bonnet vs. air box

In planning ahead for my 331cu.in. blown Y-Block project, I was just wondering why I couldn't use something like a '68 Shelby pressure (air) box instead of a blower bonnet for the carb. It would seem that with the box I would have more choices for carb selection as long as the bores and mounting locations matched. Also, I wouldn't need to try to seal the throttle shafts and accelerator pump. The bonnet would be easier to set-up, but then you have all the carb mods you need to make. I know the air box isn't correct for the Y-Block, I'm just trying to figure which would be the better way to go.

Thanks,

Rono.

RONO I HAVE A PAXTON BOX FROM THE EARLY 60'S IT BOLTS TO THE TOP OF MY Y-BLOCK INTAKE, THE ONLY DRAW BACK IT IS SHORT AND WIDE. A HOLLEY OR DEMON IS TO LONG TO FIT INSIDE IT. I WILL HAVE TO USE A CARTER-WEBBER- EDELBROCK STYLE CARB. TOM

Thanks for the reply. I like the Edlebrock Performer carbs. I'm running them on my current Y-block. Do you see any problems with the linkage where it comes through the box? Is it possible to set-up a cable pull for the throttle?

Thanks.

Where the cable goes through the plenum box, it needs to be air tight.  That's going to be tough to do with a moving cable and still trying to maintain pressure within the box under boost conditions.  Most installations have a throttle bell crank permanently fixed in the bottom half of the box so it can be made air tight with linkages going to the bellcrank on the outside of the box and then a second set of linkage connecting the bellcrank on the inside of the box to the carb.

MY SUPERCHARGER BOX IS AS TED DESCRIPED IT, THE SEALED BELL CRANK COMES OUT THE SIDE OF THE BOX AND A CABLE THROTTLE COULD BE HOOKED UP AT THAT POINT. I WILL TRY TO POST SOME PICTURES. TOM
