There has been a multitude of valve covers available for the Ford Y over the years. This thread is devoted to just that so let’s see what you have in the way of valve covers on your Ford Y. Limiting the picture size to ‘500’ wide will make picture posting easier. I’ll start this off with the recently released aluminum finned valve covers by Blue Thunder. These are roughly one inch taller than the run of the mill valve cover for the Ford Y.

And here they are appropriately engraved to reflect the current state of affairs. I’ll include another picture of these later once they are on the car they will be installed on.

I picked these up off EBay . Chrome plated instead of polished. I’m hoping the plating holds up and eliminates the oxidation. I like the new Blue Thunder covers with the breather option but not the price .

KULTULZ (6/14/2021) Why COVID? Because it’s more politically correct than saying “China Flu Special”? Actually the engine was being machined and assembled during the pandemic and the parts supply was and still is an issue. As such, just getting the engine together with the shortage of what use to be normally available parts was a daunting process in itself. There were also issues with replacement parts and tooling for the machine shop equipment of which some may not come back for the older machines. Hence the valve covers being labeled ‘Covid-19 Special’.

A couple pictures of the 56 Merc block engine in the roadster. The odd “bird covers came from either AU or NZ and were cast in the 60’s. (The guys initials are on it, I think it was BG). The “Mercury” set is from Ace, also NZ.

How about a LYB? I cleaned them up, based the gold, clear coated, scuffed, hand lettered the lettering, and re-cleared. Looks better than decals. And yes green block with gold trim is correct for 57.

These valve covers are original to my 55. I polished them when I replaced the gaskets last year, no small effort but came out pretty good.

How about these valve covers?
This is from Tom Maruska's website where he is posting about his restoration of the 1956 Mercury XM Turnpike Cruiser concept car. Here is the site - Chapter 5 is where he summarizes his restoration progress. Someone apparently stole the "one off" dual quad intake and carb set up, so he is installing a single 4 barrel carb for the time being. http://www.tommaruskacars.us/

I think these are Blue thunder from about 20 years ago. Very similar styling to the new ones. Mummert sold them.
Neither came with breather provisions.

Interesting engine. You must be using a pulse ring on the damper as a ignition trigger? If you don't mind, a brief tour of your setup would be appreciated even if that means making a new thread. Thanks.......................

..just my opinion, but I wouldn't want Edelbrock covers on my Y-Block engine, because instantly most observers will associate it as being an S.B.C.

I know where you're coming from, especially with the Y distributor at the back of the engine. But, I don't really care about the people who don't know enough to know the the difference. If they say something it gives me a chance to educate. I searched long and hard for those vintage covers and like the look. Screw the people who don't know any better. Thanks for your opinion.

What about the air cleaner, is that vintage Edelbrock too? Looking for something cool for the y-block going in to my hot rod. MIKE

I believe the air cleaner is vintage Cal Custom from the 60's. I've only seen a couple of others. Mine came with a reusable K&N style filter element.

Anyone looking at your engine with Edelbrock covers and thinking its a scrub is someone in need of education. It's an oppourtunity to help them evolve a bit. Or they are just stupid and you can't help stupid!

I had someone look at mine one time, when I had original F O R D valve covers on it. They asked if it was a ch evy because the distributor was in back. I had a "Ford guy" chastise me once at a car show for swapping a che vy into the truck again, because he had seen the distributor in back.

Seeing the thread is still alive, here's the "factory" color covers for our '54 F-100 with a 60's 292 in it. I just repainted them for the build. This is post clear coat. Don't recall how dry they were when I took the shot.

I was pretty happy with the fit and finish I got out of these original Thunderbird aluminum valve covers after restoring them. The link for a post I made on my blog (also includes quite a few pictures of the process, the Testors brand paint I used, etc). The clearcoat I used is the same clear I used on the car's sheet metal - looks to be holding up well during extreme temperatures and all.

It’s been years, but shipping wasn’t that bad. Price are $NZ, works in our favor. Might be worth asking.

Considering the currency exchange rate, you'll still be money ahead. Allow up to 21 days for shipping, but my Ace valley cover arrived in 2 weeks (June, 2020). Based on the value, there should be no Customs fees, and no sales tax.

Since we’re on the subject, here’s the other set I’ve got. They came out of AU IIRC. Cast in the late 50’s or early 60’s by someone with the initials BG. The seller was a Ford parts supplier, mainly AU early parts, and had ended up with them. They were selling them on eBay in 2002 or 2003. Supposedly I got the 3rd set in the US and first on the west coast. No big deal to me, but I’ve not seen another set. Same F code clone the Mercury covers are on now.

martyk98 (11/29/2022) Too bad more custom covers weren't made for the 368 Kultulz posted on the 2nd page of this thread pictures of both the Lincoln and Mercury aluminum valve covers for the 368 engines. Here’s the direct link to view those covers. Custom valve covers for those engines are definitely in short supply. http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/FindPost157226.aspx Just a reminder, LYB and MEL valve covers are also welcome on this thread. LYB engines would include 302, 317, 341, 332, & 368. M-E-L engines would include 383, 410, 430, & 462. If you have some of those valve covers, let’s see pictures of those. Here are the valve covers from a Mercury 383 M-E-L engine with some added breathers.

Buzz, I had trouble also. Click on insert, you will then see a row options to the right. Click on the on the one symbol for pictures, it’s to the left the video. That will give you a window to choose your photos. Click on the photo, it will show you how many pixels, click on that and choose a reduced size, and use. That should do it.

- 1958 MERCURY SUPER MARAUDER 3X2 400HP -
These rocker covers were an option in addition to the carb setup.
LINC offered a intake/carb kit in 1958 with a different ACL style.
The LINC (and 59/60 J-BIRD) rocker covers were plain stamped metal resembling the early FE baldies. Chromed was available.
MERC had the M stamped in the sheet metal cover. EDSEL had the E-475 raised letters.
Here is (was?) a source for repro (LINC - MERC (M) - PLAIN) CAST AUM -
