I have a chance to buy a nice 56 Ford F100 steering wheel and wanted to know if it would fit on my 54 column .

I think the 56 column shaft is shorter. It would be closer to your belly, but yes the splines will fit. Your 54 shaft is longer and the 56 wheel is deeper.

As it turns out the wheel is off a 54 Mainline and will be perfect.
