Edelbrock manifolds

Went to the Veterans Car Show in Loma Linda,Ca. today and stopped by the Edelbrock display trailer to rant on no Y-block parts--- there's Vic Jr. behind the display booth and he turns to me and says "not so sir" and proceeded to tell me that they have 2 aluminum manifolds in development at this moment--- a dual plane single 4 barrel and a improved version of their 573 tripower manifold but improvement over HP/TRQ due to newer casting techniques that will be available as a combo with their new Stromberg 97's and a progressive linkage setup! Asked about a new dual quad manifold or a new supercharger setup---his reply was--would be waiting to see if the new manifolds would be financially viable(sales) and consumer response for more new products(i.e. carb/manifold/cam combo--valve covers, etc.) Said he didn't know if they would be ready by SEMA SHOW but should be available by summer 2011 and a article on testing on their dyno mule in a automotive mag! So I'll believe it when I see it or I can sneak across the street to their foundry and get one of the employees to snap a couple of pics for me! Anyways there you go--anybody else have info on this? they'll probably use there old small port molds so that we don't outperform the sh?tboxes, HA!HA!

Last time it was spring '10. Now it's summer '11. Don't know if I can hold out that long. I wonder how the 4v manifold will work since they won't cast parts for their competition.

It's good that they're doing it.

By the way they are Ford/Holley 94 copies not "their new Stromberg 97's"
By John Mummert - 14 Years Ago
I talked to the head guy at the permanent mold foundry yesterday. He had not heard anything about a single 4bbl intake. They appearently threw away all their old patterns so they have to re-make any old stuff. None of their patterns from the 50's would work with their new equipment anyway. That's why they can't make our intake. Our stuff is too old school for their equipment.

As an aside I had my intake core boxes up there about 3 weeks ago and they wanted to take pictures of the manifold stuff. It sounded like they had no plans to make a single 4bbl but I declined, jokingly, to let them take pictures. Nobody laughed. Now I wonder if Vic was misunderstood or was just saying that. I would like to think they wouldn't take pictures and turn around and use some of the ideas.

The way they go about things it costs them a small fortune to make a new product so I think they have to believe there is a decent market for something before diving in. With 2 manifolds already on the market it seems questionable.

Triple manifold...
By kidcourier - 14 Years Ago
As you can see the ad states Spring of 2010 for 289/302 and 292/312 y-block ! Check their catalog and they already have a setup for the 289/302 combo--maybe spring of 2011 for the Y-block--think Vic Jr was just giving lip service?Maybe he'll see the EMC results for poorly Y-block and get some devine insperation. As far as the dualplane quad manifold-- look how many tripower manifolds were made by different companies in the day,it's all about supply and demand and they have their own foundry! I'm not going to hold my breath. I'd love to see it. But I won't believe it until I do. Sorry but Vic Jr. doesn't seem to care much about the Y.
By John Mummert - 14 Years Ago
For what its worth, on their 94 carbs they only plan to make primary versions. When I questioned that they claimed that they put a set on one of Vic's cars and he has been driving it around without problem. I don't know if they did any other mods to the carbs for 3-2 use.

YaLincoln, Didn't the small port also kick their butts???

Even if edelbrock did produce an intake I would still want a Mummert one, I would much rather support the guy who has done a tremendous amount of research and work for the Y than support someone who hates it but only sees dollar signs in his eyes.

By MoonShadow - 14 Years Ago
Ditto! John has done a lot for our hobby/passion and should be highly supported for his efforts. Those of us that don't have the technical skills can finally get bolt on/in performance packages that we can basicly "bolt on". Even the Ace rebuilders and Y-Block modifiers depend on John for parts and advice. Without people driving the R&D we would still be in the 60's for performance. Not in 2010 and beyond with 500+ horse Y-Blocks! My 2 cents. Chuck in NH

PS: Lets not forget all of the other Y's Guys that are also driving the development BUT when possible I'll get my parts from John Mummert! Thanks John.

I certainly hope everyone here feels the same way.Wink

I definitely feel that way. That's why I've bought a lot of stuff from him but I also really like the look of 3-2s and after the recent dyno tests, it looks like they are at the top for street performance, too. Because he's so busy and already has so much on his plate, I doubt we'll see a Mummert 3-2 manifold any time soon. I wonder if it will be worthwhile to convert one of his 4v manifolds.

Finding a good 573 wouldn't be supporting Vic Jr. however, if the new one turns out better than the 573, I'd rather get the new one.

Early next year, I'm going to have to decide if I'm going to go 3-2s or not.
By Riz - 13 Years Ago
I completely agree, for sheer performance it would be hard to beat the mummert from the posts I read, but I wanted to go pretty old school and wanted a 3-2.  I have ended up with the Offy (I know it has the worst peroformance-but it was brand new at a swap meet that was full of SBC types, so the price was one I could not walk away from ($150) And no one seems to want to part with the old Edelbrocks.  Guaranteed if Mr Mummert were to develop a 3-2 I would take it off in a heartbeat.
By John Mummert - 13 Years Ago
In talking to the Edelbrock guys it seems that they intend to produce a 553 and 573. I told the guy I regularly talk to that I thought that a new 553 would be a waste of time. If you're putting on 3-2's would you want the small port intake?

The only reason I can see to make an early version would be to get the throttle linkage mounting bosses on the back of the manifold for the guys with 54-56 cars that came with 2bbl carbs and Ford-o-matics. Its difficult to find a way to mount all the bellcrank and kick down linkage on the newer style manifolds.

Any input from you guys?

By charliemccraney - 13 Years Ago
I'm sure there will be some guys who want to use 3-2s on earlier engines and small port heads.

Is there a reason they don't have bosses for coil mounting?

i just got my aluminum valley cvr w/pcv hole from john and it is killer so i will def be buying my intake from him BigGrin
By Y block Billy - 13 Years Ago
If making the old style, I hope they modify it to accept the newer valley covers. I recently went to install my Edmunds on my "Rat Bed" and the rear tube vent was too tall for the manifold to sit down. I had to change valley covers to old style and will run a side breather, but maybe piped to the rear.

I would surely support John anyday over Vic, even though Vic foundry does makes the stuff. After reading Vic's comments in a book a while back, I don't think so.
By 56f100LongIsland - 13 Years Ago
I purchased and installed Johns Intake, effortlessly. Not only does it runs perfect, but the comments i get when I open the hood !! " What a cool Looking Intake!"
By John Mummert - 13 Years Ago
We finally got a few intake castings from the foundry. We will pull off of machining heads for 2 weeks or so and get some of these out to people. Glenn first! I wanna see that Falcon run.

Oh yeah, and Marv too.

By aussiebill - 13 Years Ago
John, are these are your 4bbl intakes you are referring too? thanks, regards bill.Smile

Thank's John, you are the man!!!

I have two blocks being stripped in preparation for a trip to the machine shop (finally).

One could probably be renamed a Mummert Y block because it'll have his heads, intake, hopefully his new cam and be stuffed with other Mummert goodies.  The other will be "old school" G heads, Holman- Moody (Holman Automotive) ground cam, 3x2s (Weiand intake) and still some Mummert innards.

Anybody would be a damn fool not to support John Mummert after his investment of time, blood, sweat, tears, and oh yeah..... MONEY!!!!!

       I'm just saying...............................

I've been tryin to support JM... got his T5 adaptor and some high-ratio rocker stuff... but it seems like all the other stuff I need is in high demand and short supply.

I sure would like one of those recent intake arrivals so I can match it up to the FPA headers that I got last month.

Keep me in mind John... pretty please  BigGrin

Bill: the intakes I was referring to are our own single 4bbl. We are part way through machining them. I had ordered 100 castings in Novemeber and received 35 so farw00t Welcome to the USA 2011!

Was at Edelbrock on Wednesday to pick up another 23 head castings. They are working seriously on the Y-Block 3-2 intake. I don't know how long it will take them to finish but it is on the front burner now.

Hmmm...dual quad?
