Getting ready to install Oil Pump and Pan Gasket. Is this the correct way for Gasket.? Y-Block Book suggests NOT using any Gasket sealer or other RTV on Oil Pump installation. Opinions ? Thanks!

Im a fan of overkill and with extensive experience with the power of grey rtv will always lean on it when im considering any sort of leak as a possibility i don't want to deal with. ive sealed a cracked engine cover below the oil level with it having decent results for it. ive also fought off bedplates sealed with it enough to trust it to hold a cylinder head in place over my pinky toe. rub if you're going that way get a piece of glass and rub black or gray on the outer 3/4 edge of the gasket. rub it on thin, flip the gasket over and repeat. sometime for certainty ill flip it twice on the glass to ensure even coating on both side and that it wont gush around when clamped in place. if you do this within 5-10 minutes it will stay tacky, bolt oil pump on and it will not leak. from that area. i do get a little on the bolts as well to ensure no weeping.

The gasket looks correct. I do not use any sealer on the oil pump gaskets and simply install them dry. Zero leakage issues doing it this way. If there was any sealer I would consider at that point it would be either lithium grease or a liquid copper based gasket sealer. I am very cautious in using RTV on engine gaskets where any excess can break off and eventually plug up an oil passage. There are specific sealers for specific purposes.

Thanks Ted. The Ford Y-Block book says same thing. Do NOT use sealant or RTV.
