I have a vintage Mallory coil that says for transistor ignition.   What could be the difference. Can I use it on a points distributor with or without a ballistic resister.

If using that coil with points you will need a ballast resistor otherwise the current will be too high for the breaker points. First measure the coil primary and see what it is. I'm guessing that being for a transistor box the coil primary resistance is probably lower than that of a standard coil which in that case would produce even higher current. Very generally, in a 12 volt point system, the coil would be about 1.5 ohms, another 1.5 ohms for the ballast and that's what the points can live with.  Hope this helps....

Thanks, sounds like a plan
