I'm trying to check the starter that came off my Lincoln 317. I cleaned it up and it turns. I tried to check it using a 12 volt atv battery but it just sparked when I touched the neg to the body of the starter. I hooked the POS to the terminal and touched the neg to the body. It didn't turn. Wondering if the battery just wasn't powerful enough or if I had it reversed since it's positive ground. Any ideas?

Negative to negative and positive to positive, whether 6v or 12v. In other words, the positive cable from the 12v battery goes to the positive post on your starter to which the 6v positive-ground cable had been attached. When installed, you will need to replace 6v solenoid with a 12v solenoid, if you are converting to 12v.

You do not mention if this starter has worked since you have had the car.  If not, it likely needs to be disassembled and rebuilt accordingly.  It may be a case where the starter has simply sat too long without being used.  Brushes and bushings being replaced was the norm back in the day for those starters.

The car sat for 57 years. there are a lot of parts I took off it that I have no idea if they work or not. Like fuel pump, oil pump, p steering etc. I'm cleaning the gunk off the outside but really don't know how to test them. I could just rebuild them all but if they do work it'll save me money and time. Plus I don't want to screw something up if I don't have to.
Plus it has power seats and windows that I'm going to have to test at some point. Some of the window motors are sitting in the bottom of the doors for some reason. But that's for another day.

Amazing somebody let a car sit for 57 years (unless it's in a museum). You would think that the owner(s) would have realized long ago that they would never do anything with it and let it go. I guess there's no shortage of hoarders.

Luckily it was in a hay barn most of the time. No rot and very little surface rust. A few spots on the top rear fenders and where the drivers feet go. Nothing invasive at all. Rockers and frame perfect. All chrome and stainless are there and in very good condition. Needs a few things like the colored lincoln emblems for trunk and hood, radio. I've taken quite a few things off it and apart and just the distributor gave me problems. Everything else came apart using just blaster. Hope that trend continues. I appreciate all the advice I've been getting on here. Will be looking for help for years to come
