I've noticed a lot of you Y-Block guys have stated you're in like you're 60's... I'm thinkin' I may just be the youngest one here. I've always been one of the youngest when I was part of m rumble bee sites, mustang sites, chargers sites etc... Than again, that was back when I was in my mid teens. I'm now 21....
How old are ya'll?

Almost twice that old... Turning 40 soon . Really, Apache, you can go and peek each others profiles and some of us have provided that info there. But... there seems to be lot's of sexy senior citizens over there . No dirty old mens...
The first time I got in touch with Y-blocks was when I met with yfreak57 or teros292 somewhere during the year of 1997 or 1998. So, you must consider me as a newcomer or newbie or something like that. The first Y-block overhaul I did just couple of years ago in 2007... So, I'm learning all the time...

Well let me put it this way, I bought a new 1967 Ford LTD 2dr ht when I was 20 yrs old so you figure it out, I can't count that high. By the way that was the best car that I've ever owned. I put 221,000 miles on it before I sold it in 1985, burnt a valve at about 90,000, had to replace one muffler and tailpipe, the other side was still orginal equipment. That 390 four barrel was pretty stout too.

So far I'm the youngest I'm 20 will be 21 in November. I bought my 57 Fairlane when I was 17 for only $5,000 towed it home rebuilt the carb that afternoon adjusted the brakes and drove it on the weekends. Now I've taken it apart and rebuilding it the right way. I may be young, but I’ve worked in a couple prestigious Hot Rod shops long enough to realize I’m not going to do it for a career lol

I'm 26... Got my 57 ford about 4 years ago. My grandpa paid me $300 (+ gas money) to haul it out of their garage, or it was going to the scrap yard. To my knowledge the car has been in the family since new. New battery, coil, plugs, and wires and it ran (not well, but I drove it all over anyway). Still a work in progress, but runs great and I love it. I've never been to a drag race, but have wanted to go to columbus since I found this site. I'm hoping to get some track time at Union Grove in WI this summer as an ice breaker / motivation to get to the shootout this year! I owe all my technical knowledge about my car to this site. Thanks! - John

Okay I'll spill the beans, 46 and counting. First Y that I owned was in a 56 F600 car hauler/implement truck with a very very tired 272 that after a major tune up ran pretty good for me for about 3 years and was replaced by a free ( guy owed me some money) Ford rebuilt 390 longblock. Then I bought a 57 F500 that was an ex-fire truck that was in a lot better shape but never got the hauler part of it completed before selling it. I didn't have anything for several years till I bought my first Unibody pickup in 2001 and been a Yblock owner ever since. Michael

I've been driving em' since 1955, but I bought my first Y-Block 57 Ford pickup in 1961, haven't been without one since. Racing rookie at 64. Have a 10 year plan for a red hat. I was born April '64, learned to drive a manual trans. in a '64 F-100 with a 292 four speed "granny" when I was 12, bought "my" first F-100 (1960 223 with three on the tree, it was only 20 years old for $500) on my sixteenth birthday on my way home from the DMV with my new ticket in hand. If you found gas for $.99 a gallon you were lucky and I made $5 an hour working on my Uncles ranch (minimum was $3.10) I saw Shirley Muldowney race Don Garlits in a grudge match at Famoso in '83 and remember everyone Booooo-ing her. Fastest times then were around 250mph @ 5sec.

My birthday was Feb 1956 and for my 50th birthday I bought myself-you guessed it a 1956 Ford Fairlane. The car is still older than me being built in Nov.55.Thats OK though because I have always had a "thing" for older good looking ladies. The last old Ford I had was a 53 Meteor that I bought on April fools day 1975.Sold it in 87 and just got back into this when I got the 56.I spent 10 years on the Ford parts counter when I was younger and never once heard of a Y-block-of course that was a good 15 years after they were last used.Thats my story and I'm stickin' to it.By the way this site is terrific and its the people that make it that way!

I was born in 1943. My first vehicle was a 50 GMC pickup. My second vehicle was a 56 Ford Customline. I used the same title for over 20 years, but what I drove was always the product of salvage vehicles, different Y block engines, but always an overdrive. I commuted to college daily for 5 semesters 90 miles one way, dated my wife who lived 85 miles away and took her from there to San Antonio which was another 40 miles because that is where the action was for 3 years. Used the 56 for a family car the first 10 years of our married life. Finally sold the car and all the related junk because the Hurst mystery shifter got so bad my wife had to crawl under the car to get it out of low gear. In February 1999 my wife and I flew to New York on our wedding anniversary and picked up a 56 Ford Customline I had bought through Hemmings. We drove it to Texas with very little trouble and I was equipped for the trouble we had. I now have 3 1956 Fords and all the parts to build a 4th. I had some pretty quick ones. I still have a ticket I got the first night Fredericksburg used their new radar gun. 120 on Main St. and a whopping $10 fine.

Hey fellow Y's guys I graduated from high school in '65 and that summer pumped diesel and gas at The Rebel Truck Stop, Wentzville, Mo. During that time there was "gas war" (bet the youngsters won't know what that is) and gas got down to 18.9 cents per gallon, diesel was even cheaper and if a trucker paid cash he got a discount/rebate of 2 or 3 cents per gallon. Learned to drive on the family '55 4dr Customline 272 stick with glasspacks on it. It was a surprising runner and sounded good too. At a little over 100,000 miles it started smoking and developed some engine noises. I still remember what my dad told me, "This old car is like an old horse, if you take it easy and don't run it hard it will last a good while yet". I blew it up in less then a week. Then my dad bought a very clean used '61 Ford 2 dr sedan 292 stick with a 4 bbl carb. I thought I was styling then. Now at 61 years I have a '55 Customline identical to Ted's that's been in the family since '56 with 30,000 on the 272, a nice '37 Ford Cabriolet, and more Ford trucks (1955 to 1976) then I have fingers including a couple of bbw from the '50s and a 4 door 1960 Ford pickup, yes I said 4 door, that was built by Orrville Metal Specialties, Orrville Ohio. About half of them are finished runners. Life is just pretty doggone good and I'm looking forward to getting out and meeting some of you fellow Y blockers. And John F. I will be trying to call you again. Missouri Mike

Just turned 66 last week. 1st Y was while in engineering school in 1961. It was a 56 2 door Fairlane Town Sedan. 3 speed.; Loved the car but eventually sold it when I bought a 2 pump gas station. Thought wrenching was much more enjoyable than "theory engineering". That all changed when the future wife came along and stated I had better use my education if we were to marry. Kids and career took priority over "hot rods" but I stayed with Fords. Then after 20- yeas, I started dabbling again with wrenches as a hobby this time. Somehow, we ended up with 2 C**vettes (60 &77) but also have a 56 sedan full custom with 312, 3x2, 3 w/OD; 64 F100 SWB, 292, 3 speed and a 08 Grand Marquis. Retired from WORK, have a 1800 sq ft shop and can "putter" all day long. BTW, she is still with me and encourages me with my "hobby". The 77 vette is hers as is the 08 GM. Life is great!! POP

49, here- First Y-block was in a '63 F-100 I drove in H.S. I never had to do much more than a tune up on that, and I owned it 5-6 years. It was dependable, indestructible and ran like a watch. It took me 25 years to finally start messing around with another one. My current Y project is my late parents '57 T-bird. According to my mother, I was conceived in that car I guess it could be said that it's been a part of my life since before I was born.... /Duck

Just turned 54. My '55 bird is three years older than I am, but I remember riding in it with Grandma when I was 4. I bought the car when I was 14, and took it apart in auto shop. I sold it in pieces when I was 19, but bought it again (still in pieces) last year.
The motor is freshly rebuilt and running, but not in the car. It may be drivable again by June, if I'm lucky. Dad's paying for the body and paint work, but he has cancer. I'm hoping to take him for a ride before he leaves the planet.

I'm 49 and got my first Y a couple of months back. I've put over 4,000 miles on it so far. A lot of fun! I really want to do my first-ever engine tear-down and rebuild on a Y-block; I'm still figuring out how to get a good engine to work with, and how to fit this project in the garage. My first car was a 74 Mercury Bobcat. Still in high school, I got a 70 Torino Cobra with 429 SCJ, 4 speed toploader and 4.30 gears. That car was wicked fast. It sat in my parents' garage for nearly 30 years, and recently went to my cousin. Lots of cars later, I now have 57 Country Sedan, 70 Bronco, 74 MGB and 05 JCW Mini.

My birthday is August 1949, my first experience with a Y-block was my Dad’s Late model stock racecar, in 1957.(him on far right) It was a 55 Ford sponsored by a local Ford dealer. In 1960 I got my first ride in a 1955 thunderbird my Dad back together that had been stolen and striped of the engine and trans. My first car was a 1957 ford F-100, but we pulled the 6 cylinder in favor of a 389 Pontiac with tri-power. In 1969 I bought my first Y-block, the 57 bird I still own today. Needed body work so I sold it many years later. When I retired I got annother Bird and here I am. 56 Fords are a favorite of mine, very good cars.

John, Everytime I think we're getting old I think of Harbit. If he can do it, so can we. Doug, You got me by 16 days, wow are you old! John made me buy my first Y in 2000 or 2001. I'm a "Johnny come lately" Only experience I've had previously was dating a girl in high School who had a '55 Crown Vic with the Fordo automatc, a continental kit, skirts and Smithies. Didn't blow me away with the acceleration, but sounded great. I raced before, but only with FE's or my Windsor/Ranger, or a few Pontiacs, back in the day.

The transmission problems were a youth problem, a lot of street racing and no fear. I remember being able to change the transmission from start to finish in 20 minutes flat once I got rid of the transmission cross member. I could buy them for $20.00 back then. As for the red bird I am in the process of replacing the mechanical Enderly fuel injection with a MR Bigstuff3 electronic fuel injection. This should give it better manners. Now I need someone to prime it for me to start it. I am keeping the hat on top of it for the looks it has now so it gets a little more complicated. The fastest I have been so far is 9.5 at 136. I have not got myself up to speed with the car yet. I need to figure out how to launch it. I had a 1.015, 60 foot once but been spinning tires ever since. I had been spending a lot of time changing jet sizes to richen it up but I think I found the source of the problem. The intake runners on the heads had 2-.125 diameter holes drilled in them and epoxied shut. The epoxy started to fail sucking more air from the sump changing to fuel ratio. Finally enough holes were open so that at the end of the strip as I slowed down she started smoking pretty good. All I thought of was if it blows, out with the Cleveland and in with a Y-block. Well that Cleveland has way more HP then a Y-block so I have decided to stay with it. One Cleveland intake port is the size of two in the Y-block.

I'll be 58 years young on Feb 20th. 1st Y-Block I owned was a 1956 Monarch (Merc) 312 3 speed standard. I grew up in a Ford family. Those were the days!

Just turned 63 in January so I guess that make’s me an old timer, but not an old timer around y-blocks. I picked up a 55 Bird a little over a year ago and had planned to stuff a 302 into it. Fortunately I stumbled onto this forum. Anyone that spends time in this very knowledge rich forum can’t help themselves from acquiring a love and passion for the Y block. Larry

I'll be 52 in March. My older brother gave me his 55 crown vick when I turned 16. Had a 272, automatic and duals with Hollywood mufflers, it wasn't too fast but it sounded good. I've owned a 66 pickup, 68 torino, 69 fairlane, and I'm on my second 56 victoria.

Might as well keep this thing going! I was 10 when my 57 Bird was built in January. My first car was a 57 Fairlane 500 312 automatic and a little later had a 55 Crown Vic for several years before getting stupid and selling it but I have hung onto the Bird that I got in 1971. I've never been without a Y-Block in something since I was 15.
