Hollow Head, I fully understand your frustration. Although I can pick up the phone and have UPS back in the driveway with a truck load of parts in a day or two, it's just not in the budget. I have to buy or make parts as the funds are available and right now I am just working on stuff with parts that I have gathered over the years. I will get there, but it just takes time and money.

When you start digging into our histories, you start to find some very confusing patterns. For example Hoosiers ancestors were Germans (never guessed that from the name eh?). Canadian (Rob) has Itialian back ground. Mine's Swiss and Irish, with a bit of English thrown in(limey!) I'd bet most of the Australian contingent is ex-UK. We have some Netherland folks here, some Argentinians. JMUK is English, not sure about Y Blocker, although the name is English, as is Eaton (Ted). What a mish-mash. Neat.

Ted, Cool that you can trace it back that far. My mother tried that in the '60's, and found one of my Dad's ancestors was a pirate, hung by the British! They didn't even bother to send him to OZ. She got mad and stopped that endeavor. The old man thought it was hilarious until he got the bill from the "Geneology Expert." She couldn't brag about it to Her bridge club buddies and he was mad for a month! Moz, I suspected that most of you guys were decendants of that group. I can tell from Lon's "shifty eyes"

Throttle position in an aircraft is read off a "Manifold Pressure Gauge" when the throttle is wide open at sea level on a standard day the gauge should read 29 in. hg. Usually reads 28 though. Which is equivalent to approx. 14.7 psi. As you gain altitude, you lose ambient pressure, and horsepower etc.

I've been telling my buddy in Singleton, NSW (for years) that the reason Aussies swear so hearty - is the Vegemite. Thanks for the explanation, fuel injected turbos are the way to make lots of streetable horsepower as demonstrated by this years HOT ROD drag week. Larry Larson's twin turbo Nova traveled 1200 miles on the highway and ran a 6.95 @ 209 at the track on 87 octane gas. That may be on the edge, but a streetable, 10 second twin turbocharged Y-block car might be possible if you could get the head gaskets to live. It will be interesting how fast the altered will go, keep us posted. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH-y2mxYS6c

Yesterday I was welding the frame, and today we were restoring the Hollow Machine at Jyrki's garage to get it ready for the Finnish Ford Nationals event. This time nothing serious on wheels. We put in Jyrki's old 3-speed with our old reliable test bench 272 engine and we up graded the fuel delivery to a dual carb setup. Nostalgia looks, more show than go . But, that will be a good tow machine for the dragster next year So, book us two car places if you find a real hardcore Y-block ferry.... Oh, it's so hard to be on holidays . Can't wait to get back to work and to do more welding job for the frame...

Reed... seems to me that you are a H.A.M.B.er too What a great topic that Drag Cars in motion...!!! Over 600 pages of old Drag Race things. We are building that chassis with Mark Williams drawings on the wall. Hard tail altered / funny car specs from 1999. It's a mild steel chassis. Engine that will be is our twin turbo efi Y-block 292. Wilcap adapter to Powerglide with short planetary and some home build 9" rearend with 4.56 gears to start with. 33" slicks and then some boost (big time this time) on top of it. Jep... that's our plan... Dream? To beat that old 8.15 record of course . Will it ever happen - who knows!
|
By Hollow Head - 12 Years Ago
|
What? For the whole engine? Well, that would not be very aerodynamic . The one who scares, won't be driving that one anyhow. Jyrki already has experience about oil and water coming to his helmet, so what else could come.....

Man, I just like cooking . And I love my gas grill! Our new copper head gaskets needed to be softened, so I put them to my grill while waiting it to be warm enough for my sausages... The recipe was to heat them until colour turns to cherry red and so it did... So then I dipped them to water container... Really don't know was this the right method but then it was time to cook some evening meal . So, tomorrow I will put those gaskets between the block and the heads and check the piston to valve clearance etc. Our next race is 30th of June, so please keep your thumbs up to make us get the engine ready for that .

Ups, have forgotten to update this topic. Dragster is done and it's been on the track for eight runs. Goes straight and so far best time is 11,818 with problems to hold the car at stand still cause transbrake didn't work properly. Reason was false setting of the shift cable. Me walking and yfreak57 driving . Now we are waiting for new con rods and pistons to make the engine last longer under boost .

We will still use the scoop and intercooler under it. It seems to work ok and as the cooler is made for two inlets and two outlets,we don't even need to change it. Of course it could be made of thicker core, but we'll go with that now. Intercooling and specially dimensions of pipes and their shape inside of the cooler is very scientific, but as usual, limited space and limited funds make us use what we can .

Carson, thanks for your comment and warning. At the moment we have neck collar to use and the head cage is wrapped with sfi spec paddings. HANS will be required here in Finland from start of 2012 in drag racing, so that will be on shopping list then. However, if the things go bad, it's not about the way how your head is protected from outside. Impacts inside of head are also violent if you experience lots of G forces when rolling down the track and in reality, you can't do much to that. Brains just are not for using as a boxing bag... And anyway, if life is meant to be spend sitting home alone, is it worh anything. I'd rather experience something wild and loud. BTW Carson, do you have any outings left for this year with '54?
|
By Hollow Head - 14 Years Ago
|
I have no clue about how it works . Ok, brains give the injectors order to keep themselves open for some time and fuel pressure behind them gives a spray of fuel to intake runners . Simo (aka LordMrFord ) knows better why and how this happens. Long story short, it just works, it's accurate and gives us a lots of opportunitys to improve our performance...

Jihaa!! First runs done. Jyrki at Line Up. Sooo excited before first run Ooops... Turbo inhaled that air cleaner! Should have removed it before the run We got only three runs and then... We got our socks wet... badly! We hadn't even enough time to take dragster under the tent. It came so quickly and hard. The times? Who cares.... First as a shake down run - 14,714 / 112,78 km/h. Second - 12,744 / 163,79 km/h and third as a best - 11,926 / 184,05 km/h. And Jyrki said he wasn't pushing flat out at that last either. Car went straight without any wobbling at the front end. Boost pressure was 0.7 bar at that last one. With couple of more runs, we would have gone to 10s

More issues today, so engine still sits on the floor. Rear engine plate interfered with the dizzy, so I had to make more room for it. But, for some light in the darkness is that the scoop will be painted tomorrow too .

Tim, we have allmost all parts from Chassis Shop. C42-390 Stiletto Steering box with splined coupler and pitman arm. C42-454 Spindle set, Anglia style with C42-457 5" steering arms. One extra 5" long steering arm to change the direction of the movement. C42-590 Billet Wheel hubs with three bolt patterns. C42-592 Bearings & seals. C42-624 Dust Caps. C42-487 Steering Wheel with black grips. C42-036 Steering shaft kit, includes two tubes, quick release steering hub, two nylon bushings, two bushing sleeves, slined coupler, anti push back sleeve. We also bought C42-543 control lever for using the brakes, but we decided to operate brakes with foot, so that lever may find it's way to be used as a chute release handle . Also we have that three bar front end kit from Chassis Shop, but I quess you will be using front axle? I think you can also use their rack-n-pinion steering with u-joints. Rack is half the price of that funny car steering box. Pro-Werks is the brand that they sell. And so far all parts have been excellent quality. www.chassisshop.com Go there and drool

Good to see that others get great progress with their projects ( Charlie, Tim & Glen ). We just got the order through to US Body and it takes about 12 weeks to get that Altered Wedge up here north. Eight weeks to fabricate it and about four to ship it. So, we have to focus on other things meanwhile Without body, it's hard to tell what fits where and how all the parts should be done. Thank's Moonshadow. We'll give some thoughts to that cover also. Seems to me that we have Christmas here every now and then . (Maybe, because Santa lives so close to us ) Now we got delivery from Chassis Shop and from Mark Williams. Something to build an A-arm front suspension and to get the steering wheel hooked with quick release hub. The upper one is Mark Williams Jig fixture for getting the spindles to correct height and to decent caster and camber angle. Tubes are for building the steering shafts. Unfortunately Strange doesn't sell it's cheap Funny Car steering box anymore, so we had to order one from Chassis Shop. It might be up here in Finland 8th of December. New Christmas is coming again... .

No huge progress so far, but today we got rear tyres for our dragster. Also PG with transbrake is purchased and Wilcap adapter is ordered. Question for Ted: What kind of spindles do you have and which front wheels? Spindle mount or with five lugs? What is your suggestion?

Thank's Ted. I'll check what Strange has and I all ready know what MW has. There might not be big difference in prices, but we'll see...

Powerglide has finally found it's way behind the Y. Wilcap adapter is a high quality piece, but still needed some grinding to be able to work with Mopar mini starter. And some grinding had to be done to Powerglide too .
|
By Hollow Head - 15 Years Ago
|
Ted, things are just the way you thought. Only problem at the moment is that because of that 6mm thick engine rear plate, we have to use either 6mm spacer with that wilcap spacer or we have to make a new one. Here is couple of pictures about what was needed to make that starter work. Wilcap adapter. This is the view through starter hole at the adapter. Huge bump must be removed from Powerglides bellhousing. This is how it looks afterwards. I had to grind over 1 inch deep to make that starter gear clear that housing. But, I think that doesn't make it too weak anyhow. Starter housing interferes with one positioning pin at the adapter, so I had to grind some material off the housing. From there... And now it fits, but we have to lower the engine for couple of millimeters because the starter hits the frame tube. Not a good thing....
|
By Hollow Head - 15 Years Ago
|
Well... yes and no. We don't have a crank in that mock up engine, so we don't know the actual position of the flexplate versus starter gear. And I assume that Wilcap has measured it so that it's ok at the center position. Also, I all ready had to open up the hole for the starter gear to make it spin freely. Upper attchment hole is tight and the lower has some space to move it a little bit sideways, but moving from the lower hole doesn't give us much more clearance. After we have that taller spacer, we can check it out. Lowering the engine is easy, just grinding some material off of the engine plates. We just have to double check the lining with rearend before doing anything stupid .

Pressure sensor reads the manifold vacuum(or pressure) and RPM is taken from coil minus(somewhere else like crank trigger).
Injectors injects two or four time per engine round and 12x12 map tells how long injectors are open (~2-25 milliseconds).
You can also run in closed loop, when lambda (oxygen sensor in exhaust) corrects air/fuel-ratio.
There are manifold and coolant temperature sensors which also corrects ratio.
So MAP(Manifold Air Pressure)/RPM is most used and easiest way to control fuel.
Ford ('89 and up) uses MAF(Manifold Air Flow/RPM to get same results.
Ignition samelike, but easier.
It also reads MAP and RPM and is corrected by (a little) temp sensors. When we use spark throwing lottery machine called Distributor, it needs only RPM (like coil - or crank trigger or four 6mm bolts on damper), control box like Megasquirt, what tells when spark is throwed, ignition module (MSD, Crane HI-6, some Bosch....) to drive coil(Megasquirt II dont need modules) and coils and plugs.
When we don't use Dizzy, we need Crank Trigger to tell us, in what position engine internals are and multiple ignition modules.

Stock Y-Block ignition map with a little high cruising speed advance.
Some Megasquirt wiring diagram, I dont remember what motor that was.
Ignition module modded on MS, Y Crank Trigger, some Renault coils and my mushroom valley.

In that ignition map, 100 kpa is throttle wide open, when manifold got pressure is same as outside.
kpa 5 is very hard engine braking position, when manifold got max vacuum(smileyface).
When we go kpa 100 and above, then speedo needle goes southeast.

Mini laptop would be nice, but I hope MS got tuning software on cell phone in near future. I think Iphone got it already.
There is some SD car datalogger expansions out there and MS3 got it build inside, but maybe we can wait.
Some guys got WLAN and Bluetooth systems already, so there will be time when we can tune Y-Block at other side of planet.
How cool is that...maybe none, but makes things easier.

Hey...I am diggin the digger...I have been wanting to build one for a while...glad to see you are working through it, might be a little easier for me later on!
Are you working from some plans, and existing car or just "going for it!" Either way I am very interested in seeing it all come together.
Couple of questions...whats the transmission plan? We need to get the boost turned up where you can run a direct drive....1/4 mile burn-outs rule!
If you need a little help, I'll just jump on a plane and head on over
Now back to talking about the family tree, some wonder bread spread and somehow hair color! LOL...
Here are some pics I have to keep me "motivated" about building one...

Yeah, I used to get on the HAMB alot...but tooo big for my tastes now.
The chassis is a really neat thing to think about, all the engineering to make it flex in the right spots, yet stay strong enough to do the job. I do not know alot about it all, but wanna learn real bad.
The FED craze is pretty big over here...dad and I went to the NHRA nostalgia drags in Bowling Green KY last year...hope we can make some more visits in the future.
A really big mentor in my life was Mickey Cox, he ran fuel back in the 60's...only got to know him over 3 years or so...but he got the wheels turning in my head. Just need a little time, some more space and of course some cash-o-la!
When you get ready for the turbochargers...keep me in the loop. I lost my "real" job building the high performance boats, now I am out on my own building turbos again and I would love to chat with you on your choice of compressors...you know low 8's is not a big deal

LordMrFord (12/10/2010) Pressure sensor reads the manifold vacuum(or pressure)...It should be noted that the term vacuum is a little misleading, hence pressure in parentheses. A vacuum by definition is a volume of space that is empty, a void. This never happens in an engine. Some people think of it as a negative pressure. This is understandable because many gauges start at zero, which is actually atmospheric pressure, with vacuum on one side of zero and pressure on the other. Logically, if the needle moves in the vacuum direction, it appears to be negative. What we call vacuum is actually a pressure which is less than atmospheric and to my knowledge, our current understanding of physics indicates that a negative pressure is impossible. If a pressure of 12psi is measured in the intake manifold at sea level, we call it a vacuum because it is less than 14.7psi. When it comes to supercharging and turbo charging, either of those devices producing 6psi means that the engine is actually getting 20.7psi. Here again, because of the way the gauges are set up, they will show only 6psi, but it is really 6psi above atmospheric. Throttle position in an aircraft is read off a "Manifold Pressure Gauge" when the throttle is wide open at sea level on a standard day the gauge should read 29 in. hg. Usually reads 28 though.

pegleg (7/5/2009) .....although the name is English, as is Eaton (Ted). Frank. I believe I’m an original hybrid. Mom was blue eyed English and is actually descended from the Sanfords that came over on the Mayflower but Dad was Irish, German, Holland, and maybe English. The ‘maybe English’ part is the Eaton name and I’ve only been able to track that lineage back to the 1790 census beyond which point I only hit dead ends. My German ancestry is through the Glenndinning name which migrated to America from Canada in the 1800's.

Hollow Head (9/23/2009) Question for Ted: What kind of spindles do you have and which front wheels? Spindle mount or with five lugs? What is your suggestion? Both my altered roadster and fiberglass bodied ’57 Ford have Strange spindles. The roadster is spindle mount on the wheels while the ’57 is five lug. I debated on using spindle mount on the ’57 but went with five lug instead simply due to being able to service the wheels and tires without having to contend with the spindle bearings. I'll add that there was also a better variety of wheel choices for the five lug. But on a dragster where the weight is a major consideration, then go with the spindle mount wheels of which there are some much smaller sizes being available versus those for the five lug.
