We had an interesting weekend at El Mirage, I posted some pics on the H.A.M.B. here's the link http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=362683 I'll let Charlie chime in, hopefully with some more pictures and his story on what is in store for this year.

If you didn't see anything with the link I'll just post the pics here.

this guy was pitted next to us, not a Y but a pretty neat car I thought, and a one legged driver too.

As Tim mentioned, things did not go too well at El Mirage this last weekend. We were still using the old engine for some comparison between the straight exhaust and the new "H" pipe. On the chassis dyno we added 13 hp with the connection between the headers. The engine ran very strong and by the tach we were doing about 120 at the 3/4 mark (track is 1.3 miles long) when I found myself going sideways and simultaneously traveling 80 feet from the right side of the track to the extreme left side. I kept my foot in it to keep from spinning, but as soon as it straightened out I lifted and coasted through the lights at 83+ mph. Disappointing? Yeah. Scary? Yeah. I saw where Tim quoted me on the HAMB saying "you couldn't pound a tack up my a-- with a 10 lb. sledge." We had film of the start and a possibility of some film of the slide from another crew member down track. We are trying to get that downloaded and if we caught it, we'll post it. The track was the worst we had seen in the two years running there. Other drivers said it was like driving on soap suds. Very few records were set and the top times were up to 50 mph slower. We could have made another run, but I was done for the day. We packed up and headed home with plans to beef up the front end and steering for straighter tracking and install the new engine. Davis, I see where you asked about a picture......
We do not use the velocity stack. There is a large chunk of foam rubber with a 6" hole that is compressed between the carb and the hood scoop. We get the coolest and cleanest air stream that the class will allow. There probably isn't much ram air, but the old blower scoop looks good!

Glad you're alright. Too bad you didn't have the camera in the cab. That would make for an exciting video.

Thanks, Charlie. I almost put the camera in the cab before the run and now I'm glad I didn't. I don't think I would like to relive that again.

Tim. Thanks for the pics. Like Dennis, I couldn’t view them at the HAMB site either. Great pics as always. Charley. Glad you were able to keep your truck on all fours and to a safe slowdown. Not pushing your luck in making another run just shows how maturity and good old common sense ends up reigning supreme. The Fun aspect is just being saved for another day.

Ted, Thanks for the comments. You always find a silver lining for me after an unsuccessful day.

I went past Wendover in Early April, the weather was just Friggin awful. Wind was blowing about 60 mph and the rain was going straight south across I-80. I bet you guys had rippled sand 6" high.

Frank, Yes, Bonneville is usually under water until July each year. This year SpeedWeek is Aug 8-14. It was moved up a week due to Windover casinos promotion conflict. I hope the water goes away in time. El Mirage doesn't have a problem with a buildup of sand. The soft track was just a problem of the crust being so shallow that once it was ran over, it was like mush underneath. Although the track was soft, the weather held pretty good until just after my run. The YouTube video link attached shows how bad it got a little later in the afternoon. I don't know these guys, but I sure am glad the race truck was loaded by that time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWjAsAOadtk (run time 1 min 45 sec) I'm in the middle of dismantling the truck for new steering, new engine, new gears and new tires. It will be tough to make the next El Mirage on June 14th. July 12th will be the last opportunity before Bonneville.
