Is there some trick to replacing a pinion seal in a stock '54 rear end using ordinary tools? The shop manual shows that several special Ford tools are needed to remove the old seal and insert the new one. Thanks, Alan

I did it on my '52 Merc, no special tools, no problem. You have to be careful not to change the pinion bearings pre-load by much.

You will need a puller to remove the pinion. But most steering wheel pullers should work if you use bolts through the flange and some large washers. It really is not that difficult to do. Certainly worked well for me... https://www.hotrodreverend.com/post/2017/10/02/55-ford-fairlane-restoration-blog-part-23

I followed directions from the shop manual and used a center punch to leave a mark on the the flange nut and pinion shaft for a guide for allignment. When I removed the flange nut the a steering wheel puller would have worked but mine actually slid off by hand. I have a tool for pounding on seals but probably could have gotten by with a hammer and block of wood. When I installed the flange nut It quickly became very snug when the punch marks were nearly alligned and with a socket and breaker bar and a little grunt I tightened the nut just a little more and the punch marks alligned. It would taken a lot more torque to go beyond . Pretty obvious when you have it on right. Don't let the word preload scare you. Good luck.

I have changed many pinion seals and learned from my dad and other mechanics. Each one said the same thing, “before your start”rattle the pinion against the ring gear and remember the feel”. We always made a mark on the nut too. If it rattled too much I learned to ease into it wanting that same feel. When done my dad always cleaned the threads and nut face and put som paint on the threads that were showing and the nut.
