What a fantastic example of y block in a boat! Still got goose bumps from the ride!!!!!

Very cool!

Hi Royce,

Very cool boat. Did you notice that the engine was mounted flywheel forward and it did not have the typical marine timing chain cover? Does that mean that it has a V drive with the propeller shaft under the engine?  The engine seemed to be almost level in the hull.

Those guys were surely sitting up in the breeze!

Highway to the danger zone! What could possibly be more fun here in the land of the thousand lakes than a boat with Y-block? w00t Maybe a twin turbocharged Y-block in a boat Wink! Hmmm, after the dragster is done....
By MoonShadow - 14 Years Ago
So wild! Is that an old racer or a dream project? Sounds great. Now my list gets longer:

Y-block FED

Y-block rollback

Y-block boat

And the beat goes on. Chuck in NHw00t

YES!  that is very cool.  Me want one too! BigGrin

Doug, most of the marine engines I have worked on have the flywheel forward and run the planetary trans. with the "sun" gear attached to the snout of the crankshaft. Then direct drive strait back.

By mctim64 - 14 Years Ago
I just watched it again (the video) and in the slides at the end you can see the trans. under the dash, although there must be a u-joint in this set-up because you can see the shaft pointing down from the back case and the engine does seen to be level in the frame.

Here's the guys re-decking one and Rick if you read this it is a Chris Craft and it will run a 390 FE.

Nice boat and a good video except for that awful 'muzak'! Would much rather hear the engine!!!

Crackerbox is a racing class, they all are configured like this. Can you picture 10 or so of these

racing in a chopped up lake? Hold onto that wheel!!!w00t

Tim, Do you think the in/out box might have the output shaft angled down like a V drive? The whine sure sounds like spur gears rather than a planetary.

I am gonna email the guy and see if I can't get a copy of the vid without the annoying overdubbed music

You may be right.  I'd like to hear that thing without the music too.

Should we open up a section for Y-block powered boats? Cool

How about a generic section for all other Y-Blocks? Not just boats but pumps, generators, welders, tractors (?) and anything else other than cars and trucks that has a Y-Block! Chuck in NH

We used to have a Taylor Forklift at my old job that was made in Mississippi and was Yblock powered. It was made in 1964.

There you go Royce something for Lake DuBay this summer!!

Well, the boat owner is in the Milwaukee area so maybe I have a chance to at least get a ride.

Tim, which of those white haired dudes is you!
By danno - 14 Years Ago
Hi there.  I just joined and wanted to share with you folks my 1960 Buehler Turbocraft.  It' the first production jet boat in North America.  It has a 256 Y-block and a 3 stage Hamilton jet pump, srtaight 2 1/2" exhuast and it extremely fun.  I only have the photos of when I first acquired it.  It is in pieces right now getting all dolled up and I am having the seat cushions re-upholstered.  I have the deuce marine intake on it but can't get the YH carbs right so I'm going with a downdraft intake (I want to actually use the boat daily).  Does anyone have an opinion of how a Holley 600 will work on that engine?  I have the carburetor and have already fabricated the raw water plumbing.

Tim, which of those white haired dudes is you!

Neither!  I'm redish-grey haired dude behind the camera. BigGrin  That's Bill (the taller one) and Rick.  Rick by the way says he has a new in the box VS57 and would like to sell it if there are any offers, he bought it in I think 1966 for a project that never materialized.

By 57FordPU - 14 Years Ago
Dan, Welcome to the site.  I like the idea of the first jet boat being powered by a Y.  I know we have talked about your Holley 600 before, but perhaps someone here will have a better idea of the cfm requirements for a 256 in a marine application.

You might want to click on "EDIT///" above and to the far right of your post.  When the edit page comes up, put your cursor between the pictures and hit return.  Then the pictures will stack up and make everyone's text easier to read.  Then hit "Edit Post" at the bottom of that page to finalize the change.

Sure look forward to more pictures as this thing gets finished.  Did you say you were trying to finish by March?  Is there an event or show you are shooting for?

By aussiebill - 14 Years Ago
Charlie, i have had a customer for years that has and still does run a y block powered jet boat here,  he has spent most of his time playing and driving it over 30 years that i know of, and is as keen now as then!. It is only short, 12' long i think and flat bottomed for racing in the shallow courses. best regards bill.
By danno - 14 Years Ago
Charlie,

There's no show or event, just want to go boating and I'm using it as a service boat.  I have a mobile marine service here and am going to use it to do dock calls a few days a week.  It should get some good attention and it'll be much more fun than sitting in traffic.

This boat thing is getting out of hand somebody stop me

By pegleg - 14 Years Ago
Dano,

you may want to consider something smaller than the 600 on a 256. i think I'd go with a 390 or a 450 on a motor that small. OR build a 312!

Hi Dan

Just to get the facts straight.....The First Production Jet Boats in North America were built in 1959....In Canada....Dowty Turbocraft.....272 Ford Interceptor Y Block....In America....1959 Buehler Turbocraft.....292 Ford Interceptor

Check out my Turbocrafts and have fun on your boat once you get it done.....Enjoy

ROYCE, WHY WOULD I STOP YOU. I THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE A Y BLOCK BOAT, SO I CAN COME UP AND RIDE IN IT!! I HAVE A 368 LINCOLN WITH 2 FOURS AND A PAXTON SUPER CHARGER. JUST THINKING HOW BIG A BOAT I WOULD NEED TO KEEP THAT IRON MONSTER FROM SINKING. TOM

Hi Nick,

I saw your rooster tail video last summer and that sparked my interest as to the strange boats in my neighbor's yard (one of which I now own).  I didn't mean my boat was the first one in North America, just that Buehler (and Dowty) were the first production jets.  I was expecting to find a 272 or 292, but when I checked the numbers, it is a 256 from 1960 and the fuel tank is stenciled 1960.  I've seen only one other tail peice like mine in many months of searching and trying to indentify it and finally ran across a gentleman who worked at Indiand Gear Works on the marine production line and he told me that they had a company in Ohio cast this tailpeice and tested it and decided not to use it in production due to the vane bearings getting clogged with sand.  He seems to recall it as a test boat.  It's number is E 0074.  I love this thing and plan to use it all summer as our lake is now no longer drought stricken.  I'm new to these things and any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated (such as the whereabouts of a pair of Interceptor Marine exhaust manifolds and a gas cap).

Thanks,

Dan

And Frank,

Thanks for the response.  I'm going to try the 450 of the Holley marine flavor.

Nope.  Different Danno.

Howdy; I'm the new guy on the block and was advised by my son in law that he put

my crackerbox boat video on utube. I looked and sure nuff he did. This boat was built

in 1957-the engine was taken out of a totaled 57 bird with 1200 miles on the speedo but

was never installed in the boat. The builder was transferred to new job sites around the country.

The boat was kept in storage till he retired. He lost interest and sold it to me and I hauled it to

it's present home in Wisconsin and finished the install job on all the boxed up parts land launched

for the first in the fall of 2008. The engine was mounted level to the stringers, fly wheel forward

and the V-drive was changed to a Z-drive at a 11 deg. shaft angle. The strut was also a 11 deg.

and mounted to the keel and use as a bushing to bore the shaft hole. The rudder is outboard of

the transom. This boat is a real crowd pleasing item..I never found so many Y-block gear heads

ogle this boat motor before even at the T-Bird car club show..Thanks for the U-tube review.
