Oil pump cover O ring

Is it easy enough to replace the O ring on a flat cover oil pump without removing the whole pump? I was curious about parts falling out when pulling cover and will pump pull oil up without being primed

I’ve done it. O-ring was flat and leaked. Even if the gears fall out you can put them back in with a little grease to hold them.

Great…. I take it the gears didn’t fall out. 
After 3 months of no leaks I’m chasing one now around the oil pump. I’ve traced it to either the oil pump to block gasket or the large flat o-ring. I’ve got the pump off and it could be either. I’m picking up the feed tube o-ring and gasket the morning and found some black “stuff” where it surfaces in the pump body. Tough to clean out but got it with brake clean and a cloth material. I think I’ll permatex #2 the gasket this time.This is the one time I wish I didn’t have power steering. Working around the control valve and hoses are a pain.

Yeah they fell out but like you said a little grease and no sweat,  and power steering would be nice in this old thing but if I don't feel like really driving I'll just drive something else

Just a note re the Oil Pump seal; It was reported here (I think ?) that a seal that's too thick may cause a noticeable drop in oil psi...

While the gasket thickness on the spur gear oil pumps is critical, the O ring thickness for the gerotor oil pumps is not an issue as those O rings are designed to crush to the point that the cover is metal to metal contact with the oil pump housing.  Only when using an O ring not designed for the gerotor oil pump will there be an issue and that would be in the case where the O ring is much thicker than the original thus preventing the cover to fully tighten flat to the housing.

I have the Gerotor style and the gasket to the engine block matches the figure and part number for it from Best for that application. My last 1/2" wide o-ring for the tube had the metal ends but appeared to have some flaking. The one I bought today does not but has a different feel to the material. I am going to lube it with grease especially on the adjust nut side. 
As a note I tested the by-pass plunger with a small screw driver and it moves without sticking but the spring takes quite a bit of pushing with a small screw driver to move. Ted have you ever tested the spring/plunger to see when it first starts moving? I realize their is typically a lot of oil bypassed in both the pump and the filter because the pumps can really put of a lot if the by-pass stays closed for any reason; even blowing off a filter. It was great to have very minor leaks for the last 3 months and i'm hoping that will return.
