not extremely savvy with cam numbers so if anyone has any opinions on this cam I would love your input.  I will give up a little low end but I am alos dropping my gears down to 4.56.  That will help with the 33' tires.  I have also updated my fuel injection to a wide band O2 system which makes for much more accurate tuning.  I am hopeful that soon we will also be able to hit the NOS!!!!!  I have also now installed ARP heads studs instead of ARP head bolts for better clamping force.  I will keep everyone updated on the progress.  Just have ACL reconstructed in my knee yesterday so I will be down for a while.  Hope everyone is enjoying some spring cruising with there rods!!!

Robi-

Sorry to hear about ACL surgery.  Been there, done that didn't even get a Tee shirt and it really sucks!!!  Hope they saved your semi lunar cartilage  (the meniscus)  or in 40 or so years you may need a total knee replacement which I got 90 days ago, and it makes the ACL seem like a pony at a party.

Work hard at rehab and take care of it and although it'll take a while you'll get to where you can run on it, bend it and do most evrything you did on it before you tore it.

Good luck and keep us posted on that beast of yours.

Robi-

Amazing!  I can't imagine ever having the resources (time/skill/money/knowledge) to build an basic engine not to mention all the extra you're doing!  Thanks for all the pics, it makes the story/build that much more engaging to see some of the work.  Keep up the work and keep us posted, like the other amazing builders/projects on this site you give us newbies something to dream about for "some day".  I will dream about my grandpa's old 56 customerline 4-door having a crazy engine like yours under the hood and sneaking up on unsuspecting muscle cars (I'll have to avoid the lopy idle to stay ingognito!).

Love the 4x4 truck, keep the pictures coming!
