I think they'll be in awe when they see that we can be competitive with 50 year old technology. They will fear the potential that lurks with aftermarket development.
Good luck!

Guys. Thanks for the accolades. With the engine now put back to the parameters that has produced the best results up until now, I’ll be making just a few checkout pulls on the EMC engine today and then it comes off the dyno to get readied for the trip to Ohio. There’s a very good chance the Y will be the only engine there with oem iron heads. Although I don’t see this engine being anywhere near the top of the list as far as the scoring goes, I still plan on this engine to at least make a good showing. A series of solid dyno pulls at the EMC competition will at least show what one of these vintage engines is capable of and still being on 91 octane pump fuel. Andrew. Be sure to drop by and say Hi.

As far as I'm concerned you, TED and the Yblock in this instance ARE already winners.
Congratulations on all your hard work and dedication to get into the selection.
You persevered and lobbied for all the mushroom lifter thing last year and "they" took notice.
I believe that more and more people are going to get interested in what yblockers have and want to learn more about it.
It's a good thing I already have a couple of them, after this, demand may go up and the price.
Go get 'em, Ted.

ted,
KILLER!
man, just the exposure to all the big league magazines and exotic engine builders is going to create lots of attention.
sometimes a kick out of the ordinary B/B chevy is all it takes.
if anybody can grab some video of the Y run, that would be great too!
(i'm also glad to see an FE team entered too)
GO FORD!!

Here’s a couple of pics of the EMC engine, one on the dyno and the other with it sitting in the floor yesterday getting it ready to package up for transport. After this competition is done, I’ll post some of the dyno info which is surprising good considering the engine is 10.1:1CR and has very good idling characteristics. Crossing my fingers that the results I had on my dyno can be duplicated or even bettered on the dynos at the University of Northwestern Ohio.

Ted, tell us more about that electric water pump assembly. We might want similar one to our dragster. What brand and what modifications needed?
|
By Glen Henderson - 15 Years Ago
|
Seppo: It maybe a day or two before Ted can reply, so I'll tell you what I know about the waterpump. It's a bigblock scrub pump with a machined adapter for the Y timing cover. I asked him the same thing a few months back. I don't know if he has plans to market it or not, but it looks cool. If you look on Ted's web site there are other pictures.

Thanks Glen. I have no hurry. Soon there will be 40 inches of snow on the ground and we all fall into winter sleep and we won't wake up until spring arrives Hope I will see dreams about electrical water pumps and at least thousand horses of power .

These are the comments from EMC crew. Well done Ted. Now we just have to wait and see all the rest results to see how high Ted will end up at ranking. 9:00 - Team #6 Ted Eaton Specialty & Balancing/Ford Ted Eaton of Ted Eaton Specialty and Balancing has a fondness for the Y-block Ford. These engines were very advanced for their time, and achieved notoriety in Nascar and other racing venues in the late fifties. Ted sought to update the performance of one of these classic engines, while keeping a traditional look. The 375-cubic inch engine performed well, easily making over 400 horsepower. While the combination definitely came to the competition as an underdog, it was a treat to be able to see what one of these engines can do. |

Pull # | 1 | 2 | 3 | Avg | Torque | 379.6 | 377 | 377.5 | 378 | Horsepower | 354.9 | 352.1 | 352.4 | 353.1 | Final Score - 1,949.8@ 375 CI |
I think the highest score at the moment is 2.5 and something...

Highest score is now 2646 to Jon Kaases second team (Jon Kaase Racing (Almost Kaase)/Ford). 403 Cleveland.

Well, we're not last! A 426 Chrysler got 1864.6 and there are a few that did not finish.
And peaking over 400hp on pump gas, something none of the mainstream magazines have done! That's sure to get some attention.

Fantastic. A creditable showing with IRON 50 Year old heads !! Has anybody seen any 50's (or 60's or 70's or 80's Scrubs with factory heads there. i don't think so! Congratulations to Ted, Jerry and Harry. You guys are the MAN (or Men)!! with this, Bob Lindsay and John Feistritzer any remaining questions about Ford Y Blocks performance has been answered.

Get the man a can of Greecian Formula....Joke.. It was Spring Thaw that I saw Ted last, and he was rushed there chasing his bonnet... He and all the rest deserve all the praise that we as a Y commuity can give.. and I as one of the Greatest group of auto nuts do... Congrates Crew..

A great effort by everyone involved especially Ted. The Y must be near the top of the FACTORY IRON Head brigade, it might even be a brigade of one!! The Y is clearly the BEST of 1956 technology!!

And guys, I am one lucky y-blocker! I only live a bit over an hour from Ted and can run down to Doc Eaton's even after work in the afternoon!
Ted had two very good people in his tech crew. Harry and Jerry are both proven winners, I just wonder how many "scrub" jokes Jerry made!!!??? Not shabby results at all for old iron heads!
Guess I will have to make a run down to Ted's after he gets back to get all the juicy details!

Question? Ted built a 375 cu. in Y-Block? How did he do that?

Paul: I'm sure Ted will reveal the details in due time, but those who contributed parts or cash to the cause received a newsletter that explained why he had to drop from 402 to 375 inches.

Like John said, I'll wait and let Ted tell the whole story in his own time, but I will let out one amazing fact. A little over three weeks ago this engine was just a thought! I am sure that once you hear the complete story, you will see what I am talking about and the results are even more amazing.
|
By Doug T - 15 Years Ago
|
Confirming my earlier guess here is Ted's comment to Bob Martin this morning "The Y entry was also the only engine with oem iron heads. Everything else was some form of aftermarket head." If you looked at the Pop rodding website you will have also noted that the other engines all had exotic intakes most with multiple carbs. The score will not place the Y very high in the standings, but Ted noted that his dyno runs in Texas were quite a bit higher. Boy is this going to be fuel for the hot stove league this winter!!

I did get to hear the motor make a pull, although I was at least a quarter mile away I was able to hear it scream! I know they make three pulls and average the numbers for a final score, but on each pull is horsepower and torque averaged from 3000-7000r.p.m which would explain the lower numbers? If so, I'm, curious to hear peak numbers. Congrats on a sucsessful showing! -Andrew

Congratulations Ted, Harry and Jerry. Outstanding effort. I'll bet the 3 of you had a heck of a time there. Exciting and nerve racking at the same time. Just getting there and making 3 clean runs is an acomplishment. Most years there are a few no-shows and DNF's. I'll bet the Magazine guys were a little surprized to see a Y-Block make well over 400hp. I am a little puzzled by the discrepancy of your dyno and the test dyno. Both DTS brand but your score was about 90 points lower than you expected from your testing as I understand it. Maybe by the next time we will have some better heads. Plan to start writing program next week. Planned to start last weekend but machine center developed a noisy axis. Just tracked it down today. Factory over tightened the thrust bearing.
|
By RB - 15 Years Ago
|
All the competitors were bitching that the dyno's were much stingier than their testing indicated.. Kaase was down about 100 hp on one of his engines.. Ted was down about 30 hp from his own dyno
|
By pegleg - 15 Years Ago
|
That hurt the numbers from everyone, but I guess as long as it was consistent, it wouldn't affect the outcome.
