Can a 272 block be safely bored to a 292? What else would have to be upgraded?

howdy,

Generally yes.

From John Mummerts site,

Blocks: Almost any 272, 292, or 312 block can be used for performance use. 272 blocks can be bored to standard 292 and since all other internal components are the same this gives you a 292. 292 pistons are easier to find, cheaper and have a better ring selection.

Yes, it can be bored to 3.75". Besides pistons and rings, no other parts are needed.

Not all 272’s will take kindly to boring out to a 3.750” standard 292 bore size. You’re talking about a 0.125” overbore in this instance. Sonic testing beforehand can potentially save you some grief while at the same time save a block that will be suitable for a lesser bore size. Here are a couple of links giving some more detail on boring out these engines.
