'64 292 Generator to Alternator

Good morning, friends!

I'm piecing my 292 back together and she came with a generator that may or may not have worked.   I have an alternator that came with the truck (originally had the 223/6 in it) and I'd like to fit that up to the y-block.  Doesn't look to be a direct fit, but I know it can be done.  Is it a simple bracket swap or is there something else that I'm missing?  Any guidance will be greatly appreciated!

If the 292 has the original generator bracket it’s pretty easy with aluminum spacers from ACE Hardware. The first one I did I hung the alternator from a piece of all tread, set the belt on, and measured what the gap were for the spacers. I was using a single wire Power Master 100 amp that could still use the idiot light and followed their instructions using the old regulator as a junction point but you should not need that if the alternator was already on the vehicle.

Just a couple things to double check. The pulley on the alternator should match the existing belt for width. There’s probably some leeway there if you’re not running high rpm’s or big loads (like a 90 amp alternator). The second is the wiring if you don’t have an existing harness that works right. That’s what DLR is referring to. I’m assuming that if you don’t have the bracket, it may never have been connected.

John Mummert Y-Block is one of those companies that offers an alternator bracket for the Ford. Here’s the link.    www.ford-y-block.com/alternatorbrkt.htm  .  Perhaps someone can chime in and mention some of the other suppliers.

Speedway and CASCO offer the alternator bracket.  Mine cost ~$156.00 plus shipping.  Joe-JDC

Thanks everyone for the advice and updates!

The truck came with the alternator wired already, so the harness is set up for it.   The bracket on the engine is for the old generator, and the pully on the alternator is the same as what's on the waterpump/main pully now so it looks like the belt will be just fine.   I did find a nice bracket/hardware set up on Vintage Auto Garage for around $150, so I went ahead and ordered that.   Once I've got the motor back in the truck, we'll see how all the wiring works out, since this part is on the opposite side of the engine bay than the previous engine.  I'll keep you posted and Thanks again!

These alternator brackets were used on the late 1964 trucks with 292's
