Hi all. I am hoping someone can give me some good advice about new rocker arms to suit 272-292 y block. I have replaced complete valve train during the engine rebuild and now have a problem. The ball on the end of the rocker arm adjusting screw has worn away to about half its size and I am very suspect about the rest as a couple look like they are going down the same path. All American made (suppossedly). The new rocker arms, shafts. etc have done about 4-5 hours, if that in the shed. I need advice as to what brand or type to buy this time. (no chinesium) This is not a good start for a new engine so i am suitably pissed off. Thank you in advance. Waiting patiently. The pushrods came from FA products and are okay unless you know different the rockers came from another supplier.

ted or someone might know better but i would think these screws are a cheap knockoff.the factory one dont even wear when the rockers arent getting oil.i tried to get a set of the self locking ones for a friend a couple years ago and couldnt get a set anywhere.

Is the wear on both cylinder banks or only one side? Is this possibly the oiling issue y-blocks are notorious for? You obviously need new adjusting screws, but I think I'd confirm proper oiling by spinning the oil pump while watching for oil at the rocker arms. If you get little or no oil at the rockers remove both shaft and rocker assemblies and spin the pump again to see if oil comes out of the oil passages in the heads that lead up to the rockers.

Do they all look the same? Are the rocker arm shifts assembled correctly? Did the rebuild include the revision to the center cam bearing in the block? These are questions we all ask today.

I've read good things about Crane's adjusters. It looks like Summit has them.

Don't run them, find old used Ford parts, the rockers are good, the balls and most push rods are no good.

Maybe pricey but contact Manton Pushrods in Lake Elsinore California. They make pushrods and adjusting screws and list the material. under adjusting screws they show diameter of the ball and threads on their website…. A few years ago I was advised to get the socket style adjuster and push rods without the cup style for my racing GMC 6 custom roller rockers but didn’t.

hi darrel ,,, yes i agree but i want something to be a good fit on the new shafts and used ones will be sloppy.i have tried macs and they make new arms with adjusters but of course there are none on the shelf and do not know when new stock will be made.i have toyed with the idea of using old arms and machine out the bore a few thou and inserting bronze sleeves,,but this is still in the thinking stage..thanks form your input..(yes that oil will be changed!)

I used these guys when I rebuilt the top end on my '55 Merc engine. Great work and and quick turn around.

wouldnt the old screw with lock nut work on your rockers.without changing them.im talking about the early ford rockers

Those rockers will work, get 1956 or older adjusters (lock nut type), use factory Ford push rods, do not buy aftermarket rocker parts there all made in the same place, you may want to use Ford Fe or inline six adjusters (non lock nut) yes they will work.
PS Do not use blue head gaskets (water leaks down the sides of the block)

Best I remember, in Australia the Ford Falcon 144, 170, and 200 (early) all used the same push rods and rocker adjusters that a Y Block Ford used, use the tubular push rods not solid, you can use the adjuster screws from a 223/215 Ford 6 also.

i cliff,,, yes i am using tubular pushrods not the old solid but i do notice the cup shape at the rocker end seems to be slightly different to the original idea and hope this did not add to the problem.what is your opinion on that particular type rod i have used?? any thoughts or experience? we are checking out the falcon adjusters.

Hi, it looks like all the aftermarket (china) push rods have a cup that is a little under size, if you can compare what you have to a Ford part you maybe good, the aftermarket adjusters have a out of spec heat treatment, they fail quickly and throw metal all through the engine.

Speaking of adjusters, why are the self-locking ones hollow and thus very weak structurally? I was chasing/cleaning the threads on some I have and one of them just easily broke in half. I quit on them at that. I didn't want to lose any more of them. Are there any of them available that are solid and thus much stronger? If so, where can I get some of them? Thanks for any replies.

They are strong enough, do not run a die or thread chaser, those are plated after threading to cause a interference fit (about .003). factory adjusters are hard and brittle but never break.

yes i compared the pushrods and they look the same in the cup area,,as for those piece of shit adjusters they have been replaced with good original ones. what could possibly go wrong?? have a good christmas cheers
