Here are a few Pics and a short description of myself and a Friends Land speed racing project. About a year ago while sipping on a few cold ones and maybe alittle homemade whiskey a plan was hatched. We were going to try a modern day attempt at what Karol Miller did in the 50's but with modern technology. This is not a high dollar project with lots of money thrown at it.(although more has been thrown at it than planned for right) It is a group effort of several like minded friends that drive there cars to shows and have fun doing it. We will be towing to the races for logistical purposes (I have driven my 57 y-block ranchwagon from Ga to Vegas and back it is worth doing) its really is the only option. We will run a 55 Fairlane in the C/CGPRO (C Classic Gas Production) Class. We are going to run ECTA races in NC to sort out a few things and head for the salt In 2010 or 2011 depending on our results. I have attempted to due as much of this build my self as possible verses farming out work to the pros. All metal fab was performed in house with the help of friends. I will attempt to update this as much as possible but I have come to realize im horrible at documenting my work.

What's the metal plate on the rear end for?
|
By 57 ranchwagon - 14 Years Ago

It is a jig that holds the shaft in the correct position for aligning the end caps so no matter how distorted the axle tube get from welding on brackets and pad etc. the bearings are always aligned with the carrier.

Hey Guy great to meet you. Charle Burns has been fun to follow over the last few years as well as inspiration to our effort. I am assuming you will be attending the Aug meet then going to the shootout. Im unsure yet as to the schedule to go out west to the salt will be very dependant on the results from testing and such (hate to waste all the travel money and not be as close to ready as possible. Just heard from a guy on another board that Karol Miller is planing to attend the Sept. USFRA meet and run his replica 56 if that pans out to be true would love to see and race at that event.

Had a pretty productive weekend got the headers built just need to finish weld them and send off for coating. It was our first set of headers and was a little intimidating but turned out good enough considering. Not easy to fit 1 3/4 primary in a 55 ford pretty tight for sure. Wanted to get the mock up engine out and the real bullet in but time ran short. The pipes were a little more time consuming than anticipated. Have some new pic of the work follow the link. Thanks to Brent, Dan and Rooster for the help this weekend. http://s759.photobucket.com/albums/xx231/slg1992002/Lsr%20build%202009/

Time for a quick update things are getting done but lots left to do. Finally finished the trunk got the parachute mounts braced the cell is finally mounted, fuel pump and filter mounted and the battery tray and cut off mounted. That completes the major fab for the trunk. the cage is 80% done and finally mounted the seat and got my 5-point harness mounted. Hoping to have most all the major fab work finished by late this week or early next week so all thats left is to install the engine and finish the wiring and plumbing. Here s few pic and thanks for the support and advice i have received. Sam

Nice job but... that shoulder belt attaching method is not what it should be. The edge of that seat hole makes a cutting effect when the belts go tight in an accident. Have you already bought belts? Distance from that attaching point to your shoulders is also so short that you have to find very short belts or you should consider a wrap around drag harness and a new cross tube at a little higher position.
|
By 57 ranchwagon - 14 Years Ago
|
Thanks for looking out for me but, they are actually mounted per SCTA,ECTA rules and the manufacture recommendation. they have to be 2-4 inches below the top of my shoulder and my shoulders come about 1 1/2 inches over the seat holes so no real chance of chaffing on the seat. It looks a little odd but its drawn out pretty clear in the rule book. Keep the advise coming the more eyes the better. I am enjoying watching your FED build those arrow pedals really cracked me up. When I was a kid the local go cart track had rental carts witg pedals like that they were painted red and green.

Well thing are crazy hectic here. As of tomorrow there is exactly 2 weeks till the first race at Maxton. There are plenty of things left to do but, theres still a real chance we can make it barring any major set backs. The motor is in with trans the trunk is done and painted the cage is done(the 2 last door bars will go in last for easier access). All gauges and controls have been mounted and removed to paint the cage. Front end was rebuilt and inspected. longer studs in the hubs up front. All my safety gear is in except my helmet should be here end of next week along with the drive shaft and window net from stroud. So next week is lots of plumbing and wiring. There is very little fab work left so hopefully all major issues have been resolved. Hoping to fire it up next sat and have a week to handle any leaks and such. Keep your fingers crossed for me and we just might make it. Defiantly not expecting much in the ways of performance the first race just hoping to get thru tech and maybe get licenced. here's a link to a few pics. Thanks Sam http://s759.photobucket.com/albums/xx231/slg1992002/Lsr%20update%203-25-10/ P.S. just made my reservations hope that doesn't jinx me.

Well Folks sorry I haven't been updating this to much lately but the thrash has been on. Well its not looking like its going to happen this race for Maxton. The frustrating part is, out of stupidity I took myself out. I managed to bend a valve in the motor before I ever even started it. Word of caution beware of the piston stop when trying to mark TDC always remove the rocker arm or bad things come in contact. Other than my own stupidity the car looks great and is 90% done will probably work out for the best(have more time to make sure things are right). Will try to get some more pics posted soon.

Here is the latest update almost done just need to finish wiring the Ignition and bolt on the headers . The head was pulled and valve replaced. Still have to plump the rest of the fire system and fuel system and plumb a few oil lines. The window net needs to be mounted and a few bars finished in the cage. Thanks to everyone for the kind words it still amazes me anyone even care about my little build when i see the caliber of cars being built on this site. Here is a link to some new pics.

There are so few Y-block projects other than on this site that it makes all projects interesting, and yours is not just a little undertaking. I like to follow along to see what ideals others around the country have, and how they work out. Have you thought about a pan evacuation system? I would think wide open throttle on a speed run would build a lot of pressure. Great job and looking forward to seeing it at speed

Thanks for the comments glrbird the engine does have a full vacuum pump system on the engine. Its my fault I keep forgetting to snap a pic of it when I have it mounted on the engine. Its just a ford smog pump that pulls vacuum from the valve cover and runs to a breather tank. The engine is built with low tension rings and would have terrible blow by if the vacuum system weren't there. (there ia alot of power to be made in windage and crank vacuum). Thanks for looking out keep any advise coming. Sam

Sounds very heathy! Give us some more details on the intake.
|
By 57 ranchwagon - 14 Years Ago
|
Well the intake is a bit of a mixed bag. It was built by and run on Jerry Christiansen race car about 16 years ago. During the R&D phase of the motor it was dynoed with 4 or 5 diffrent intakes and this one was the winner it was heavily modified with epoxy to suit our motor (diffrent plenum size runner shapes etc.) all done trail and error style on the dyno short of the heads it probably has the most R&D of the motor. It is actually made of sheet mild steel. We are doing some R&D right now on a 2x4 set up and depending on the out come we may have this intake reproduced in sheet aluminum once were happy with the design.

Looks great! Sounds even better! Hope you have a great time at Maxton and get the results you want from a "first time out" event. Your car looks mighty low in the front. Well we made out to Maxton I got two passes in, the first pass was a light throttle Lic. pass that went 129 on a 125 mph lic pass. It felt good drove reasonable well for a 55 and felt like it had plenty left. Then got the OK for a 150 mph lic pass we got in line and fought some drizzle for a few minutes but made a pass of 135 mph but something on the top end felt strange not sure if the converter was slipping or the transmission but went thru the traps in 3rd gear running 6000 rpm but only 135 the math doesn't add up so something is slipping but, thats when disaster strikes the oil pan hits a pot hole on the long shut down we oil down the track with 9 quarts (we were really popular with the staff after that) but even though I shut of the engine when the chute opened the transmission keep spinning the engine with no oil so out with the engine and see what damage has been done. I know it the price you pay for racing so I'm not to bummed out because even though I only made two slow passes it was a blast. Even had a guy ask why I but scrub heads on a ford engine Hopefully not catastrophic and we will be back running in sept.

Is it possible the rear of the car was lifting slightly, allowing the tires to slip at about 135? Karol raised the back of his '56 at Bonneville, maybe allowed air to escape instead of lifting? Your wagon would be less aero than a hardtop, so the tires would have to grip the surface better just to overcome drag. None the less, great job.
|
By 57 ranchwagon - 14 Years Ago
|
Thanks Hoosier any thing is possible but I think it is a combination of to high of a stall converter and possible a slipping transmission. I am running a 55 ford 2 door post so it should have similar aero to karrol Millers car I have a pretty good wedge built in it after reading about his adventures plus were running on concrete with farely sticky drag radials but it was moving around pretty good on the top end.
|
By mctim64 - 14 Years Ago
|
Sorry to hear about your engine but as for the speed 135 is very respectable for a first time out and 129 for a 125 lic. pass is great. Charlie only did 103 the first time out with the "Brick" and there was a lot of tuning after that before the records came. Again it's no fun to hurt your engine but like you said it's part of racing, you'll be back.

I once had a camero that ripped the drain plug when it landed from a wheel stand and ran through at 8500 with out to much damage to the crank and rods, maybe you will get lucky. Anyway looks like a good beginning to your project. I was wondering what the rules say about aero modifications to the car, can you remove the headlight bezels and block the grill opening? You should write more about the car, where it came from and the engine development you guys did. Congrats on getting it to the track and going as fast as it did, even with problems.

Well its been a while since I have updated my build as usual life can sometimes get in the way of racing. Well other than overcoming the build cost and the expense of getting married in May I finally have been able to scratch alittle money together for another attempt at a Maxton record. There being only two races left before the ECTA loses there lease its time to get serious. I sure would like to have my name on one of those records when they close the books on Maxton. I left off with a hurt motor and about 17 mph short of the record. I went through the motor and luckily nothing major apparently the short time with out oil pressure didn't hurt anything (had it apart so new bearing, seals ,etc. after some talking and problem solving about my head gasket issues I have come to the conclusion it was pure stupidity on my part. On all the racing engines I have built in the past I always lock out the distrubitor or use a crank trigger and adjust timing digitally. Well not on this engine set it to about 36* timing for the first couple of passes to be safe. Well Duh this engine still has mechanical advance once it going the timing was way up there so detonation and bye bye head gaskets. The major overhaul was converting to a manual trans. I decided to go with a toploader and a quicktime bellhousing for safety reason. Wow what a mistake. ( I covered the issues on another tread on this forum so I will spare everyone the details) I lost about 4 months dealing with that but it is back together the motor is in and a handful of little things and were going back to Maxton for another try. I was thinking about a few hours on a chassis Dyno any thoughts. I have never used one but considering the drive train change seems like a good Idea. Does anyone have any thoughts on the percentages of HP lost from flywheel numbers to rear wheel numbers? Any way heres a few Pic one of the motor installed and a couple interior showing the shifter and the fact the car now has the right number of pedals a race car should have. Thanks Sam

Just thought I would share with you all our darn near record run at maxton today we got started late due to rain the first passes did happen till about noon we made two passes 145.17 and 144.90x something all on a 147.xx record so close but yet so far that was the 3rd and 4th ever pass on the car and the first 2 with the 4 speed. We are going to try it again in the morning with hopefully better air. The temps were mid 80s with almost 100% humidity most of the day. the last run we had about 6-8 mph head wind so maybe we have a chance tommorow here is a link to our first pass it from the starting line so not much on the hi speed side. What modifications, if any, can you make to reduce drag? Often a lot of improvement can be found there. Did you do any carb tuning for jets etc.. Like you said so close, only 3 mile an hour and you will own the record. Whats are your class rules as far as ducting etc.? Chuck in NH
|
By 57 ranchwagon - 13 Years Ago
|
Just like with Tim's truck we are running a production class so no body mods no air dams or splitters allowed. We have a nice front rake in the ride height but thats about it as far as aero tricks that are legal no taping no ducting allowed. I will seal my carb to the scope for fresh air but just haven't had time if all goes we today i can spend some time this month trying to go faster and not just rebuilding the car. The tuning is untouched i think there is something left with timing and jetting and the air was about as bad as it gets yesterday. Im going to put a little more timing in this morning and and rase my shift points a couple hundred RPM and hope for some cooler dryer air and a lot of luck. Thanks Sam

Well we came up short best and only run today was another 145.00 im not sure if we are hitting a aero wall or running out of HP or gearing issue but the good news is it all still in one piece thereare a few thing that we can improve on there still one race left at Maxton and the air should be much better in October. Thebest part is I had a blast and got some of the best complements a Y-block racer can get getting told your full of it and there no way it still has a Y-block in it. Thankfor all the kind comments. (P.S. the scrub chevelle running in my class ran a best of 138.xx)

Well you got a good base line to go forward on, great outing, How about a chassis dyno to fine that sweet spot in power? 145 in a 55 ford must have been a lot of fun.
|
By 57 ranchwagon - 13 Years Ago
|
Yes the chassis dyno is in the works I was trying to run it some before this race but as usual time gets away from you. We have engine dyno pulls but there several years old and the motor has been changed some what. I think it might respond to some more gear also so a new 3rd member is in the works also. I would like to play with engine timing and carb jets on the dyno also. If anyone has ever chassis dynoed I'm looking for any tips you would like to share.
|
By RB - 13 Years Ago
|
First let me congratulate you on a significant achievement already with your combination. 145 is flying in a 50's Ford.
As far as Chassis dyno tuning here are some tips.
Ignore the horsepower numbers you get. I have found it is very difficult to relate them to engine dyno numbers. Chassis dynos are all over the place as far as what readings you might get. Use them as a tuning tool , forget about what number it makes and concentrate on making changes that improve the number.
Find an operator that can tune a carburetor. A lot of techs are so deep into efi that tuning a carb is not their strong suit. Keep notes on the air temp and humidity at your test session so you can fine tune at the track based on the dyno data
Use the power curve generated by the dyno to find best gear/rpm combo
I know there is a record in that car!

Well the final Maxton came and went the records books are sealed and we don't have a record there. We did how ever meet some really good people and had alot of fun. Sat. turned out to be a wasted day we had a sustained 15-18 mph head wind with gust to 25. we made a pass and went 138.9xx way off and didn't know if it was all head wind or some of the changed we made. (went from a 3:15 rear gear to a 2:95 and made a cold air ducted intake system). The car was all over from the wind push so we called it a day.(they also had record turn out for the last race over 3 hr wait to make a pass.Got to the track early Sun morning and beautiful fall morning low 50 and no wind waited in line till 11:45 and made the first pass went 140.1xx it layed down in high gear it just couldn't pull more than 5400 RPM so right back in line with no time to change out the gear. So we decided to pull of the cold air system to see if it helped or hurt. The ECTA crew said runs were going to be cut off at 2:00 not a minute more. We barely made it to line my final Maxton time slip reads 2:01. the car went 140.3xx so looks like the cold air system didn't hurt or help (I suspect in 80-90 degree weather it might show some more improvement). Bottom line we went the wrong direction but we had alot of fun doing it. I think my crew said it best just because we don't have to run the little R sticker anymore does not mean were not still rookies. Here a video from the last pass at Maxton. Thanks Sam http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w-QqqmsNsQ&feature=feedu

If you factor in the head wind, it looks like you did improve. You just need more favorable track conditions.

By slumlord444 - 13 Years Ago

I am thinking the gear is too high for the horsepower you are pulling. Could be wrong and the wind could be the culprit. Wish I could do it myself. A run at Boniville with my T-Bird has always been on my bucket list. Will problably have to settle for the drag strip though.
