And the frontend

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
This started just as a cheap way to get into Y block racing, after looking all over the southeast for a 57 Custom that I could afford, I ran accross this thing on it's way to the crusher. I gave the guy $300 for it and later picked up a parts car for $150. Still wanted a 57 though and finally found one out in TX, but after dragging it home (you can just see it in one of the pictures) I realized that it was going to take a lot of body work. I ran accross a picture of a 67 Falcon that was raced in south TX in the late 60's with a SHOC and really liked the looks of it. So now I have put the 57 on hold and am really getting into this thing. Still going to be a fairly inexpensive race car but I am having a lot of fun trying to build it as if it were built in the 60's.

Welcome back Mike and thanks for the kind words. I think everyone on here should get into racing, it will keep you young. Just look at Chuck, old man but he still gets around pretty good. Although I did have to help Ted with loading his new blower motor into his van. Never knew you could get so much stuff, plus 3 men into a Dodge van. Just kidding Chuck, but I sure hope someone got a picture of that operation.
By Glen Henderson - 11 Years Ago
OK, loaded up and ready to roll! We are leaving around noon central time and driving to maybe central KY today and then drive on to the track Thursday. Driving 700+ miles in one day just don't appeal to me anymore. Hope everyone has a safe trip.
By Glen Henderson - 11 Years Ago
Don't worry, you want ever get old, it will always be anyone born before 3/19/47 (my birthday) and I don't plan on getting old, so anyone younger than me can't get old. Makes perfect sense to me! By the way we made it to Bowling Green, KY tonight. We should make it to Columbus by early afternoon.
By Glen Henderson - 11 Years Ago
.We made it to the 2nd round, lost to Bob Martin and his Merc. I went to sleep on the tree. My times were off by 2/10's from what we ran in Montgomery, but then everyone said they were slower. Still had a great time and looking forward to tomorrow.
By Glen Henderson - 11 Years Ago
We made it home just before noon today, hope everyone else makes it safe and sound. I had a close call Sunday at the track, after running my quickest (12.88 @ 106) time trial of the event, I parked in the pits waiting for first round. They called for Y blocks to staging lanes, as I was backing out of the pits, I heard a loud pop and the steering locked up. I shut down and pulled the hood. Wow the joint at the steering gear had broken and the shaft had hung up in the brake lines from the master cyl. The good Lord was looking after me, it would not have been pretty if it had happened at 106 mph.

We still had a great time and look forward to next year.
By Glen Henderson - 11 Years Ago
I though that I heard something weird going on with that old transporter when you pulled out of the pits Sat evening. Glad you got everything fixed and made it home safe and sound.
By Glen Henderson - 11 Years Ago
Picked up a new one at NAPA yesterday, so everything is good to go again. The old one was most likely the original 1963 Merc part and I should have known better than use it. After the two races in Oct, I think I will replace it with a steel u joint just to be on the safe side.

No Ted, not a Y this time, he is going with a sbf.
By Glen Henderson - 11 Years Ago
I went down to the newly reopened Atmore Dragway for t&t this afternoon. I only got to make a couple of passes, still have not cracked into the sevens, but oh so close. First run was 8.09 with a .13 rt,2nd was 8.05 with a .55 rt. The track is a brand new concrete surface and is still pretty slick but is smooth as glass. When it gets a little rubber on it is going to be a super fast 1/8 mile track. For those not familiar with the track, it is about 50 miles north of Mobile just off I 65. I have a couple of videos on my wife's facebook page if I can figure out how to post a link.
By Glen Henderson - 11 Years Ago
Thanks John, I know the car will run 7.80, I'm just slipping up on it. I made a tire change before going to Atmore just to see if a shorter tire would help. We will make a chassis adjustment before we go back. I am still footbraking and running the 6000 chip with a 5000 rpm shift point. The way I figure it when I get all I can out of this setup, I'll start with the trans brake and bump the rpm's up to 6200. Ted assures me that it will take it. I just have to get where I can cut a consistant light for now.
By Glen Henderson - 11 Years Ago
Ok,finally got to make a few 1/4 mile passes tonight. Best time was a 12.756 with a .054 R/T. 1/8th mile was 8.09 which is right on what I have been running at the 1/8th mile tracks. I am still footbraking so I fill sure it will run quicker if I ever decide to use the transbrake. See ya'll in Columbus next week!
By Glen Henderson - 11 Years Ago
Thanks Charles and Tim, really looking forward to seeing everyone again. The racing is just a added bonus, the real fun is meeting new people and talking to old friends.
By Glen Henderson - 11 Years Ago
Anyone born before 3/19/47!
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
OK, we finally made it to the track today for a couple easy runs!

Footbrake launch at about 2000 rpm and running a 6000 chip, best 1/8 time was 8.34 @ 82 mph. I ran it through the 1/4 one time, but let off early, 13.27 @ 98 mph. Short shifted on this run, not really paying much attention to anything but keeping it going strate. Best RT was .146 with a 1.91 60' time. The brakes were a little spongie so I was letting off early and did not try a launch off the trans brake. Just trying to get the fill of a track for the first time in over 40 years. The car drove good after upping the rear pressure up to 16lbs, first runs were at 10 lbs and it was a little dartie on the top end. All and all, well pleased for first outting, I think mid 7's are doable.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Thanks John, but Frank can drive his on the street and fill it up at the gas station. I could have probable made a couple more runs, but I spent too much time showing off the car and engine. It gathered a crowd and I had to explan over and over what the engine was, where the parts came from and who Ted Eaton is. A few old timers where there that knew about Y blocks, but said they had never seen one that looked like or sounded like this one. I can't wait until the 23rd of this month when we take it to Panama City for the ODRR show.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Just got back from the ODRR show in Panama City, had a great time and the Falcon and Y Block was a huge hit! I can't began to tell all the comments that we got, but I can tell you that we were parked between a 39 Ford coupe with a blown hemi and a 56 Tbird with a 406 tri power. We had at least twice as many people looking at the Y block and coming back to the tent to make positive comments or just to ask questions. I found out that alot of people have heard of Ted Eaton and the Y block because of his EMC efforts. I have a lot of pics and I will post some of them under the ODRR thread as I have time. Be forewarned that I had the only Y block there and some of the pics will be of "Scrubs", but they will be of cool old cars, some of them I remember as a teenager.

Pictures

For more keep checking the ODRR thread.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Chuck I was very surprised, not only the old Ford guys were checking it out and telling me their Y block stories but the younger crowd (even some of the scrub guys) were wanting to know more about it. I had a stack of Y Block magizines out with the car and they got well used. I think Bruce will be getting a few new subscribers. I have quite a few leads that I have to check out on engines, parts and cars. If anything turns out to be interesting and I don't want it, I pass it along. How about a old Bob Glidden pinto body or maybe a yard full of early 60's fords somewhere in west TX or a 57 merc with a 312 near ATL GA..
By Glen Henderson - 11 Years Ago
I am bumping my thread to the top for a guy on another site that is bulding a 66 falcon.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Thanks guys, I'll pass your thoughts along to Betty's son and grandchildren. She was only 65 and had been fighting this for over 5 yrs. By the way she was a retired SFC with over 30 yrs service in the AL Army National Guard. I recruited her into the guard in 1975 as a computer operator. In those days the computers were the size of a small truck. The system that we used was housed in 4 expandable semi trailers and required a 100 KW gen to power the system. How times have changed, now you could put everything on a couple of PC"s.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
OK, so I finally got around to hauling the Falcon to the scales this morning.

I had hoped that it would come in under 2800, but it didn't quite make it, 2870. I juess that means I'll have to go on a serious diet myself. Wrong, it'll just have to be 3075 with me in it. Next up, pull the engine and trans back out to stop a pesky front pump leak. I'm thinking now that I may have to replace the pump. I still need some rear wheels, I'm going to post a WTB in classifieds, so check it out and see if you can help me out.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Not the hand lettering that I wanted, but it will do for now.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
The wife wants to add a couple of hidden external speakers and a cd player so we can crank it up prior to cranking it up! Did not realize he was still around Frank.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
That is a cool site Tim, thanks for posting it. I love the old tunes from the 50's/60's.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Bill thanks to you and Reed for the offer, but my surgery is schduled for 31 Aug. Believe me, no one is more disappointed than I am about this, but I fill that it is something that I need to take care of ASAP. On a side note, the car is cleaned up and ready to go, looks like we will make the ODDR show and drags, 23/24 Sep in Panama City, FL. I received the offical confirmation last week. We will be in parking spot 42 at the show, 120 pre 1972 drag cars, should be quite a show and it is free admission to the public. You and Reed need to drive down to the beach that weekend.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Getting close to lighting the fuse. Waiting on driveshaft and trying to make the shifter work, think i'm going to have to order a shorter cable.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
OK, I fired her off this afternoon, had babies crying and old ladies cussing in the neighborhood! This thing sounds awesome through the fenderwell headers, I have a vidio from Ted's on the dyno, but that was through mufflers and ever though it sounds good, it just ain't the same as open exhaust. Unfortunately I have too pull it back out, dang front pump leaking. I put a new seal in it, but I'm thinking that I must have nicked it when I was pulling the converter so many times trying to get the spacers worked out. More later
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
That is a story of it's own. The pics and vidio from Ted are on a disk, the disk drive has died in my machine. I gave the disk to my son to copy to a tumb drive, he has not returned it yet. When I get it back, I'll post some of the engine build pic's but I don't know how to post a vidio. I may have to snail mail it to Charlie or Tim and let them post it. If you ain't figured it out yet, I am dumb as dirt when it comes to computers.

By the way James, congrad's on that great find you told me about yesterday.

On a side note, the HRM Power Tour stopped in Montgomery yesterday. My buddy and I went up and stomped around for a couple of hours. Alot of late model stuff, a few rat rods, several classic mustangs, and two super nice 57 fords, a couple of baby birds, and a 55 crown vic. All had later engines but thank goodness they were ford engines, not scrubs.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
That is the same setup that I have.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
OK, I got my Y Block mag today and it was suggested by Bill and Bob Martin that it was time for a update. I have plans of an artical for the mag if I ever get around to it.

I have driven the car around the yard a few times and today even got it out on a back street. I ran into a problem with getting the driveshaft cut. The guy that does it at the local driveline shop had heart surgery and was out of work for awhile. I got the shaft back last week. Next was sorting out the wiring for the elec water pump and fan and getting the line loc plumbed and wired. Still not satisfied with the brakes, I may have to install a brake bias valve to get  enough front brake in it. Still have to wire in the trans brake. I ordered the seat belts and a new helmet today, should be in Sat. Just finishing up a few small details, but they all seem to cost money. I had planned on loading it up and taking it to the local scales and weighing it tomorrow, but I have a good friend in the hospital that I need to go see, so I will most likely do that next week.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Thanks Tim, sadly my friend (actually my ex sister in law) pasted last night. We were as close as if we had been blood related even after all these years. She will be missed, but tonight she is pain free and in a much better place. Cancer is such an evil thing, maybe someday a cure will be found.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Tim, the water pump is one of Ted's creations sn#002. I am sure that he can fix you up.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Guys forget about the numbers that the EMC engine made. It is apart now and getting some new internals and based on what I saw, the dyno sheet on it is going to blow your mind! This thing should set a new mark for unblown HP!  If your checkbook is thick enough, Ted has some amazing parts available. I'm talking rods and pistons that look like a piece of art, crankshafts, dampers, and the new waterpumps. If I were close enough, I would sweep floors for no pay just to watch all that is going on there.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
This is the C4 that I built for the Falcon

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
I posted the pic's first because I was afraid I would get timed out. A few points about the Flat o matic adapter, the flex plate needs to be balanced, Ted checked mine and it was out of balance. The kit comes with some stud adapters that are used with a stock dia converter, but since I am running a 10" 3500 stall, I had to come up with a way to adapt it. Thus the alum spacers that sandwich the converter to the flexplate. If anyone is ever in a simular situation, let me know. I had to pay for a cad program to cut the plates on a waterjet, but the shop that I used has them on file now so the next batch should be cheaper.

The trans is a combination of TCI and BME hard parts. The valve body is a full manual rev pattern with transbrake. It should get the Falcon off the line pretty well.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Getting there!

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Just an old 1961 292 truck motor or that's what the local scrub boys will know!
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Sort of reminds you of Dolly Pardon don't it?
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Not alky Frank, but it sure ain't running on pump gas. When Ted told me what the C/R was I started looking at what it will take too install a tractor battery. We will give full details after the dyno runs. I am like a kid waiting on Christmas!
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
No problem Bill, using good ARP head bolts, they should hold the heads in place. Now head gaskets might be another issue. Frank we may have to take some of that good Indiana corn and brew up some special racing fuel if prices keep going up. Like I said earlier, we will print all the engine specs after the dyno results. I have a potential date with Ted on 16 May to pick the engine up, and then we will all know what it will do. I will say, this engine is very similar to Ted's roadster engine.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
OK, WE ARE MAKING SMOKE!! I talked to Ted today, he had made 5 or 6 pulls and after some set backs with a water leak,  was over 400 hp @ 6200 and he is still tuning on it! I'll be heading out there Sunday so I can be setting in his driveway bright and early Monday morning.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Yes RB, getting excited. Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise, we will be in Columbus.

Ted emailed me a dyno sheet, but dumbass me can't figure out how to convert it from a pdf file to a format that can be posted to the forum, so for now I'll just give the top numbers.

H/P 415.4 @ 6000

TQ 400.8 @ 4700

He was still working with it friday so these numbers may change a little. He was finding that carb spacers were making a huge difference, I'll let him talk about that later. He was having a problem getting the idle down to where he wanted it, but some of that may be the Isky 505 T cam, it was at 1200 rpm and he though that it should be around 1000rpm.

This engine is very basic, so I am well pleased with these numbers.

292 block, 312 crank = 337 ci

mild ported posted G heads (stock dia valves)

Wiseco forged pistons (13 to 1 cr)

Isky 505T cam (Dove rockers)

Mummert intake (stock out of the box)

Eaton modified 750 vac sec Holley carb (830 cfm)

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
OK she is home safe and sound.

I have a ton of eye candy that Ted gave me, as soon as I get it downloaded, I'll post more. I also have a dyno vidio with sound, I'll post if I can figure out how too. I may have to get Charlie to help with that.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Sorry guys but I don't want to go through the problems of tuning these old setups. They look cool but one of Ted's worked over 750 Holleys will out perform any of those old systems and make life a whole lot easier. The only thing that might make me change my mind would be one of RB's injector systems, now that would look good on the Falcon. John will have some more intakes soon, so I'll just wait until he has some more unless one turns up.

Bill if it runs fast enough to need a parachuite, someone else will be driving it!

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Gary, the old stuff looks good and I admire those that can make it run right. The last multi carb setup that I worked on was my friends 57 vette with two fours. This was back in the mid 60's and it was a constant pain in the ass. My cousin had a J3 Olds that ran good, but he was an excellant mechanic and kept it in top shape. Plus just the cost of restoring that many old carbs would put a dent in the wallet.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Papa's got a new crew member!

Karli Brooke Henderson arrived 7 Apr 2011!

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Thanks all, no Charlie this is number two. She has a big sister four year old Kaylee Grace.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
OK, got that out of my system, now back to the Falcon. Ted tells me that the short block is assemblied, heads are done, just waiting on Mummert to get an intake finished. Plans are to pickup the engine mid May provided we can get the intake. Keeping my fingers crossed. The engine sounds like it is going to be alot more than than I hoped for with my budget.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Gary, I saw those in the last Summit book that I received, but I don't think the mother or grandma would go along with that. They think that I'm crazy for wanting to do it myself.

Tim, if those patches turn out as good as they look in the picture, I'll for sure need some more. I have several nice shirts with (Belzon) embroidered on them. This was the company that I worked for after I retired from the National Guard. I am hoping that the patches will cover up their name.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
I received my new Moser axles today to go along with the spool that Santa brought.

Sorry about the fuzzy pictures.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
A little update for those following along,

Quarter panel spot painted after opening it up for tire clearance

33 spline axles, spool and 4.56 gears installed along with a little more housing bracing

Fuel system plumbed in the rear, more later!

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Yes Gary, I finished the headers. They are not professional quality, but I think they will pass gas. You are correct, nothing like new parts to light a fire under you.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Hi and welcome to the site. Sounds like an interesting project that you have there. The big race will be at National Trails Raceway in Columbus OH labor day weekend, other than that test and tune at Montgomery Motorsports Park. There is a deal in the works to run 6 to 8 nostalgia races in GA, FL, AL, and MS. I'll have more details on that later, but it's looking pretty promising right now.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Darrell once again welcome to the site and if you are ever up I65, I am at exit 151.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
I talked with Ted yesterday, the engine is coming along nicely. He thinks we should be making smoke in a couple of weeks. I have given him a free hand within my budget, and from what he has told me, I am stoked! I can't wait too see the results on the dyno.  Still looking for a intake if anyone has a Mummert that they will part with, let me know.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
I tried to blow the picture up and even though it gets real fuzzie, I do believe that it is Linda Vaughan putting a Hurst decal on the car.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
By the way Tim, I droped you a care package in the mail today. Hope you can put it to use. I'll get the rods to you at a later date.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Wow Paul, I juess I forgot about that, maybe I can find one of those gadgets that they use on airplanes to measure airspeed and mount it on the roof.

By the way, I talked to Ted yesterday and he is working on the heads now, he said he should have the engine completed in about eight weeks. Can't wait to hear this thing make some noise.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Go for it Billy, they are light and parts are still fairly cheap. I am still thinking about that Pinto that Gary had at Columbus last year. I saw one go on ebay for cheap or how about a later Mustang, the late 80's early 90's ones can be had for a song, and lots of chassis parts for them.
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Hey Lynn, I secound Gary's comment. How about some updated pic's of the 57. I juess I should come clean on the paint job, it is not red, white, and blue as it appears in the pictures. It is red, gray, and blue. It is Ford tractor paint from Tractor Supply @ $11.99 per qt. Not counting thinner and hardner, I have $36.00 in the paint job. I told you guys that I was cheap!
By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Tim it is an enamel solvent based paint. It dries to the touch in 4 to 8 hours but like all solvent based paints, it takes days or weeks for all the solvents to evaporate. The pros and cons of using this paint have been debated for years over on the HAMB and while I agree that it has drawbacks, it was the right choice for me and this car. The most important reason being cost, and I admit that at some point I may break down and have it painted by a pro. But for right now I can use that $1500/$2000 for other things like an engine. I doubt that you can even buy it in CA with your laws.
By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
Thanks for the offer Bill and Charlie, but still to much other stuff to do. I have to build a transmission, rear end, buy axles, slicks, and a driveshaft. Ted offered to loan me the engine that the Church Bros have been using in their T Bird. I'll just keep plugging away and maybe it will be ready next spring so I can run it at the local tracks some before hauling it to Columbus. It would be a bummer to tow all the way up there and have in not perform.

Chuck, I have your stuff boxed up and I am going to bring some more parts that maybe I can make a buck on. If anyone needs anything that I might have give me a call (334) 227-3004 and I will bring it to save on shipping.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
Looking forward to it Tim, by the way it would be so cool if all three of the diggers could make it the same year.
By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
OK, I promised a bit of an update a few weeks ago. I pulled the old girl out into the sunlight for the first time today for a bath.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
I decided to go ahead and add the picture before I get timed out. I have spent the last month building the fiberglass hood and if you notice just in front of the rear slicks, I had to open up the wheel wells a bit to clear the 30 X 9 slicks. Still need to touch up the paint.

Ted has been given the go ahead on the engine, it should be ready by early spring. I am working on the C4 trans now, and plan on pulling the rearend next week to complete it. I have decided to add a back brace to the housing and have a new Moser full spool to replace the 28 spline mini in it now,(thanks Santa). I plan on ordering a set of Moser axles next week. I'll hopefully be able to give more details on the engine in the next few weeks.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Thanks Guys, Charlie the hood was a challenge and a pain in the ass.

The only aftermarket one that I could find did not have the scoop and was more than I wanted to pay plus it would have had truck freight added, over $600 total and I would have still had to add the scoop. So with more time than money, I just build my own, not perfect, but it turned out OK for a race car.

By Glen Henderson - 13 Years Ago
Thanks for posting this one Seppo, I have never seen it before. Looks to be from NY and a high dollar operation for the day.
By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
I like "Weekend Warrior" myself and it fits, but in 1966 at Ft Benning it was a cuss word. I heard it everyday for 6 weeks during basic training. Today those of us that served in the National Guard wear it as a badge of honor, but sadly there are still those in the active duty side of this "Army of one" that  look down on the guard. My son just completed the Officer Basic Course at FT Knox and in a class of 54, he had the highest grade avarage, a perfect 100, but he was not awarded the honor grad. Off line some of the instructors told him that it was because he was a Guardsman, and that it would not look good for the active component if a Guardsman was awarded the honor grad.
By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
Gary, those will not fit. I have a set and tried everway I could think of, but just could not make them fit. They will fit a 57 ford however. These are 1 1/2 in primary and the ones that I am building are 1 3/4 in. I will have over $350 in these if I don't screw up any more tubing.
By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
Gary, "Bird of Prey", that ain't half bad for a Falcon or Tbird name, I'll have to add that to the list.
By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
Building a header is a "PAIN"

Building a header that fits is a "PAIN IN THE ASS"

Building a set of headers that fit is a "ROYAL PAIN THE THE ASS'

I have a new found respect for what Jerry Christenson does, these took 4 days and a 30 pack to cobble together.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
A few more updates, I was afraid to push my luck by uploading more pictures to the above post

Gauges installed,

Interior coming together, more later.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
Charlie, I'm not sure that these deserve a how to just yet, they are just cobbled together more for fit than function. This was my first effort at making headers and a lot of pipe wound up in the scrap pile. The problem that I had was getting the two sides to match and as is, one side is still longer and exits at a different angle. I am already thinking about building a second set using things that I learned from these. One idea that I have is to mount a block and heads on an engine stand and build a jig that can be bolted to the block. This will allow me to work both sides at the same time. One thing that I learned on these is that you need to cut a right and left pipe at the same time before you weld them up or you'll never get them the same. These are round flange 1 3/4", I want to use square flanges on the next set with step primaries 1 3/4 up to  1 7/8.  But rest assured that Jerry C has nothing to fear about me becoming his competition.
By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
Bob you are right, but the only rear bumper that I have was rusted out and bent up. I looked for quite awhile and could not find a decent one at a reasonable price, so fiberglass is cheap and it was something that I wanted to try my hand at. While getting the weight to the rear is important, reducing overall weight is my main goal. I am trying to come in at under 2800 lbs. I don't think that I will have a problem with weight transfer because of the long ladder bars, in fact if I drop them down to the lowest hole, the intersection point is just to the rear of the front axle. This thing could very well become a wheelstander if my nerves would stand it. The car that I am using as insiration was raced in TX in the late 60's and it had some homemade wheelie bars, I may have to come up with a set before it is overwith.
By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
It's looking a little better.

I still have to get the front sheet metal sprayed.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
I had not though of the Sox and Martin cars, there was at least one Ford here in the south that used this scheme.

I don't intend to imply that my car will ever look this good, but mine sure didn't cost as much either.

Ted, yea I'm getting closer, but still waiting on my rich uncle to pass before I give you the go ahead. I had hoped to have it ready for Columbus this year, but it ain't gonna happen. If I don't get with you before, we will finalize the deal at Columbus.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago

OK I got the fenders painted today, a little better than the rest of the car, as I learned a little more about this paint. This is the first car that I have painted in over 35 years. Now for the fun part, I need a name for the car, I have a few names in mind, but interested in what you guys think. Keep in mind my southern roots and military background, let me know what your idea's are.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
That is a pretty good one Bill, but I don't know if all those "Yank"s" will let me into Ohio with a name like that.

Here are the ones that I have come up with:

Dixie Twister

Dixie Stripper

Rebel Rouser

All have been used in the past, but what the heck, I like them.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
I like that Gary and will most likely use it somewhere. I am leaning towards "Rebel Rouser", from the 60's instrumental by Dwayne Eddy or "Dixie Stripper". I have a old and dear friend that is the best sign painter I have ever met and I hope to have him letter the car. No stick on's for me!

The car is basically finished except for the drive train, tires, and seat belts. I hope to be able to give Ted the go ahead on the engine shortly and I will start building up the C4 and rearend before the summers over. I am going to get back on the headers next week and hope to pass them off to Ted at Columbus so he can use them when he dyno's the engine.

Thanks to everone on the site for your support, but I am ready to wrap this one up so I can get back on my 57 Custom.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
Charlie, I fab'ed them from 3/16" plate. The shocks are from a mid 80's full size scrub blazer, just because I had them and they where free. The front springs are four leafs from a 64 f100, I may have to add a fifth leaf later on. I boxed the stock cross member and used the stock motor mount frame brackets. I fab'ed solid mounts that bolt to the stock frame mounts. I am using the flat-o-matic C4 adapter now, but after my visit with Ted, I may go with a SFI FE bellhousing later on and if I do that I most likely will replace the mounts with front and rear engine plates.

Does anyone have a nice simple wiring diagram that they can post or send me a copy. I have draw one up for the falcon, but just want to check before I start pulling wires. I have the basics, but I want to add relays for components such as fan, water pump ect. The complete system will consist of trunk mounted batt and cutoff switch, rear mounted fuel pump, starter relay, and starter. the dash will have a batt switch, start switch, oil pressure, water temp, volt meter and tach. Any suggestions on relays and fuse panels will be appreciated along with sorces.
By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
OK, I promised some updates, I'll try if the site does not time out on me. First I got the sheet metal in the trunk and fuel cell, batt box mounted.

Fab'ed up a fiberglass rear bumper

Got the seat frame built and seat installed.

Templates for windshield and side glass, at $100 a sheet, you don't want to take a chance on screwing up a sheet of Lexan.

and the lexan for tde w/s

Next up I hope to get it in final primer in the next couple of weeks.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
Thanks Tim and Charlie, I have been involved in circle track car builds that went from a pile of tubing to a car in three weeks. I am convinced that trying to take an old car and turn it into something totally different is more difficult. Just so many thing to work out and think about to try to get it as period correct as possible. Take the seat, I have an alum racing seat that I put in the car, but it just didn't look right. Since old van seat are hard to find these days, I got a  seat from a mid 80's Freightliner, removed the airride base and built a tube frame for it. A lot of work for a seat, but I think it looks more period correct than the modern alum racing seat. I could not find a decent rear bumper, so I took my old bent and rusted one and use it as a mold to make the fiberglass one. About a weeks work, but I think it turned out pretty good for a first try.
By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
Kidd, I like the 6 bangers and a falcon is the perfect car for one and alot cheaper than a y block. Good luck with yours.

Tim, I would love to come to Eagle Field just to watch, but it's just to far. I do want to take one more trip out west before we get to old to travel.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
Finally found some proper gasser wheels that would fit the rear yesterday

Juess I need to go on and order the M&H's

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
Right now all I have is a couple of small elec heaters, but it is well insulated and with the weather that we have been having, I've been working out there every day. The shop is my pride and joy and the reason my car projects have been slowed down for the last couple of years. I decided that I was to old to work under the pecam tree any more. A lot of money but what the hell I can't carry it with me and at least now when the goverment finally gets it they will have to sell it to someone else.
By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
The front end is from a 65 econoline narrowed 4 3/4", 64 F100 springs w/ one leaf removed, 63 Galaxie steering box, late Jeep 2 wheel drive drag link shortend for the cross steer, 57 ford steering arm cut off, bolted and welded to the righthand econoline spindle. When I pull the mockup engine, I will try to get some pictures of it.

The shop is 40 X 50 with 10' high walls and still not big enough, between my wife's stuff and my stuff. we filled it up fast.

Thanks for the offer to help Charlie, right now after the holidays funds are exhausted, so I'm just working on the body stuff and fitting chassis parts. When I get a little ahead again and get serious I'll let you know.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
The leaf springs keep the axle tracking true just as in the orginal application. Yes I narrowed the axle myself, although I did take it to a certified welding shop for the weld up. I built a heavy jig out of 4x4 tubing, bolted the axle to it at the spring pads and made the cuts  offset from the centerline, Then moved it in beveled the heck out of the cut lines, rebolted it to the heavy 4x4 and had the welding shop weld it back together. Just like Hubert Platt did in 1964. By the way I have the axle set at 10 degrees neg caster. The reason I went with the F100 springs is that they are shorter than the Econoline springs, and the short trailer springs from MAS or Speedway just did not do it for me. I have a MAS tube axle for Econoline spindles that I decided not to use if anyone is interested, I'll make them a heck of a deal on it.

I worked on getting a dash back in the car today, turned out pretty good, well post a picture tomorrow.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
POS, NEG, whatever! Just tilt it back until the wheels flop over and then raise it backup a little bit. If it looks like a road grader when you turn the steering, it should be right! Thanks for the offer Bill, I may take you up on it when it's time to wire the beast.
By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago

Got the dash in yesterday, John I've always had the "fevor" just never could afford the "pill". Frank talk about crazy, how about a guy that wanted a F code 57 so bad that he built all of the parts himself.

By Glen Henderson - 14 Years Ago
Some updates on the front suspension and engine mounts

The front suspension and engine/trans mounts are now complete. Camera batt's died before I could get a completed shot. I will be moving on to completing the rear suspension next week and complete the interior floor rebuild. Then on to roughing in the plumbing and elec.  The core support and rad are mounted. Will post more pic's next week.

Another big plus for the tractor paint...........I used them for years on dirt track cars and even when the body got bent up(as sometimes happens in dirt track racing)that tractor paint would stay on better than other paints.
By PWH42 - 13 Years Ago
Frank,

Back in 57 in the very small town in central Illinois where I spent a lot of Friday and Saturday nights "draggin' main",the only time everyone quieted their pipes and turned the radio way up was when WLS played Rebel Rouser. You could hear the twang in the next county. So,yeah,I know who Duane Eddie is.I think all the local cops and older citizens knew also.

Glen Henderson (5/19/2011)
The kit comes with some stud adapters that are used with a stock dia converter, but since I am running a 10" 3500 stall, I had to come up with a way to adapt it. Thus the alum spacers that sandwich the converter to the flexplate. If anyone is ever in a simular situation, let me know. I had to pay for a cad program to cut the plates on a waterjet, but the shop that I used has them on file now so the next batch should be cheaper.

Glen, I have almost identical combination in my wagon with Flat-o-Matic adapter. Look my solution:

Sorry Glenn, I was trying to make light of the lack of available manifolds, Less has always been more for me. back in my youth we went from a tunnel ram,two 660 center squirt holleys and a toploader to an 850 double pumper, victor jr. and a glide and only slowed down 3 thenths of a second. The big plus was a whole lot less breakage. You are spending too much on your motor to be agravated by a set-up like that.

Wow, you have really come along with that great looking Falcon.  I like the hood very much.  I bet it is as functional as it is nostalgic.  Those hoods always screamed FORD.

By 57FordPU - 13 Years Ago
Beautiful baby, congratulations grandpa.  Is this your first?
By 57FordPU - 13 Years Ago
Nice work Glen.  You won't be able to pull the wool over their eyes for very long.
By 57FordPU - 13 Years Ago
So wise to take it slow.  No need to break anything while trying to ID any problems to take care of before you go blasting down the track.  Hope you continue to make progress on your illness.
By 57FordPU - 11 Years Ago
Glen, that is very impressive. Congratulations on finishing your project and for the great numbers. I would like to also wish you the best for Columbus.

Sweet garage, too. Is it heated?

Ditto on the shop!  looks very roomy and well organized, I'd give anything to have more room.  The more you have the more you want. Tongue

Thanks Tim and Charlie, I have been involved in circle track car builds that went from a pile of tubing to a car in three weeks. I am convinced that trying to take an old car and turn it into something totally different is more difficult.

I believe you are right.  I have be involved in doing both and after the FED build I think it is easier to start from scratch.  I do like what you are doing though and it's too bad you are so far away and not finished, that thing would go great at the Eagle Field event. Wink

By mctim64 - 14 Years Ago
While you guys talking about 6 bangers, the guys that started the Eagle Field event built this one with a 200 Ford I though it was pretty cool and wanted to build something like it although my plans progessed into something a little more. Wink

It is Ford tractor paint from Tractor Supply @ $11.99 per qt. Not counting thinner and hardner, I have $36.00 in the paint job!

Isn't tractor paint oil based?  does it take a long time to dry?

By mctim64 - 13 Years Ago
Good call Glen,  although Elwood looks pretty cool with three 94s I did a little run down the local country airport runway this weekend with the Demon 750 and Blue thunder ment for the Uni and it makes a world of difference.  Idles too, with no sticking floats. Wink

Get it all dialed in for next year (2011) that's when I plan to haul Elwood out there, we'll get together then. Wink

That is gonna be great!! I've had a Y powered Gasser on my mind since i watched the DVD Charlie gave me of the Y-block shootout.. I'm thinking a 62 Comet though.. good going and keep the pics comin

Congratulations Glen. 8.0 seconds in the 1/8 is not that easy to do. Breaking into the 7s will be even better! Stay after it, you'll get to the 7s The Falcon looks good and runs good too.

That Falcon looks good! What steering box are you useing?Im building my 55 sedan into a gasser.Im useing a  mid 60s Econoline axel.Im trying to figure out the steering, cross steering or drag link style like the original Econoline steering? It looks like you are useing a cross steer?

Thanx Glen,Ive seen other gasser cars done in the same fashion,Ive always wondered how the front end doesnt move side to side without a panhard bar?I guess it works.Im going to be useing the stock econoline leafs.Did you narrow that axel yourself?

Glen, that should raise a few eyebrows of the unknowing when you raise the hood... Looking good!
By Bob's 55 - 14 Years Ago
Glen, I have been following your project with great interest. Looks like you will have some fun with your Falcon. One question I have though, Why did you make a Fiberglass Rear Bumper. I always thought that you would want more weight over the rear (hence mounting the battery in the trunk) for maximum traction. I would think that you would want to keep the steel rear bumper and fab a fiberglass front bumper to maximize weight transfer?

Anyway cool car...

I was reading about Duane Eddy on Wikepedia after seeing the reference here. I was/am a huge fan back in the late 50's. His manager/producer, Lee Hazelwood, didn't have an echo chamber so he bought a 2000 gallon water storage tank for Eddy to record in.

Just getting back to the site after an extended absence. Was known as Missouri Mike, now Midwest Mike. The reasons are long and boring.

So, I'm catching up on happenings and the last time I was here you were deciding paint and a name. I'm so glad to see the finished product, I have to echo all the compliments you've received would add more. It's cool, fast and inspiring. Makes me

want to get out in the shop and get back to work.

At 5 months younger than you I'm not so sure that makes me a "young guy" but I like the thought. Let's hope God forgives you if He considers it a lie, and forgives me for loving it.

Rebel Rouser, Duane Eddy.....know them well. Pulled out the old Have "TWANGY" Guitar Will Travel album. Yes, I've got his original first album with the tune that launched his career Moovin' 'n Groovin' and subsequent hits Ramrod and Cannon Ball. And to answer an earlier post, his sax player was Steve Douglas.

Be healthy, be safe, be fast!

Y powered Falcons ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sweet garage, too. Is it heated?
By charliemccraney - 14 Years Ago
Of all of the reasons I've heard for car projects to slow down, that's probably the best one.

Since it's warm enough to work in, I'm willing to help for a weekend, or maybe a few, until it gets warm enough over here to work in the driveway. But my weekends are Sun and Mon.

Off line some of the instructors told him that it was because he was a Guardsman, and that it would not look good for the active component if a Guardsman was awarded the honor grad.

What political bs. That's like saying "you're better than them but you're not suppose to be so we can't give you this award."
By charliemccraney - 14 Years Ago

Here are a couple of shots of Glen’s engine as it was going together.

Here’s the dyno sheet for Glen’s 337” Y.  This should make the Falcon a real bird of prey.

By Ted - 13 Years Ago
yehaabill (5/17/2011)
Ted: How would  have Glenn's engine scored for the EMC deal? Just Curious, Bill
Bill.  As I didn’t run Glen’s engine in the exact same rpm format as is done in the EMC competition, I can’t give an exact ‘scoring’ number.  But a rough estimate doing some extrapolations for the missing values, I get roughly 2040-2050 for a score.  That’s considerably better than my iron headed version did in the 2009 EMC competition.  Assuming the engine had fit the 2010 rules in regards to the compression ratio, then it would have placed 26th out of 40.
By Ted - 13 Years Ago

Glen.  Looking good.  I see you changed the color on the valve covers.  Glad you decided to go Red with the block as it does stand out in the engine bay.

By Ted - 13 Years Ago

My condolences for the loss of a friend.  She is now in a better place and without pain.

By Ted - 13 Years Ago

Great going Glen.  Just take your time and get a feel for the car.  I see easy twelves within your grasp and then solid elevens when all that Y power is unleashed.  Get ready for those ‘big engine’ guys to be looking for that hidden nitrous bottle after you start making some quicker passes.

By Ted - 11 Years Ago
Glen Henderson (1/9/2013)
I am bumping my thread to the top for a guy on another site that is bulding a 66 falcon.
Glen.  Are they also considering Y power?  Two Y powered Falcons would be only too cool.  And what a match race that would make.
By Ted - 11 Years Ago

Glen. While I cringed at the thought of what could have happened with your steering, we are all thankful that it happened right there in the pits. As you mentioned, you are being watched over. When you get a chance, email the information for the upcoming October race.
